Are you looking to go further in your current field? Or maybe you’re looking for a complete change of career. Hard work and tenacity will often pay its dividends, but simply getting your talents noticed can be a job in itself. Fortunately, some pro-active thinking and outside-the-box thinking can put you in good stead moving forward.
Develop a Timeline of Your Career Goals
It’s almost a certainty that any career progression will take time, but accounting for that time means that there will be less procrastination and more pro-active thinking. That doesn’t mean things can’t change, as they often will, but having a clear timeline that dictates your future goals will give you more incentive to work towards them, as well as putting in safeguards against any potential obstacles that may arise.
Identify Your Skill Requirements
Now this isn’t to say that you lack a certain set of skills, as many have managed to carve a career simply by learning on the job. However, considering what skills you may need to further your career in advance puts you in a much bolder position moving forward. Not only will having the right skill set allows you to instil confidence for whoever hires you, but you can hit the ground running and show just what you’re capable off within the role.
Make Your Voice Heard
Some of us may be quiet by nature, and that’s no reason as to why you shouldn’t reap the same rewards as everyone else, but it is important to make yourself heard. Whether you’re speaking with your boss, or you’re in London networking, it’s important that you promote the skills you have, as well as asking about any arising roles that could benefit from your skills.
Meet People in London
Of course you will be doing most of this via your networking efforts, but it can pay to be prepared when you meet people in London, as you never know who you may end up conversing with. You don’t have to do anything excessive, but having some business cards to hand can help spread your marketing reach that little bit further, and even gains you some worthwhile contacts in the process.
Try Not to Settle Too Much
While there’s nothing wrong with your enjoying your role and becoming friends with your peers, you need to ensure that you don’t set your fate too soon. Becoming settled within a particular company or department can sometimes mean that our goals fade into the distance. This doesn’t mean we’re any less successful, but does mean that series of opportunities come and go without us ever noticing. Enjoy your role, but ensure you still look for those opportunities that could help develop and build your career even more.
Overall
The road to success can be one that consists of many factors, but finding the right balance means you can enjoy your current role while preparing for any future opportunities that may arise. Not only does this allow you to be more pro-active, but it can also offer you some opportunities that you may not have considered in the past.
