Jane Fonda loved her steamy onscreen moments with her late Barefoot in the Park costar, Robert Redford.

Fonda, 87, said that she “lived for” sex scenes with the Oscar-winning actor and director in a clip from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival that resurfaced via X after Redford’s death on Tuesday, September 16. However, Fonda also admitted that Redford, who sat beside her with a sheepish grin on his face at the time, “hated” them.

News broke on Tuesday that Redford died at his home in Utah. His publicist Cindi Berger confirmed via a statement to The New York Times that The Way We Were star died in his sleep. He was 89. A cause of death has not been made public.

Fonda reacted to Redford’s death via a statement to Us Weekly.

“It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying,” she said. “He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”

Fonda and Redford worked together on several films, including 1960’s Tall Story, 1966’s The Chase, 1967’s Barefoot in the Park, 1979’s The Electric Horseman and 2017’s Our Souls at Night. In addition to being frequent costars, they maintained a close friendship through the years.

In 2015, Fonda admitted to The Guardian that she was “always in love” with Redford.

“I made three films with him and nothing happened because I was married and he was married,” she said at the time. Redford later told The Telegraph, “I didn’t know she was in love with me!”

However, in 2017, he gushed about how “easy” it was to work with Fonda.

“We’ve done many films over the years so it just worked out that way, that there was not a lot of discussion, we didn’t have to talk about a lot,” he said during an appearance on Today. “Things just kind of fell into place between us, and there wasn’t much more to think about.”

Meanwhile, he called Fonda a “force” on NBC’s now-defunct show, Megyn Kelly Today.

“One of the things I really like about Jane that’s manifested in this film is that she really is a force,” Redford shared in 2017. “As long as I’ve known Jane she’s always moving forward, and doesn’t look back. And whatever pain, whatever problems she’s had in the past, remains in the past and she keeps moving forward. It’s an admirable quality and very few people have it like Jane does.”

Redford was married to Lola Van Wagenen from 1958 to 1985. The pair shared daughters Shauna, 64, and Amy, 58, son James, who died from cancer in October 2020 at age 58, and son Scott, who died of SIDS in 1959 when he was 2 months old. Redford later tied the knot with Sibylle Szaggars in 2009.

Meanwhile, Fonda was married to Roger Vadim, with whom she shares daughter Vanessa, 56, from 1965 to 1973. She was later married to Tom Hayden from 1973 to 1990. The pair share son Troy, 52. Fonda tied the knot with Ted Turner in 1991, and the former couple split in 2001.
