Trying to decide on the best sand substrate for your aquarium? There are many aquarium sands out there and picking one mainly depends on your aesthetic but can also incorporate your aquarium inhabitants or your budget.
“No matter your substrate, proper cleaning is a must! Always remove your decorations prior to cleaning; you’ll be amazed how much waste ends up under there,” Dr. Jessica Fox, Certified Aquatic Veterinarian, told The Spruce Pets. Don’t worry: We have a favorite sand-cleaning tool that can make this process a lot easier.
Our favorite overall sand is Carib Sea Super Naturals Aquarium Sand, which is easy to clean and comes in a versatile medium grain. But there are lots of different types of aquarium sands that may work even better for your tank.
Carib Sea Super Naturals Aquarium Sand is simple, basic sand at a great price point that makes a superb neutral backdrop for any aquarium. There are no additives to drive excess algae growth or beneficial bacteria that you have to keep alive.
This sand is perfect for any aquarium. It is a fine enough grain to suit any bottom-dwelling fish but not too soft to never settle out with rapid water flow. Freshwater or saltwater, Carib Sea Super Naturals Aquarium Sand is an easy choice.
This sand can be used for terrestrial setups for aquatic turtles in addition to fully aquatic aquariums. No matter what your intended species, this sand is the best overall pick.

Works for all aquariums
A very fine sand can make an aquarium stand out, but it isn’t without its difficulties. Carib Sea’s Moonlight Sand is a beautiful fine-grain, but it is hard to keep clean 100 percent of the time. It provides a very soft surface for any bottom-dwelling fish and is a joy for jawfish and other burrowing fishes to scoop around.
Since it is such a fine grain, it can be hard for this product to settle on the bottom of the tank, especially when first adding it to the system and with any heavy water flow. You may need to adjust your filter outflow to ensure your substrate is not constantly moving. Given the lighter color, this substrate will pick up algae and detritus more quickly, so if a perfectly clean bottom is what you are aiming for, you should probably choose a different product with some color already in it.

Keeping live plants in your aquarium can be a worthwhile project, provided your fish are nice to aquarium plants! Bottom-foraging fishes, such as goldfish, can obliterate plants very quickly just given their digging nature.
Some live plants, such as those that can survive as floating plants, will do well in most of these sand substrates, provided they are not buried too deeply and lose contact with oxygen in the water. Others will require a planted substrate such as Fluval Bio Stratum.
This isn’t technically sand either, but using a plant-specific media will encourage better water flow around plant roots and can provide additional nutrition. Color options are limited with these products that typically resemble brown dirt coloration.
These types of substrates will also promote a healthy plant environment with a lower pH, which may stress various fish and invertebrates. If a different pH won’t suit your aquarium inhabitants, you are better off choosing an inert sand product.
Weight: 4.4, 8.8, 17.6 pounds | Color: Dark brown, brown
Want a tank with lots of contrast without the hassle of keeping white sand clean? Then you should try black sand, and our top pick is Flourite Black Sand. The black substrate is a great choice, especially for fluorescent designs featuring GloFish© and blue LED-lit decorations.
Unlike white sand, black sand is infinitely easier to keep clean, since a little bit of algae and debris will not be very noticeable. The only issue with this product is the inconsistent sizing, with some very large granules down to a very fine grain. Unlike some other plant-specific black sand, this one will not alter your water chemistry.

Hard to keep clean
Technically, this isn’t sand, but a very fine gravel. It is very hard to find an aquarium sand product that is more white than off-white, so if you are looking for a perfectly white, sand-like substrate, we recommend Imagitarium White Aquarium Sand. The white substrate can provide a beautiful contrast to vividly colored fish and invertebrates, in addition to brightly colored décor.
The main complaint with lighter colors and especially white substrates is that they are tricky to keep 100 percent clean and free of debris/algae. The larger-size granules of this sand make it easier to clean since you can be more aggressive with your vacuuming without sucking up small grains. If a super-white aquarium bed is important to you, keep a close eye on your water chemistry, in particular your phosphate and nitrate, and keep your bioload low.
Weight: 5 pounds | Color: White
Live sand products are specifically designed to start your saltwater tank’s nitrogen cycle ASAP. With many live sand products available on the market, our top choice is Nature’s Ocean Bio-Activ Live Aragonite Saltwater Aquarium Sand in Natural White. This sand comes preloaded with beneficial bacteria that are ready to start taking care of your fish’s waste, but don’t expect it to do all the heavy lifting.
And the bacteria included in this sand may not be the ideal blend for your aquarium, so expect a tiny bit of cycling at the start. Keep in mind that since this is a live product, expiration dates are critical.
This sand is a great neutral color and is a medium to fine grain, making it an ideal choice for bottom-dwelling fishes. The color allows for decreased maintenance and pairs well with most corals.
Weight: 10, 20, 40 pounds | Color: Light tan
Cleaning your aquarium sand doesn’t have to be an awful chore! With the Python Aquarium Maintenance System, you can easily clean your sand and then refill your tank without lugging buckets or heavy equipment. The Python system hooks up to any sink and will provide customizable suction levels while easily eliminating waste tank water.
Although traditionally made for gravel substrates, vacuums such as these can be easily adapted to sand substrates. The key feature is to pay close attention to the sand moving up the large vacuum chamber. Fine-grain sand will move faster, so a wider vacuum may be a better idea.
But with a Python system, you can simply decrease the water pull at the sink! Although these can be tricky to store, given their larger size, they are the best investment you can make in your aquarium cleaning protocol.

Black sand complements most décor

Fluorescent accents stand out under blue LED lights
-
Acts as a great base to complete a fluorescent underwater scene
Black sand complements most aquarium décor—simultaneously “neutral” and dramatic. Here, it provides the ideal background for the multi-colored accents to stand out. Under GloFish blue LED lights (sold separately), they pop and serve as a great backdrop to complete a fluorescent underwater scene with other GloFish plants and ornaments (sold separately).
You’ll need to rinse the sand thoroughly before using it to prevent dust from clouding up the tank water. You should also limit the flow rate through the siphon tube to avoid removing the sand when cleaning with a gravel vacuum.
Weight: 5 pounds | Color: Multi-colored
Although we didn’t test this Carib-Sea Arag-Alive Special Grade Reed Sand, it’s a top-rated pick at Amazon, so it’s worth including in our list. Several reviewers who gave this live reef aquarium sand a five-star rating prefer it over the brand’s Fiji Pink variety. “Doesn’t blow around like the Fiji stuff does,” says one reviewer, while providing the same beneficial marine bacteria to reduce “new tank” syndrome and help maintain the correct pH balance.
Another reviewer notes that the coarser grain—measuring between 1.0 and 2.0 millimeters—is “ideal for medium to high-flow tanks” and makes it “easier to clean as opposed to others where you get more sand sucked up than anything!” The slightly larger grain size also means fewer fine particles to make the water cloudy. No rinsing is required, and it cycles out the water quickly and efficiently.
The only downside to this live sand is that the coarser particles can impede burrowing for some types of fish.
Weight: 10, 20 pounds | Color: Natural white
Final Verdict
If you are looking to incorporate a sand substrate into your aquarium, you can’t go wrong with our best overall pick, Carib Sea Super Naturals Aquarium Sand. This sand is a great choice for many tank aesthetics and is easy to clean with its off-white color and medium grain. Don’t forget to pick up an aquarium sand cleaner, such as the Python Aquarium Maintenance System, to keep your aquarium healthy and clean.
What to Look For in Aquarium Sand
Grain Size
Grain size for sand usually comes in a millimeter range. Not all products will have this listed and instead use keywords like “coarse” or “fine.” Unless a specific millimeter size is given, one product’s “fine” could be the same as another’s “coarse.”
Saltwater vs. Freshwater
There is no need to differentiate between freshwater and saltwater sands. Any sand can be suitable for a freshwater or saltwater system. If you are using live sand that is not specific to saltwater or freshwater and use it in the opposite system, expect a higher bacterial die-off at the beginning of use, but then it will be just fine to use.
Specialty Sands
Specialty sands for bettas, shrimp, or other fish are nothing more than a marketing gimmick. This will cause you to pay more for sand that is the same as the other sand in the generic bag. There is no specific species requirement for sand.
Cleaning
Like any other substrate, you will need to clean your sand. Using a standard siphon is best, but the sand will be more active and lighter. A taller vacuum is preferred, but it will be the same process as cleaning any other substrate.
FAQ
-
Is fine sand or coarse sand better for aquariums?
The size of a grain of aquarium sand you choose does not matter much unless you have fish or invertebrates present who like to dig in the sand. If you have fish, such as jawfish, or invertebrates, such as crabs or lobsters, the type of substrate you choose should best mimic their natural environment. It may take a little bit more research, but your animals will thank you!
-
Can aquarium plants grow in sand?
Some aquarium plants can grow in sandy substrates, such as those that can either be free-floating or planted, but others will have higher substrate nutrient requirements and may instead require a planted substrate, usually clay-based.
-
How do you add sand to an aquarium?
Before adding any sand, rinse it thoroughly! No matter what product you select, always rinse your sand in a separate bucket of tank water prior to adding it to your aquarium. After rinsing, add enough sand to the bottom of your tank to cover everything by 1 to 2 inches. If you have any bottom-sifting fish or inverts, you may need to have a deeper sand base.
