It’s that time of year when everyone online debates whether we should be looking forward to fall or still enjoying summer. Should everyone be decorating for fall? Too soon? Or should we keep our home feeling like summer, until it’s not?
First of all, let me just remind you that there are no rules. This isn’t a group project. It’s your home so do what inspires you!
Today I’ll show you what inspires me.
In this post I’ll share the “first step” I took towards late summer and early fall decor. That’s right, for me there’s always an in between season no one else talks about!
I personally think that it’s lovely to savor the in between seasons, too.
We can enjoy the slow evolution in our home from one season to another, not just decorate for the height of each season. I don’t feel the need to exhaust myself trying to get ready or decorate for a new season, either.
I was on a walk at the beach near us last night and there were fall leaves already on the ground. This happens every August! Nature here doesn’t care that it isn’t October, or that leaves are falling ‘too early.” It’s slowly getting ready — and we can do that, too. The sun is still out, it’s still summer, but I really appreciated seeing the fall leaves. It’s giving me a gentle nod to what’s ahead.
That’s what I like to do and feel in my home, too.
We can appreciate and find beauty in the in between! You may not even experience four seasons outside at your house, so what always matters most is the feeling we want to create in our home.
Spoiler alert, you don’t have to follow any rules or calendars to tell you how to feel or when to decorate.
You might recall that I’ve been teaching what I’ve called a “slow evolution to a new season” in home decorating for the past 18 years (and in all of my books, too!). This is what has always inspired me at home in every season. I’ve loved hearing how that has inspired you, too!
Even while staying present and enjoying the season we’re in, we can slowly shift the decorative and functional elements in our room. We can start to get ready to really embrace the coziness and comforts of the fall season, even before the season starts.
This is how I create a peaceful sense of rhythm in life and at home, too.
By the way, the evolution of a home and a rhythm for every season is something we learn to do together in HomeBody Gathering Place. There’s an art and a science to decorating and creating a home this way, so I teach these rhythms all year round and for each season.

So here is my first step towards the season!
These gorgeous (faux!) faded blue/green toned hydrangeas on my living room mantel! It’s also decorating in a natural unforced way (even though it’s with faux stems, it feels very organic!)
I love finding ways to honor all of the seasons at home through this slow, natural evolution from one to the next!
If you are ready to begin your own slow evolution to fall, I definitely recommend these lovely faux hydrangeas!
They make a late summer early fall statement without clutter, fussy decor, or mess.
They aren’t going to leave crunchy leaves all over a table or mantel, and they’ll stay beautiful all season long! 10/10 the perfect fall decor to shift the season. The vase I’m using for them is the medium.
Here are a few fall mood boards to inspire you with other pretty items items that caught my eye! ENJOY!
