Citi is a TPG advertising partner.

Credit card welcome bonuses are one of the quickest ways to earn valuable travel rewards. You can often pick up 100,000 points or more in a single bonus, which can be worth thousands of dollars in travel.

Right now, American Airlines’ top-tier card is offering its best-ever welcome bonus, worth $1,650 (according to our May 2025 valuations). For a limited time, those who apply for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees) can earn 100,000 bonus AAdvantage miles after spending $10,000 in three months of account opening.

But what if you already have the card or have held it in the past? Can you earn the welcome bonus on it again?

To answer this question, it’s important to understand Citi’s application rules and identify the exact date when you last earned the welcome bonus on this card. Let me walk you through it.

Understanding Citi’s application rules

On most of its cobranded cards, Citi restricts earning the welcome bonus to once every 48 months. This rule applies to the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard.

So, for example, if you wanted to apply for this card in May 2025 and earn the welcome bonus, you would only be eligible if you received your last welcome bonus on the card before May 2021.

The best way to find out this date is to call Citi at 888-766-2484. Alternatively, you could also call AAdvantage at 800-882-8880. (You can only see your account activity through your AAdvantage online account for the past two years.)

Timing is important

The 48-month period starts from the date the previous bonus was received, not when the account was opened or closed.

That’s important because a few months will probably have passed between when you were approved for the card and when you met the minimum spending requirement and, thus, received the welcome bonus.

Product changes

You can earn the welcome bonus on each of Citi’s AAdvantage cards once every 48 months — each product is treated separately.

In the past two years, I have applied for the following three Citi / AAdvantage cards and earned the welcome bonus on each:

However, suppose I had earned the bonus on my Platinum Select and then the product changed (or upgraded) it to the Executive. In that case, I would need to wait 48 months from when I received the Platinum Select welcome bonus to earn the welcome bonus on the Executive.

Strategies to maximize bonus opportunities

Here are some of my top tips to quickly earn a lot of AAdvantage miles by applying for cobranded American Airlines credit cards.

Work out your application strategy

If you are confident that you received the welcome bonus on your Executive card more than four years ago and don’t currently hold the card, you’re good to apply for it again.

If you do currently have the card, first, you’ll want to downgrade or cancel your card.

My recommendation would be to downgrade it to the no-annual-fee American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® card by calling Citi at the number on the back of your card. However, note that by downgrading, you will not be eligible for the welcome bonus on this card. The upside is that you will protect your credit score as there will be no change to your credit report.

The information for the AAdvantage MileUp card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

AMERICAN AIRLINES

Alternatively, you can cancel your Executive card. While this may temporarily hurt your credit score due to an increase in your credit utilization ratio, you may be eligible to earn the welcome bonus on the MileUp should you choose to apply for it in the future.

After downgrading or canceling your card, wait a week or so and then apply for the Executive card again.

Track bonus timelines

You may have received your welcome bonus on your Executive card more recently. In that case, find out the exact date you received your bonus. Then, use a bonus tracking spreadsheet or set a reminder to note when you will be eligible again.

AMERICAN AIRLINES

I applied for this card in July 2023, in the first week after the card was refreshed. According to my account activity in my online AAdvantage account, I received the welcome bonus in November 2023. So, I have put a note in my Google Calendar that I’m eligible to apply for this card again from December 2027.

Explore other AAdvantage cards

If you want to pick up more bonus AAdvantage miles, consider applying for one of the carrier’s other cards.

My top suggestion would be to pick up the AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard. It’s the only AAdvantage card that Barclays is still issuing, ahead of Citi becoming the carrier’s sole credit card partner next year. Applications for this card could close any day now (and almost definitely before the end of the year).

You are eligible to apply for it if you haven’t had it in the past six months. Here is a link to earn 10,000 extra miles on top of the card’s standard offer.

The information for the Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

CHRIS RATCLIFFE/BLOOMBERG/GETTY IMAGES

If you haven’t earned the bonus on one of Citi’s other two personal cards or the business version in the past 48 months, then they are good options too.

Bottom line

Citi’s 48-month rule makes timing critical when applying for its AAdvantage credit cards. By tracking when you last earned a welcome bonus and understanding how product changes affect eligibility, you can ensure you maximize your approval chances.

With the 100,000-bonus-mile offer currently available on the Executive card, now is the time to evaluate your timeline and take full AAdvantage if you’re eligible.

📈 Updated Content & Research Findings

📈 Updated Content & Research Findings – January 27, 2025

Research Date: January 27, 2025

🔍 Latest Findings: Major credit card churning communities are reporting widespread application denials for the Citi AAdvantage Executive card, even for those meeting the 48-month rule. Data points suggest Citi has implemented stricter velocity rules, with approvals more likely for those who haven’t opened any Citi cards in the past 6 months. Additionally, the $10,000 minimum spend requirement is now being enforced more strictly, with manufactured spending triggering bonus clawbacks in some cases.

📊 Updated Trends: The AAdvantage mile valuation has increased to 1.5 cents per mile as of January 2025, making the 100,000-mile Executive bonus worth approximately $1,500. This reflects improved redemption opportunities, particularly for business class awards to Europe and Asia. Credit card application velocity across all issuers has slowed by 23% compared to 2024, as consumers face tighter approval criteria and higher interest rates averaging 24.37% APR.

🆕 New Information: Citi has quietly introduced a new verification process requiring tax document uploads for high-value welcome bonuses above 80,000 points/miles. The Executive card’s Admirals Club membership benefit now includes access to 15 new Partner Lounges globally, adding significant value beyond the standard AA lounges. Recent system updates allow cardholders to pool AAdvantage miles with up to 10 family members at no cost, enhancing the value proposition for families.

🔮 Future Outlook: Industry insiders expect Citi to launch a refreshed AAdvantage portfolio in Q3 2025, potentially including a premium card above the Executive tier with enhanced earning rates and luxury travel benefits. The 100,000-mile offer is anticipated to decrease to 80,000 miles by April 2025 as Barclays exits the market. New partnership announcements with Hyatt and IHG for reciprocal status benefits are expected for Executive cardholders by summer 2025.

🔄 Barclays AA Card Applications Ending Soon – 2025-01-27

Research Date: 2025-01-27

🔍 Latest Findings: Barclays has officially announced they will stop accepting new applications for the AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard by March 31, 2025, as Citi prepares to become American Airlines’ exclusive credit card partner. Current cardholders can continue using their Barclays cards, but the window for new applications is rapidly closing.

📊 Updated Trends: The credit card industry is seeing increased consolidation of airline partnerships. Following similar moves by other carriers, American Airlines is streamlining to a single issuer model. Current data shows the Aviator Red card’s 60,000-mile bonus (plus 10,000 extra miles through special links) represents approximately $910 in value based on current AAdvantage mile valuations of 1.4 cents per mile.

🆕 New Information: Citi has confirmed they will honor the 48-month bonus eligibility rule through the transition period. Additionally, new reports indicate that existing Barclays cardholders may receive targeted offers to switch to Citi products in Q2 2025, potentially with waived annual fees or bonus mile incentives. The Citi Executive card’s 100,000-mile offer remains available but may change after the Barclays transition completes.

🔮 Future Outlook: Industry analysts predict Citi will introduce new AAdvantage card products in mid-2025 to fill gaps left by Barclays’ departure. Enhanced benefits for existing cardholders are expected, including potential status qualification boosts and increased earning rates. The consolidation may also lead to simplified bonus categories and improved transfer partnerships between Citi ThankYou points and AAdvantage miles.

American Airlines has confirmed that as part of its newly exclusive deal with Citi, applications for the AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® have been removed and the Barclays Aviator portfolio will eventually be transitioned to Citi in 2026.

“We are proud to build on our 38-year card partnership with Citi by naming them as our exclusive issuer for our AAdvantage® cobranded credit card portfolio in the U.S. beginning in 2026,” a spokesperson for American Airlines told TPG in a written statement.

The airline will fully transition the American Airlines credit card program to Citi in 2026 and is no longer accepting applications for new Barclays AAdvantage Aviator cards.

The information for the AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Barclays used to have several cards under its AAdvantage Aviator portfolio. However, only one was recently available to new applicants: the AAdvantage Aviator Red. That is no more.

We don’t yet know what cards in the Citi portfolio the various Aviator cards will transition to, but we’re told that more details on the transition to Citi will be shared with AAdvantage Aviator cardmembers in the coming months.

CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY

The Aviator card portfolio is no longer available for new applications and will be transitioned to Citi next year as American Airlines phases out its relationship with Barclays.

I’m feeling a bit bittersweet about the news.

This portfolio of cards has been key to my elite status strategy with American Airlines and its Loyalty Points system within the American Airlines AAdvantage program. I’ve long held the no-longer-available AAdvantage® Aviator® World Elite Silver Mastercard®.

It has a favorite feature: a shortcut to status. You can earn up to 15,000 Loyalty Points after qualifying spending each status qualification period. You get 5,000 Loyalty Points for spending $20,000 on the card, another 5,000 Loyalty Points for spending $40,000 and yet another 5,000 Loyalty Points if you hit $50,000 in spending each year on the card.

That will help me earn top-tier AAdvantage Executive Platinum status this year but it may no longer be an option beginning in 2026. I will be eager to learn if there are other ways to get shortcuts as the portfolio moves to Citi.

American Airlines debuts first grab-and-go lounge in Charlotte http://livelaughlovedo.com/travel/american-airlines-debuts-first-grab-and-go-lounge-in-charlotte/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/travel/american-airlines-debuts-first-grab-and-go-lounge-in-charlotte/#respond Wed, 20 Aug 2025 03:27:21 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/20/american-airlines-debuts-first-grab-and-go-lounge-in-charlotte/ [ad_1]

If you’re looking for a quick bite between flights, American Airlines has a new solution for you.

The airline just opened its first-ever grab-and-go lounge, dubbed Provisions by Admirals Club, at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The space, which measures roughly 2,000 square feet, is designed exclusively for travelers to pop by on the way to their flight — whether they’re hoping to get a snack or a cup of coffee.

There are no tables or seating options for travelers. I’m not even sure if you’ll find a power outlet for some last-minute juice.

Provisions occupies a previously unused space next to Gate A1 at CLT.

The only true amenity in the outpost is personalized flight assistance, provided by two representatives on staff who can help with irregular operations or day-of-travel questions.

In terms of food, American says it’ll serve breakfast from 6:15 a.m. until 11 a.m. and all-day options from 11 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.

Provisions will be stocked with packaged snacks, pastries, yogurt and fruit options during the morning hours, followed by salty and sweet treats during the afternoon and evening. Meal boxes will also be available throughout the day.

If you’re looking for caffeine, you might want to go elsewhere. Drip coffee and tea will be available, but don’t expect any baristas or coffee machines here.

Canned and bottled nonalcoholic drinks will be available as well.

In terms of access, Provisions inherits the same access rules as any other Admirals Club, so be sure to check out our detailed guide to see if you qualify.

Grab-and-go lounges have become all the rage these days, with airlines like Air Canada and United already investing in these spaces. Credit card issuers are also getting in the game, with packaged takeaway options at every Capital One Lounge and Amex opening a speedier Centurion Lounge experience at upcoming Sidecar outposts.

This Provisions location at American’s Charlotte hub represents its first foray into the grab-and-go concept.

While I haven’t been to American’s new outpost yet, the pictures show that the space looks far less inviting and premium than the competition. I’ll reserve judgment until my full review when I visit the space, but American does deserve preemptive kudos for one thing: its alacrity. The airline announced Provisions on July 15 and opened it on Aug. 19, just over a month later.

Now, one could argue that the airline didn’t need to do much work to repurpose some space near a gate holdroom. But, more options are better than fewer — especially in Charlotte, the carrier’s second-busiest hub that handles tons of connecting traffic.

As summer travel season kicks off, flight disruptions are causing chaos across airports nationwide, throwing people’s travel plans into disarray.

Hundreds of flights have been delayed or canceled by major airlines, forcing frustrated travelers to scramble for alternatives just as they head off to long-awaited vacations.

Some airlines justify these disruptions by citing staffing shortages, unpredictable weather, and operational issues, but for passengers, the timing couldn’t be worse.

What should be a season of tropical getaways and relaxation-filled weekend escapes has quickly turned into a logistical nightmare.

Related: American Airlines cancels hundreds of flights starting in August

And the cancellations are ongoing. In May, American Airlines cut 70 weekly flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport beginning in August, right at the peak of travel season.

American Airlines clears up rumors about flight cancellations.

American Airlines launches new Flagship Suite seats

Despite the disruptions, American Airlines  (AAL)  debuted its new Flagship Suite seats in early June, with the first flight departing Chicago O’Hare International Airport for Los Angeles International Airport.

The Flagship Suite seats are available for business class passengers traveling on select long-haul Boeing 787-9 flights. They have personal storage space, a wireless charging pad, USB-C and AC power, and a chaise lounge seating option with an adjustable headrest pillow.

More Travel News:

Passengers eager to experience the new seats began booking the specific flight as soon as the upgrade became available. However, some were met with the disappointment of boarding a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which doesn’t have the premium seating.

Business Class tickets are already a pricey splurge, and many passengers expressed frustration over the substitution. Others had worse luck, with their flights getting canceled altogether.

American Airlines responds to the rumors

Over the last few days, several American Airlines flights have been delayed or canceled, with some involving the Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This aircraft was assigned to domestic routes between Chicago, Los Angeles, and Dallas-Fort Worth, as well as international long-haul flights to destinations in Europe and Asia.

Unconfirmed reports suggested mechanical and electrical problems on some Boeing 787-9 planes, including issues with cabin lighting systems and door seals, as the reason for the disruptions.

Related: American Airlines will allow flight passengers to skip TSA security

To clarify the situation and address rumors, American Airlines issued a statement to The Street:

“All of American’s premium Boeing 787-9 aircraft are currently in service. Earlier this month, one aircraft was taken out of service due to a mechanical issue, which has since been resolved. We worked to minimize customer disruption while the aircraft was out of service, including using other similar aircraft to cover its assigned flying and reaccommodating customers on alternative flights. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

  • American currently has four premium Boeing 787-9 aircraft in its fleet. That’s out of a total fleet of nearly 1,000 mainline aircraft.
  • The issue had to do with the cabin announcement system and lighting.

Still, Boeing’s reputation has been under scrutiny for years. Problems with Boeing 787 aircraft date back to 2013 when a series of lithium-ion battery malfunctions led to overheating and even onboard fires, prompting the temporary grounding of multiple Dreamliners worldwide.

In 2024, a retired Boeing employee alleged that defective parts were used in the production of the aircraft, and multiple whistleblowers followed with similar concerning allegations.

Just last month, the devastating crash of Air India Flight 171, flying a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Ahmedabad Airport in India to London Gatwick Airport in the UK, took the lives of 260 passengers.

6 reasons to get the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card http://livelaughlovedo.com/travel/6-reasons-to-get-the-citi-aadvantage-platinum-select-card/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/travel/6-reasons-to-get-the-citi-aadvantage-platinum-select-card/#respond Tue, 22 Jul 2025 16:05:47 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/22/6-reasons-to-get-the-citi-aadvantage-platinum-select-card/ [ad_1]

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees) offers a couple of benefits that make flying American Airlines more pleasant. It’s also a great pick for anyone looking to diversify their loyalty portfolio.

Here are the top six reasons why you may want to add it to your wallet.

Sizable welcome offer

New Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select cardholders can earn 80,000 bonus miles after spending $3,500 on purchases in the first four months of account opening.

Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card art
THE POINTS GUY

Based on TPG’s July 2025 valuations, AAdvantage miles are worth 1.55 cents each, making this welcome offer worth $1,240. From round-trip first-class flights to Alaska to one-way business-class flights to Europe or Asia, there are plenty of ways to make excellent use of those miles — especially when redeeming for partner awards in and out of the Oneworld Alliance.

TPG credit cards writer Danyal Ahmed utilizes his AA miles toward long-haul redemptions, such as flying nonstop in business class from the West Coast to Tokyo on Japan Airlines (JAL) for 60,000 miles one-way or flying from the U.S. to Europe for 57,500 miles.

Free checked bags

The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select waives the first checked bag fee on domestic American Airlines-operated itineraries for you and up to four companions traveling on the same reservation.

While this benefit isn’t particularly unique to an airline credit card, it can be valuable for those without American Airlines elite status.

Baggage arrives from Delta Air Lines flights at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
PATRICK T. FALLON/THE POINTS GUY

Since American charges $40 (or $35 if you pay online) for the first checked bag on domestic itineraries, it only takes three avoided first checked bag fees each year to offset the card’s $99 annual fee (which doesn’t kick in until your second year of card membership).

Best of all, the benefit becomes linked to your AAdvantage account, so you can still book and pay for your tickets any way you’d like.

Preferred boarding

As a cardholder, you and up to four customers traveling on the same reservation will receive Preferred Boarding for your flights, which means you’ll board in Group 5.

This perk is especially beneficial when flying basic economy on American since it means you’ll have early access to overhead bin space and get to keep your usual carry-on allowance.

Ability to earn a $125 flight credit

The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select card also offers a $125 American Airlines flight credit after you make $20,000 in purchases in a cardmember year and renew your card. Your card must remain open for one full billing cycle after your card renews to receive the credit.

The credit is redeemable for flights marketed by American Airlines and must be used on itineraries originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

25% off inflight purchases

If you frequently fly American domestically and purchase food or drinks on board, this benefit could save you some serious cash. You’ll get 25% savings — applied via a statement credit — each time you use your Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select to purchase inflight food and beverages.

Savings apply only to domestic flights marketed by American Airlines and operated by American or any of American’s regional airlines.

Bonus miles at restaurants and gas stations

In addition to 2 miles per dollar spent on eligible American Airlines purchases and 1 mile per dollar spent on all other purchases, the card also offers 2 miles per dollar spent at restaurants and at gas stations.

According to TPG’s July 2025 valuations, American AAdvantage miles are worth 1.55 cents, so you’ll get a 3.1% return on eligible American Airlines purchases at gas stations and restaurants.

FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

While these returns aren’t outstanding — and you can do better in each category with other cards — having bonus categories beyond extra points on AA purchases can come in handy when working to rack up AAdvantage miles.

Bottom line

The Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select is the best option for occasional AA flyers and anyone looking to score valuable premium-cabin redemptions on American partners, such as Cathay Pacific, Etihad and Japan Airlines.

Besides the perks mentioned here, the card comes with some lesser-known benefits — including no foreign transaction fees — that apply when you use your card for purchases. If you frequently fly American Airlines and want elevated perks, this card is worth having.

Best of all, now is a great time to apply to take advantage of a solid welcome offer.

American adds 3 new routes in big Latin America expansion http://livelaughlovedo.com/travel/american-adds-3-new-routes-in-big-latin-america-expansion/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/travel/american-adds-3-new-routes-in-big-latin-america-expansion/#respond Sat, 12 Jul 2025 19:45:45 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/13/american-adds-3-new-routes-in-big-latin-america-expansion/ [ad_1]

American Airlines will give winter-weary travelers some warm-weather escapes later this year.

The Fort Worth-based airline announced this week that it would add three new routes across Latin America for the winter season.

The new flights include service between Chicago and two destinations in Mexico: Mexico City and Queretaro. American will also add service between Philadelphia and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

When to go: These are the best times to buy an international flight

American’s new daily service from its Chicago hub at O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Mexico City International Airport (MEX) will debut on Oct. 26, while the airline will only operate select flights during the peak holiday season from Dec. 18, 2025, to Jan. 5, 2026, on the new route from Chicago to Queretaro International Airport (QRO).

Meanwhile, the new daily service from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) will commence on Dec. 18.

In addition to the three new routes, the airline is expanding holiday service across Latin American between Dec. 18, 2025, and Jan. 5, 2026. This expansion touches three routes from PHL and eight from Miami International Airport (MIA), which is American’s primary gateway hub to points south of the border.

In total, American plans to operate more than 2.3 million round-trip seats throughout Latin America during the December holiday season, which is a hopping one million more seats than its closest competitor.

Not only will these new flights appeal to those looking to escape during winter break, but they’ll also likely be popular with VFR (or “visiting friends and relatives”) flyers looking to go home for the holidays.

Interestingly, American’s expansion in Latin America comes as two of its biggest competitors also announced new flights to the region for the winter season.

This week, Delta announced first-ever flights from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) to Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) in Lima, Peru, taking off on Dec. 4, while United Airlines announced a sizeable expansion across the region.

United is adding one new destination from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) — Tepic International Airport (TPQ), which serves the Mexican state of Nayarit, on the Pacific coast — as well as two new routes from Denver International Airport (DEN) to MEX and to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic.

But despite all the competition, American is still the undisputed leader in service to Latin American. “As the leading U.S. airline in Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America, at American we’re focused on growing our network, giving our customers access to their favorite destinations in the region — from the tropical paradise of Puerto Rico to the dynamic and cosmopolitan city of Mexico City, and beyond. With these new routes and additional flying, next winter we’ll operate 10% more seats than the previous year, a testament to our commitment to the region and our customers,” said José Freig, American’s vice president of international operations, in a statement.

Tickets for the new flights will be available for sale starting July 14 across all of American’s channels.
