Field Trip Friday Was a Blast at Maker Faire Bay Area

Friday at Maker Faire Bay Area was Field Trip day. There were performers and music, droids and drones. Our editors tried and failed to see everything, so here are some of our favorite exhibits so far. Don’t miss these (and much more) Saturday and Sunday.

Daniel Simu and his Acrobot perform on the Foundry Stage.

Come play Jordan Wolfe’s AP-1 Acoustic Drum Machine, with a drum pad connected to stepper motors to play real instruments! MIDI compatible too!

Connor Tan’s miniature animatronic Captain Rex performs the Star Tours ride just like the glory days at Disneyland! Connor designed and 3D printed the whole robot — without fasteners — and vibe-coded the animation using Claude Code. Amazing project!

3D printed robot hand by Kelvin Robotics, designed with the help of Chat-GPT, can sign all the letters of American Sign Language.

Animatronic full-size C-3PO looking sharp, with the R2 Builders Group in the Foundry. Lots more droids to see this weekend!

Geodesic playhouse built from laser-cut cardboard and velcro cable ties, by Design Laughter.  “Like giant cardboard Magna Tiles.” Get a kit!

Spacebar arcade is the only virtual arcade game that lets you battle your opponent from the inside!

Stroboscopic spin art with the Odyssey Board electronics kit — like Tinkertoys for making cool electromechanical gadgets, with clever connectors that fit standard servos, LEDs, and such. Nice!

Spyntonia lets you experience flowing beams of light — like light painting in real life!

See it all yourself at Maker Faire Bay Area!

Terrifying New Characters in ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 http://livelaughlovedo.com/entertainment/the-terrifying-new-characters-in-five-nights-at-freddys-2s-trailer-just-confirmed-the-franchise-is-moving-in-the-right-direction/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/entertainment/the-terrifying-new-characters-in-five-nights-at-freddys-2s-trailer-just-confirmed-the-franchise-is-moving-in-the-right-direction/#respond Mon, 28 Jul 2025 12:25:02 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/28/the-terrifying-new-characters-in-five-nights-at-freddys-2s-trailer-just-confirmed-the-franchise-is-moving-in-the-right-direction/ [ad_1]

The official trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 doesn’t just introduce a new cast of animatronic nightmares; it signals a move into darker territory for the franchise. While the first relied on the familiar creep factor of Freddy Fazbear and his haunted pizzeria, the sequel is going all in on evolving the animatronics just as the games did, introducing new unnerving creations, and twisting the existing ones into something worse. The toy versions of the core mascots (and Withered Bonnie), plus Mangle, Balloon Boy, and the Puppet, are here to terrify, escalate the stakes, and make FNaF 2 feel less like a haunted house and more like a predator’s playground.

With Jim Henson’s Creature Shop once again crafting the animatronics, the sequel’s new mechanical villains don’t just look real; they feel alive. The trailer’s glimpses of Mangle’s twisted limbs glinting in the low light, Balloon Boy’s hollow-eyed grin, the Puppet’s ominous claws, and Withered Bonnie’s nightmarish overall appearance are enough to confirm that these characters will push the boundaries of practical horror. Thanks largely to them, FNaF 2 is shaping up to be far more unhinged than its predecessor.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Introduces a Terrifying New Threat in Mangle

Mangle has always stood out as one of the most disturbing characters in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe, but the live-action version takes things to another level. Unlike the more polished toy animatronics, Mangle isn’t just broken but something else entirely. The design, with its spider-like body and dangling parts, makes Mangle feel less like a malfunctioning mascot and more like a mechanical predator that’s been cobbled together for the sole purpose of hunting. In the trailer, Mangle’s movements, whether it’s hanging from ceilings, riding atop a car, or lunging from above, lend her a feral unpredictability. She’s the kind of threat that doesn’t just appear in doorways or security feeds — she comes for you from angles you can’t anticipate, just as she did in the games.

This chaotic energy feeds into one of the series’ more popular fan theories that Mangle is responsible for the “Bite of ‘87,” the infamous incident where a victim’s frontal lobe was bitten out, leaving them permanently wounded by the attack. Whether or not FNaF 2 will directly confirm this piece of lore for the film franchise remains to be seen, but the trailer does lean into the exact behavior that earned her this reputation in the first place. There’s a shot of Mangle grabbing someone from above that showcases exactly how predatory and unexpected she can be. If the first film was about surviving the night, the sequel looks like it’s about surviving Mangle based on its trailer.

Balloon Boy and the Puppet Step Into the Spotlight

While Mangle may be stealing most of the attention, Balloon Boy’s appearance is just as unsettling, as his design radiates eerie discomfort. That frozen, doll-like grin and glassy-eyed stare look even more wrong in live-action. The mere sight of his vacant expression, paired with the uncanny realism of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop work, is enough to make him feel like a threat waiting to come alive. Balloon Boy’s presence taps into a different kind of fear: the instinctive distrust of toys that smile a little too wide, or linger a little too long in your peripheral vision.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2′ SDCC Footage Teases One of the Games’ Most Notorious Villains

‘Scream’ icon Skeet Ulrich will reunite with Matthew Lillard on the anticipated follow-up to the smash-hit horror movie.

Then there’s the Puppet, whose appearances in the trailer feel deliberately designed to ignite fan speculation. We see her elongated, claw-like fingers extending from above, and in another quick shot, we see her silently creeping up behind Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), her stark black-and-white design cutting sharply through the shadows. It’s a chilling tease that hints this version of the Puppet may lean harder into a ghostly, almost spectral form of terror. Skeet Ulrich, who joined the cast of FNaF 2, teased at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 that he plays “somebody with a very particular and specific past and somebody with a very deep emotional tie to what’s going on.” Many fans believe he will portray Henry Emily, William Afton’s (Matthew Lillard) former business partner, whose daughter Charlotte — one of the franchise’s most pivotal and tragic figures — died, and her spirit possesses the Puppet. If the sequel leans into this lore, the Puppet could become not only one of the film’s scariest figures, but also one of the most emotionally resonant.

The Toy Animatronics Aren’t Playing Around

Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, and Toy Chica might look shinier and more “kid-friendly” than the original animatronics, but the FNaF 2 trailer makes it clear they’re far from playful. Their wide, glassy eyes and eerily smooth plastic faces make them feel like corrupted toys, designed to lure before they strike. Their overall appearances suggest predators that stalk in plain sight, replacing the slow-burn tension of the first film with a relentless, in-your-face menace. Plus, the trailer concludes with a terrifying flash of Withered Bonnie, his decayed frame and gaping hole where a face should be, curating a single image that feels like the stuff of pure nightmare fuel, likely because that’s exactly what he will (and should) be.

The sequel has a chance to explore the emotional weight of the hauntings further, connecting Afton’s crimes to the animatronics terrorizing the night. With Mangle’s chaotic violence, Balloon Boy’s uncanny presence, the Puppet’s spectral menace, and the Toy Animatronics’ deceptively cheerful designs, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 looks poised to take the franchise’s horror to a new, lore-driven level. The first movie proved that FNaF could work in live action and cracked open the door to Freddy Fazbear’s haunted legacy. The sequel looks ready to kick it off its hinges, letting Mangle, the Puppet, and their twisted companions drag the franchise into a much more terrifying chapter.

Walt Disney recently joined Imagineering’s animatronic class to honor Disney’s 70th anniversary—so we’re handing out superlatives to the other standout robots.

Walt Disney is just the latest animatronic to be featured in Disney Parks’ experiences and attractions. The figure debuted for Disneyland’s 70th birthday at the Main Street Opera House, headlining a new show.

In Walt Disney – A Magical Life, you can come face-to-face with the man behind the name, programmed to present his history as Imagineering’s latest tech feat. The figure joins the legacy of Disney’s contribution to theme park advancements, combining animation and robotics for his animatronics, which started with a bird and now bears the face of its creator.

And he’s not the only memorable animatronic to grace Disney Parks with his presence. Here are some other notable entries, with yearbook-style superlatives to explain the impressions they make.

Most likely to get into trouble: Hondo Onaka in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

He’s always getting unsuspecting tourists to do coaxium runs for him on the Millennium Falcon. If you’re not careful, you’ll land on the First Order’s suspect list. And unfortunately, if that happens, Hondo might be MIA, just as his animatronic so often is.

Most likely to ghost you: the 999 ghosts in The Haunted Mansion

And only after they try to follow you home first, like the Hitchhiking Ghosts.

Sassiest: Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones Adventure

Dr. Jones spends the entire ride complaining that he has to save our skins; it’s glorious. Plus he’s the original stuntronic, always having to dangle in front of that incoming boulder.

Best Makeover: Ariel in Ariel’s Undersea Adventure

The lore behind her soft-serve-ice-cream-looking hair of yesteryear haunts the internet; we’re glad she was able to get her look fixed.

Best Dressed: Everyone in Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

Seeing Tiana in her mother’s fashions and iconic 1920s New Orleans textiles and textures makes this our pick for best dressed. That goes for the rest of the characters too, especially once the ride gets to its showstopping finale.

Class Clown: Figment the Dragon from Journey Into Imagination with Figment

That Figment, always up to some nonsense, but at least he’s full of imagination and lots of surprising sights and smells to discover.

The Cutest: Grogu in Galaxy’s Edge

Galaxys Edge Disney Parks

It’s no contest; being able to meet and greet an interactive Baby Yoda who makes the noises makes us want to protect him at all costs too.

Most likely to succeed: The children of the world in It’s a Small World

Yeah—more like succeeding in leading the animatronic uprising for having to sing that earworm of a song for 70 years.

Most underrated: Captain Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean

Geoffrey Rush’s iconic performance as Captain Barbossa also got its own animatronic inside Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean and fits right in so well, many don’t realize he’s being featured. The real pirate’s pirate, our apple-a-day king—he’s just missing the monkey, Jack.

The most scarily expressive: The Shaman from Avatar in Pandora’s Na’vi River Journey

That’s one very realistic animatronic. And like in the Avatar movies, it sees you.

The most chatty: The birds inside the Enchanted Tiki Room

They’re the OG blueprint of the animatronics, so we’ll allow it for another 70 years at least.

The most athletic: Spider-Man Stuntronic at Avengers Campus

Spidey does the flips in one of the most thrilling moments at Avengers Campus, where the “struntronic” flies through the sky before an actor takes over the performance! Even more excitingly, sometimes the robot webslinger misses.

The GOAT: The Disneyland Goat on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Not only is it still proudly perched in its spot, it provides the distraction to make the coaster all the more thrilling. Never forget to look at the goat and lock in.

From WonderLab to Kickstarter: The Small World of Garner Holt’s Animatronic Songbird Kit

Just over a year ago, during the grand opening of WonderLab at Give Kids The World Village, Dale and I first saw an interactive fabrication and robotics activity that would later become the Garner Holt Animatronic Songbird Mini STEAM Build Kit. Last week, I stumbled across this hands-on robotics project on Kickstarter.  Then the communication crossfire started, and connections were made!

As covered in Make: Things newsletter (Orlando’s WonderLab: A New Kind of Makerspace for Kids), WonderLab is a state-of-the-art makerspace designed to inspire children facing critical illnesses through creativity and technology. During the grand opening, Garner Holt Productions—known for creating some of the world’s most amazing animatronics for Disney, Universal, and many many more—showcased an early version of their mechanical songbird kit, demonstrating how engineering and artistry combine to create lifelike motion and how anyone can learn to make them and bring them to life.

The prototype was a perfect blend of STEAM education with the magic of animatronics. Visitors saw firsthand how servo motors, linkages, and sound synchronization could mimic nature—making technology concepts tangible and tactile.

This concept has evolved into a fully-fledged DIY kit now funding on Kickstarter. The Animatronic Songbird Mini retains the charm of the original but is optimized for makers of all ages. Garner Holt’s kit merges theme park magic with maker tech—perfect for educators, tinkerers, and curious minds.

This kit has less than ten days left on Kickstarter AND also has give-back perks for the WonderLab!
