As I debug my latest app under the glow of my smart desk lamp in my San Francisco loft, the ping from my Apple Watch reminds me of a misplaced keychain—turns out, it’s just a notification for the new watchOS update. That seamless integration got me excited about Apple’s latest drop: Apple releases watchOS 26.2.1, adding Precision Finding support for AirTag 2. Released on January 26, 2026, this update brings wrist-based tracking to a whole new level, making it easier than ever to locate your essentials without fumbling for your iPhone. If you’re like me, constantly optimizing your tech ecosystem for smarter living, this is a game-changer that unlocks tomorrow’s convenience today. Let’s dive into what this means for your daily grind, from enhanced findability to seamless compatibility.

What’s New in watchOS 26.2.1: A Quick Overview

Apple releases watchOS 26.2.1, adding Precision Finding support for AirTag 2, and it’s packed with tweaks that refine your wearable experience. This minor update focuses on compatibility with the second-generation AirTag, extending its ultra-wideband (UWB) capabilities directly to compatible Apple Watches. No more relying solely on your iPhone—now your wrist can guide you to lost items with haptic, visual, and audio cues.

Beyond tracking, the update includes bug fixes for smoother performance, ensuring your Apple Watch runs like a well-oiled machine. It’s a free download via the Apple Watch app on an iPhone running iOS 26.2.1, under General > Software Update. If you’re into smart home automation like I am, this ties beautifully into a connected lifestyle where everything just works.

Precision Finding Explained: How It Works on Your Apple Watch

When Apple releases watchOS 26.2.1, adding Precision Finding support for AirTag 2, it leverages UWB technology to pinpoint items with remarkable accuracy. Imagine arrow-guided directions on your watch face, complete with distance readouts like “20 ft to your left.” This haptic feedback vibrates to steer you, while audio chimes and visual indicators make the hunt intuitive.

To set it up, head to Control Center on your Watch, add the Find AirTag button, and select your item. It’s compatible with Apple Watch Series 9 or later (excluding SE) and Ultra 2 or later. For those weekend coding sessions when I misplace my backpack, this feature saves precious time—proving tech can simplify even the smallest frustrations.

AirTag 2 Upgrades: Why This Pairing Matters

The AirTag 2 itself boasts a 50% expanded Precision Finding range, longer Bluetooth connectivity, and a louder speaker for easier locating in noisy environments. When paired with watchOS 26.2.1, it transforms your Apple Watch into a standalone tracker, ideal for hikes or runs without your phone. This synergy highlights Apple’s ecosystem strength, where devices communicate seamlessly.

With the fourth beta of iOS 26.1, Apple added a toggle that makes Liquid Glass more opaque and reduces transparency. We tested the beta to see where the toggle works and what it looks like.

If you have the latest iOS 26.1 beta, you can go to Settings > Display and Brightness to get to the new option. Tap on Liquid Glass, then choose “Tinted.” The Tinted option increases the opacity of Liquid Glass UI elements and improves contrast, while the Clear option is the standard Liquid Glass look.

Apple’s new option looks different in both light and dark mode, increasing opacity in color consistent with each option. It works for Lock Screen notifications and within apps to make menu and navigation bars less transparent, but there is little to no change with other parts of the OS like Control Center, the App Library, and app icons and widgets on the Home Screen.

iOS 26.1 beta 4 is available to developers and public beta testers at the current time. We’re expecting iOS 26.1 to be released later in October, and that’s when everyone will have access to the new settings.

John Ternus, rumored to succeed Tim Cook as CEO http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/meet-john-ternus-the-50-year-old-apple-executive-and-former-swimming-champ-whos-rumored-to-succeed-tim-cook-as-ceo/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/meet-john-ternus-the-50-year-old-apple-executive-and-former-swimming-champ-whos-rumored-to-succeed-tim-cook-as-ceo/#respond Tue, 07 Oct 2025 14:48:51 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/10/07/meet-john-ternus-the-50-year-old-apple-executive-and-former-swimming-champ-whos-rumored-to-succeed-tim-cook-as-ceo/ [ad_1]

Apple is quietly orchestrating its most significant leadership transition in more than a decade, and at the center of succession planning sits John Ternus, the company’s 50-year-old senior vice president of hardware engineering. As Tim Cook approaches his 65th birthday next month, industry observers and Apple insiders increasingly view Ternus as the most likely candidate to inherit the reins of one of the world’s most valuable technology companies, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has reported accurately on Apple for years thanks to sources deep within the company.

The speculation intensified after Apple’s chief operating officer Jeff Williams, once considered Cook’s natural successor, stepped down from operational responsibilities in July and will leave the company by year’s end. With Williams out of contention, Gurman says Ternus has emerged as “the most likely heir apparent.”

Ternus brings a combination of technical expertise and institutional knowledge to the succession conversation. According to his LinkedIn profile, the mechanical engineer joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and has overseen hardware engineering for virtually every major product in the company’s current portfolio. His fingerprints are on every generation of iPad, the latest iPhone lineup, and AirPods. He also played a crucial role in the Mac’s transition to Apple silicon. He’s also played a prominent role during Apple’s most recent keynotes, introducing products like the new iPhone Air.

The timing of Ternus’s increased visibility isn’t coincidental. Apple’s public relations teams have begun “putting the spotlight on Ternus,” according to Gurman, signaling the company may be preparing for a gradual transition of power. Beyond product launches, Ternus has taken on responsibilities that extend well beyond traditional hardware engineering, influencing product roadmaps, features, and strategic decisions typically reserved for more senior executives.

At 50 years old, Ternus mirrors Cook’s age when he became CEO in 2011, positioning him for potentially a decade or more of leadership. This longevity factor appeals to Apple’s board of directors, who prefer stability in leadership transitions. His engineering background also matches where Apple is going as a company, exploring emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and mixed reality.

Ternus’ path to Cupertino

Born in 1975, Ternus’s journey to the top of Apple began at the University of Pennsylvania, where he distinguished himself both academically and athletically. He graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, majoring in mechanical engineering. But Ternus wasn’t just focused on his studies—he was a competitive swimmer who made his mark in the pool.

A 1994 report in The Daily Pennsylvanian revealed Ternus’s athletic prowess when he won both the 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley at a university swimming competition. More remarkably, Ternus is an “all-time letter winner” for the UPenn men’s swimming team, representing the varsity swim team a record number of times.

The early years: From VR to Apple

After graduation, Ternus joined Virtual Research Systems as a mechanical engineer. Virtual Research Systems, while not widely known today, was part of the early virtual-reality wave of the 1980s and 1990s, working on VR headsets and immersive technologies. This four-year stint exposed Ternus to cutting-edge display technology and human-computer interfaces—experience that would prove invaluable during his later work on products like the Apple Vision Pro.

Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, at a pivotal moment in the company’s history. Steve Jobs had returned, the iMac had revitalized the company, and Apple was preparing to launch products that would redefine entire industries. Starting as a relatively junior member of the product design team, Ternus initially worked on external Mac monitors.

By 2013, Ternus had been promoted to vice president of hardware engineering, initially overseeing AirPods, Mac, and iPad development. His portfolio expanded in 2020 when he took charge of iPhone hardware engineering, previously overseen directly by Dan Riccio. When Riccio stepped down in January 2021 to focus on the Apple Vision Pro project, Ternus was promoted to senior vice president of hardware engineering, making him a member of Apple’s executive team.

Apple’s public relations teams have begun “putting the spotlight on Ternus,” according to Gurman, signaling the company may be preparing for a gradual transition of power. This shift is evident in Ternus’s increased visibility at product launches and industry events. He has become a regular presenter at Apple’s keynote events, revealing refreshes of the iMac and MacBook Pro, introducing the 2018 iPad Pros, unveiling the iMac Pro, and presenting the completely redesigned 2019 Mac Pro. Crucially, Ternus was also responsible for unveiling Apple Silicon to the world, as well as the new iPhone Air.

“Ternus stands out,” Gurman wrote in his latest report. “He’s charismatic and well-regarded by Apple loyalists and trusted by Cook, who has granted Ternus more responsibilities. The executive has emerged as a key decision-maker on product road maps, features and strategies, extending his influence beyond the traditional scope of a hardware engineering chief.”

“When Apple began selling the iPhone 17 lineup last month, it was Ternus who ushered in customers to the company’s Regent Street store in London (a role Cook served at Apple’s Fifth Avenue location),” Gurman continued.

Apple’s leadership in transition

The succession question has gained urgency as Apple faces broader executive turnover. John Giannandrea, the senior vice president overseeing Apple’s AI strategy, reportedly has an uncertain future following setbacks with Siri development, according to Gurman, who added that hardware technologies chief Johny Srouji is “evaluating his future,” and environmental policy leader Lisa Jackson is also considering retirement.

For a company that has prided itself on organizational stability throughout Cook’s tenure, the simultaneous departure of multiple senior executives marks a significant shift. Cook himself has given mixed signals about retirement plans, telling CNBC in January that he can’t envision “doing nothing” and will “always want to work.” However, Bloomberg reports Cook may eventually transition to a chairman role, similar to moves by Jeff Bezos at Amazon and Bill Gates at Microsoft.

The choice of Ternus would represent Apple’s preference for promoting from within rather than seeking external leadership. It would also signal a shift toward prioritizing technical innovation over purely operational excellence, as the company seeks to reinvigorate product categories beyond the iPhone that generates the majority of its revenue. The company’s struggles with the Apple Vision Pro and its efforts to compete in artificial intelligence suggest technical leadership may be exactly what Apple needs for its next chapter.

The Best Warren Buffett Stocks to Buy with $1,000 Right Now http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/the-best-warren-buffett-stocks-to-buy-with-1000-right-now/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/the-best-warren-buffett-stocks-to-buy-with-1000-right-now/#respond Mon, 06 Oct 2025 06:31:06 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/10/06/the-best-warren-buffett-stocks-to-buy-with-1000-right-now/ [ad_1]

Warren Buffett’s company owns these stocks, and they could be great additions to your portfolio.

Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett helped turn the investment conglomerate into one of the world’s most valuable companies. With a market capitalization of approximately $1.08 trillion as of this writing, Berkshire ranks as the world’s 11th-biggest business (at the time of this writing).

Given Berkshire’s incredible success, it’s little wonder that many investors pay close attention to the company’s stock holdings and strategies. Read on to see why two Motley Fool contributors think that these Berkshire Hathaway portfolio components stand out as great buys right now.

One of Buffett’s favorites

Jennifer Saibil (Apple): Warren Buffett has been selling Apple (AAPL 0.28%) stock left and right, so I might be going against the grain to say that Apple is one of his best stocks to buy today. But Buffett himself is a contrarian investor, so I’m only following in his footsteps.

In any case, Apple is still the largest stock in the portfolio, accounting for more than a fifth of the total, so Buffett hasn’t lost confidence in it at all. He has said he would never sell as long as he’s controlling Berkshire Hathaway, but that time is coming to an end, and investors are already speculating as to whether Greg Abel will keep it in the portfolio.

But many of the same reasons Buffett originally bought it still hold today. Apple has a large and differentiated consumer products business with a sticky ecosystem, and loyal fans purchase an assortment of its devices, which easily connect to each other. Although it’s often labeled as a tech business, which isn’t in Buffett’s wheelhouse, it’s at least as much the kind of consumer products business that he loves. The tech part also gives him exposure to artificial intelligence (AI), which may not be the reason he bought it, but is a reason many other investors might find it exciting.

So far, Apple Intelligence has disappointed investors. Apple hasn’t released AI services that stand out, and it doesn’t have a strong timeline for when it will.

Still, the recent debut of its newest iPhone, the iPhone Air, demonstrates why fans love Apple and rush to buy its latest launches. It’s the thinnest smartphone on the market, and the design appeals to style-conscious users who often wear their devices as statement pieces. Apple just debuted several new launches that will go on sale later this month, including the new iPhone17 that ramps up the quality and capabilities users love and pay up for, and new AirPods that use Apple Intelligence to translate language in real time.

In other words, Apple is still on top of its game, and it isn’t likely that its customers are going anywhere else anytime soon. However, Apple stock fell after the new products were announced, and it’s down 10% this year. The market didn’t seem to think its launches had enough innovation, especially with AI. That makes this a great opportunity to buy on the dip for the long-term investor.

Amazon stock still looks like a great long-term play

Keith Noonan (Amazon): Like Apple, Amazon (AMZN -1.34%) stock has been a high-profile tech-sector underperformer in 2025. The e-commerce and cloud computing giant’s share price is up just 2% across this year’s trading. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 index’s level has risen roughly 15%, and the Nasdaq Composite‘s level has surged approximately 18%.

Also like Apple, Amazon is also part of Berkshire Hathaway’s stock portfolio. Coming in at just 0.7% of Berkshire’s public stock holdings, Amazon occupies a relatively small position in the investment conglomerate’s portfolio — but I think the tech leader stands out as a strong long-term investment at today’s prices.

Trading at roughly 33.5 times this year’s expected earnings, Amazon admittedly still has a growth-dependent valuation. On the other hand, the extent to which the stock has underperformed the broader market in recent years points to an opportunity. For reference, the company’s share price has risen just 43% over the last five years. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have both more than doubled across that stretch.

There are some good reasons behind the underperformance. For starters, the company’s e-commerce business faced some substantial headwinds from supply chain disruptions and inflationary trends connected to the pandemic. With the majority of the company’s sales still coming from its e-commerce business, Amazon is also facing some pressures from tariffs.

On the other hand, Amazon remains one of the world’s strongest businesses — and it’s likely in the early stages of capitalizing on AI-related tailwinds that power incredible new growth phases. The growth catalysts that AI can present for the company’s cloud-infrastructure services business seem to be acknowledged but still broadly underappreciated. Meanwhile, the market seems to be largely overlooking the transformative impact that AI and robotics will have on margins for its e-commerce business. With Amazon positioned to benefit from powerful tech trends, the stock looks like a smart buy while it’s still a market laggard.

Jennifer Saibil has positions in Apple. Keith Noonan has no position in any of the stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool has positions in and recommends Amazon, Apple, and Berkshire Hathaway. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

Apple’s next MacBook Pro models will enter mass production soon, according to the latest information shared by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

Apple MacBook Pro M4 hero
In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said he continues to believe the new MacBook Pro models will be released at some point between late 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, meaning they should be available to order by March at the latest.

Apple often releases new Macs in October, but both Gurman and Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said the next MacBook Pro models might not arrive until early 2026. Apple announced the MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in January 2023, so there is precedent for such a timeframe.

The next 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro are expected to be powered by M5/M5 Pro/M5 Max chips, but no other major changes have been rumored so far.

In late 2026, the MacBook Pro is expected to receive four bigger upgrades, including an OLED display for improved contrast ratio, a touch screen, a thinner design, and M6/M6 Pro/M6 Max chips fabricated with TSMC’s latest 2nm process.

It has also been rumored that Apple might add cellular connectivity to Macs, so perhaps the MacBook Pro models with an OLED display will be equipped with a similar custom-designed modem as the C1 chip in the iPhone 16e or C1X chip in the iPhone Air. Plus, the notch surrounding the front camera might get smaller on the OLED models.

Apple’s iPhone 17 models have been out for a week now, so we thought we’d do a longer-term review of the flagship iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max now that we’ve been able to spend more time with them.

MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera has a Silver ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ and a Cosmic Orange ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ Max, and despite a lot of concern over scratches and the state of ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ models in Apple Stores, they remain in pristine condition with caseless home use. iPhones may be scratching in stores, but that appears to be less common in daily use at this point.

Apple used Ceramic Shield 2 for the front of the ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ models, and made some big claims about its scratch resistance. So far, the ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌’s display is holding up. Dan’s been testing the display with keys, coins, and other common pocket items, but there isn’t a single scratch. With past iPhones, sticking a key in your pocket was a sure way to cause damage.

The display is supposed to have an anti-reflective layer, but it’s hard to notice a difference compared to the iPhone 16 Pro. It’s definitely a subtle change and not a major selling point.

Dan has already seen major improvements with the updated vapor chamber cooling system and aluminum frame for thermal management. Unlike the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro models, the ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ models barely get warm.

There’s been time for more substantial battery life testing a week in, and both the 17 Pro and Pro Max have impressive gains. The 17 Pro Max in particular can last for hours longer than the 16 Pro Max, but it’s definitely heavier and thicker than before.

The front camera is a major improvement in terms of quality, and selfies look much better than before. The option to take a wider-angle landscape selfie is great for group shots. As for the new Telephoto lens that supports up to 8x optical zoom, as long as you have solid lighting, your 8x shots will look great. Low-light performance isn’t as solid, but the 4x lens still performs well in poorer lighting.

If you’re still on the fence about upgrading from an older phone to one of the ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ models, it’s potentially worth it. The thermal changes make a huge difference, Apple’s claims about scratch resistance seem to be true, and battery life will be night and day. If you already have an ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌, let us know what you think of it in the comments below.

Apple Warns UK Risks Feature Delays Under Proposed Competition Rules http://livelaughlovedo.com/technology-and-gadgets/apple-warns-uk-risks-feature-delays-under-proposed-competition-rules/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/technology-and-gadgets/apple-warns-uk-risks-feature-delays-under-proposed-competition-rules/#respond Thu, 28 Aug 2025 09:28:48 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/28/apple-warns-uk-risks-feature-delays-under-proposed-competition-rules/ [ad_1]

Apple has warned that UK users could face delayed product features if the country’s regulators proceed with “EU-style rules” that seek to make it easier for smaller firms to compete with big tech companies.

app store blue banner uk fixed
Apple told the BBC that proposed regulations from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) “are bad for users and bad for developers,” and pointed to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which it says has already caused feature delays for European users, as evidence of regulatory overreach.

Apple Intelligence, which was announced at WWDC 2024, was initially scheduled to launch globally in September 2024, but it was withheld from EU users that year while Apple figured out how to make the new functionality compatible with the DMA’s rules. Apple Intelligence eventually launched in the EU in March 2025.

The warning comes as the CMA prepares its final decision on whether to force Apple and Google to open their mobile platforms. The regulator has already established that the companies control “around 90-100% of UK mobile devices,” creating an “effective duopoly.”

The proposed changes would require Apple to allow app developers to steer users toward alternative payment systems outside the App Store, undercutting Apple’s 30% commission model. The CMA also wants improved interoperability for digital wallets and smartwatches.

Apple argues these measures “undermine privacy and security protections” and force it to “give away technology for free to foreign competitors.” The company claims it has received over 100 data access requests from rivals under similar EU rules.

The CMA has already rejected Apple’s characterization, insisting that UK regulations differ from EU laws and instead focus on specific interoperability aspects rather than broad platform access. The regulator says its approach will help UK developers innovate without compromising security.

The CMA has until October to finalize its strategic market status designations. In the meantime, it has invited stakeholders to submit feedback on the proposed intervention roadmap.

Apple is still hard at work on becoming a relevant player in AI. The latest missive from Mark Gurman at suggests that Apple is shifting its artificial intelligence goals to center on new device segments. Sources reportedly told the publication that Apple has a slate of new smart home products in the works that could help pivot its lagging AI strategy.

The center of the new lineup is a tabletop AI companion that has been described as an iPad on a movable robotic arm. It would be able to swivel to face the screen toward a user as they move around their home or office. Sources said the current prototype uses a horizontal display that’s about seven inches while the motorized arm can move the screen about six inches away from the base in any direction. Equipped with a to the Siri voice assistant, this device could act like an additional person, recalling information, making suggestions and participating in conversations. According to Bloomberg, Apple is targeting a 2027 release for this product.

Apple’s new lineup is also rumored to include a smart home hub that is a simpler version of the robotic friend with no moving stand. We might be seeing this sooner, with a projected 2026 release for the device. This hub device would be able to control music playback, take notes, browse the web and host videoconferencing. Both the robot companion and the smart home hub are reportedly running a new operating system called Charismatic that’s designed to support multiple users. The Siri running on the device will be given a particularly cheery personality, and it may also be getting a visual representation. Bloomberg‘s sources said there hasn’t been a final decision on aesthetics; internal tests have had Siri looking like an animated Finder icon and like a Memoji.

Today’s scuttlebutt follows on previous reports from Gurman that pointed to Apple’s interest in these categories. The idea of a smart home hub was apparently floated at the company as far back as 2022, and it’s finally being to have a formal debut some time this year. Robots have also been a topic of interest in Cupertino for some time, with claims that Apple was developing a personal robot dating back . While this Bloomberg piece offers more detail about those hypothetical plans, there’s always a chance Apple will change direction or scrap a project.
