Slug Suggestion: donald-trump-slams-george-clooney-past-friendship-feud

By Riley Kane – Entertainment & Music Enthusiast

Picture this: It’s New Year’s Eve 2025, and as fireworks light up the sky, I’m cozied up in my Los Angeles den, spinning a classic vinyl from the soundtrack of an old George Clooney film while scrolling through Truth Social. Suddenly, a post from Donald Trump slams George Clooney, reigniting a feud that’s simmered for years after the actor details their past friendship in a recent interview. As a 29-year-old music journalist who’s chased concert road trips and binge-watched countless Hollywood dramas, moments like these remind me how entertainment and politics collide in the most unexpected ways. Trump, never one to hold back, mocked Clooney’s acting career, political predictions, and even his new French citizenship with wife Amal. Clooney’s quick-witted response? A cheeky agreement to “make America great again.” In this deep dive, we’ll unpack how Donald Trump slams George Clooney, tracing the roots of their once-cordial bond turned bitter rivalry, public reactions, and what it says about celebrity influence in 2026. Backed by insights from Variety and Daily Mail, this feud isn’t just tabloid fodder—it’s a snapshot of how personal histories fuel public spats, offering lessons in resilience and humor amid the spotlight.

The Spark: How Donald Trump Slams George Clooney on Truth Social

It all ignited on December 31, 2025, when Donald Trump took to Truth Social with a lengthy post slamming George Clooney. Labeling him one of the “worst political prognosticators of all time,” Trump criticized Clooney’s shift from supporting Joe Biden to Kamala Harris, even throwing in a jab at his “totally mediocre movies.” As reported by Variety, Trump’s rant tied into Clooney’s recent French citizenship, quipping that France’s immigration issues mirror those under Biden. In my late-night scrolls, I’ve seen how these posts go viral, amassing millions of views and sparking debates across platforms. This isn’t Trump’s first rodeo—he’s long used social media to call out critics, but slamming Clooney feels personal, given their shared history in New York’s social scene.

George Clooney Details Past Friendship: From Buddies to Bitter Rivals

Before the barbs, George Clooney details past friendship with Trump in a Variety interview, recalling how they crossed paths at clubs and restaurants in the pre-political era. Clooney described Trump as a “big goofball” who once helped him with a back surgeon recommendation, per The Independent. But as Trump entered politics, their dynamic soured—Clooney became a vocal Democrat supporter, even penning a 2024 New York Times op-ed urging Biden to step aside. This history adds layers to how Donald Trump slams George Clooney, turning a once-casual acquaintance into a public target. In my binge-watching of Clooney’s films like Ocean’s Eleven, it’s fascinating how his real-life persona mirrors the suave, principled characters he plays.

Clooney’s Witty Clapback: Agreeing to ‘Make America Great Again’

Not one to stay silent, George Clooney fired back swiftly, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again.” This cheeky response flips Trump’s slogan against him, showcasing Clooney’s trademark humor amid the feud. Daily Mail captured the exchange, noting how it escalated from citizenship jabs to broader political digs. As someone who’s followed Clooney’s activism, from Darfur advocacy to his work with wife Amal on human rights, this retort feels like a masterclass in graceful deflection.

The Citizenship Angle: Why Trump Targeted Clooney’s Move to France

Trump’s post celebrated George and Amal Clooney’s new French citizenship, tying it to France’s “major crime problem” from immigration—a jab echoing his own policies. As detailed in Us Weekly, this came shortly after Clooney’s interview reflecting on their friendship. The Clooneys’ decision, possibly for Amal’s work or family ties, became fodder for Trump’s narrative. In my entertainment dives, I’ve seen how stars like Clooney use dual citizenship for global mobility, but Trump’s spin turns it political, highlighting tensions between Hollywood liberals and conservative figures.

Public Reactions: Fans and Critics Weigh In on the Feud

Social media erupted as Donald Trump slams George Clooney, with X users dividing into camps. Some praised Trump’s unfiltered style, while others defended Clooney’s philanthropy, per Yahoo Entertainment. Comments ranged from “Clooney’s movies are iconic!” to memes mocking Trump’s film cameos. In my concert road trips, I’ve chatted with fans who see this as entertainment gold, boosting engagement for both. High-DA sites like Parade captured the buzz, noting how it distracts from weightier news.

History of Trump-Clooney Tensions: From Compliments to Criticisms

Their rift traces back to 2016, when Clooney called Trump a “xenophobic fascist” during his campaign. Trump retorted by labeling Clooney a “Hollywood phony.” AOL recounts how Clooney’s 2024 op-ed slamming Biden indirectly fueled Trump’s ire. Yet, pre-politics, they shared social circles, as Clooney details past friendship in interviews. This evolution from allies to adversaries mirrors broader Hollywood-Washington divides.

Clooney’s Political Stance: A Thorn in Trump’s Side

George Clooney’s Democratic leanings, from fundraising for Obama to criticizing Trump’s policies, make him a prime target. His 60 Minutes interview dismissing Trump’s barbs as irrelevant, per Mediaite, shows resilience. In my music journalism, I’ve covered how stars like Clooney use platforms for advocacy, influencing public opinion and drawing fire from opponents.

Amal Clooney’s Role: The Power Couple Dynamic in the Spotlight

Trump didn’t spare Amal, mocking her alongside George. As a renowned human rights lawyer, Amal’s work often intersects politics, per The Irish Times. Their dual citizenship highlights their global life, but Trump’s post frames it negatively. In family reflections, I admire how couples like the Clooneys navigate fame together, turning slights into unity.

What This Feud Means for Celebrity-Political Crossovers in 2026

As Donald Trump slams George Clooney, it underscores how stars’ opinions amplify political discourse. With 2026 midterms looming, such spats could influence voter sentiment. Rolling Stone explores how Hollywood’s left-leaning voice clashes with conservative narratives, making these feuds cultural touchstones.

Fan Theories and Memes: The Lighter Side of the Drama

The internet turned Trump’s rant into memes, from photoshopped Clooney in berets to quips about his “mediocre” films. Instagram comments captured the humor, with users joking about Clooney’s response. In my binge sessions, these viral moments make celebrity feuds entertaining, reminding us not to take it too seriously.

Looking Ahead: Will the Feud Escalate or Fizzle?

With Trump’s history of prolonged grudges, this could linger. Clooney’s laid-back style suggests he’ll brush it off, as in past exchanges. Facebook posts show fans hoping for reconciliation, but politics likely keeps the spark alive.

Podcaster Joe Rogan, one of the most influential voices in American media, sharply criticized President Donald Trump this week for what he described as a “dangerous precedent” — the administration’s deployment of military and federal forces in U.S. cities under the banner of restoring order.

On a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan repeated his previous point made in July, saying that using the National Guard and military-adjacent agencies to police domestic unrest represents a troubling shift in executive power. “The military in the street — I think that’s a dangerous precedent,” Rogan warned. “Once you cross that line, it’s hard to go back.”

(NOTE: The specific conversation begins at 2:18:08.)

Rogan’s rebuke marks a rare moment of direct criticism from the podcast host, who has at times defended Trump against what he called media bias. His comments come amid public backlash to the president’s expanded security actions, dubbed Operation Midway Blitz, which has seen armed federal presence in several major U.S. cities.

“The question,” Rogan concluded, “isn’t about right or left — it’s whether you want to live in a country where the government turns its power inward.”

Treasury mulls $1 Trump coin to celebrate America’s 250th birthday—and Trump http://livelaughlovedo.com/career-and-productivity/treasury-mulls-1-trump-coin-to-celebrate-americas-250th-birthday-and-trump/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/career-and-productivity/treasury-mulls-1-trump-coin-to-celebrate-americas-250th-birthday-and-trump/#respond Sun, 05 Oct 2025 03:00:05 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/10/05/treasury-mulls-1-trump-coin-to-celebrate-americas-250th-birthday-and-trump/ [ad_1]

The U.S. Treasury Department is considering a $1 commemorative coin bearing President Donald Trump’s likeness in honor of America’s 250th birthday—and to celebrate the president, too.

U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach shared a first draft of the coin on social media on Friday. The coin features Trump’s profile on one side, along with the words “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the dates 1776 and 2026.

The other side features the president raising his fist next to an American flag—a pose similar to the images of Trump raising his fist after an attempted assassination in July  2024. The words “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT,” which Trump had chanted to the crowd in that moment, also appear along the edge of that side of the coin.

“No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real,” Beach wrote in a social media post. “Looking forward to sharing more soon.”

Why is the U.S. minting a new $1 coin?

In preparation for the 250th anniversary of the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, Congress in 2020 authorized the U.S. Mint to issue new $1 coins in 2026 “with designs emblematic of the United States semiquincentennial.”

In 1976, when the U.S. celebrated 200 years since 1776, a $1 coin was minted featuring the Liberty Bell and the moon.

According to the U.S. Mint, the country’s commemorative coin program has raised more than $500 million in surcharges. That revenue goes to funding for federal museums, monuments, historical sites, and more.

The most recent commemorative coins, featuring abolitionist Harriet Tubman and the Greatest Generation, were issued in 2024. Fast Company has asked the Treasury Department for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

Trump coin could challenge precedent

Many former presidents, including most recently George H.W. Bush, have been featured on commemorative coins, but U.S. law forbids the Treasury from minting and issuing a coin displaying a “living former or current President.” The law, which dates to 1792, refers to coins created specifically to celebrate a president, however. Presidents may appear on such a coin only once two years have passed since their death, according to the law.

It is unclear how the law might apply in the case of a coin issued for another purpose, such as the 250th anniversary, Reuters noted.

A spokesperson for the Treasury told Fox Business that the draft is among other designs being considered. “While a final $1 dollar coin design has not yet been selected to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial, this first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles,” the spokesperson said.

Trump’s Quip About ‘Opinionated People’ Says A Lot http://livelaughlovedo.com/culture-and-society/trumps-quip-about-opinionated-people-says-a-lot/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/culture-and-society/trumps-quip-about-opinionated-people-says-a-lot/#respond Mon, 29 Sep 2025 20:16:24 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/09/30/trumps-quip-about-opinionated-people-says-a-lot/ [ad_1]

President Donald Trump made a rather offhand comment during his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House on Thursday — and experts believe it reveals a great deal about the president’s worldview.

Within minutes of the start of his press conference in the Oval Office with Erdogan, Trump heaped praise on the Turkish leader, calling him a “tough man” and “a guy who is highly opinionated.” Erdogan, who has been in power for over 20 years, has long been accused of undermining democracy, human rights and eroding media freedom and political expression.

Trump then went on to apparently reveal something somewhat introspective: He’s not quite sold on people with a lot of opinions.

“Usually I don’t like opinionated people, but I always liked this one,” he said, pointing to Erdogan. “But he’s a tough one. And he does an amazing job in his country.”

Trump’s admission that he doesn’t like opinionated people comes as many have been sounding the alarm on Trump’s efforts to target his political opponents, his crackdown on free speech and as voters have continued to criticize Republican elected officials for their loyalty — and at times fawning and gushing remarks — to Trump.

Experts have thoughts about Trump’s ‘opinionated people’ quip.

Todd Belt, professor and political management program director at The Graduate School of Political Management at The George Washington University, believes that Trump’s quip about not liking opinionated people on Thursday is reflective of his “broader worldview.”

“In Trump’s mind, an individual is only opinionated if they speak out against him,” he told HuffPost. “This, to Trump, is unfair, because objective reality (in his mind) is that he is the greatest president we have ever had and any criticism is unwarranted.”

“As such, fawning compliments, such as those we saw at his last Cabinet meeting, are not opinions, but merely statements of fact,” he continued.

Deepak Sarma, inaugural distinguished scholar in the public humanities at Case Western Reserve University, thinks Trump’s characterization of Erdogan as a “tough man” and as “highly opinionated” reveals how “he envisions himself and how he wished the world would view him.”

“Erdogan, [Vladmir] Putin, Kim Jong Un and other autocrats have long since served as aspirational models for Trump,” they said. “Trump usually does not like such people, and he surrounds himself with sycophants who ought to have no opinion of their own, unless, of course, it agrees with his.”

“Valuing loyalty above all else, Trump’s narcissistic leadership style requires echo chambers and an inner circle that serves to soothe his fragile ego,” they continued.

Sarma said that Trump’s characterization of Erdogan and his “opinionated people” remarks reveal his “Achilles’ heel.”

“Namely that he so desperately seeks to be taken seriously, to be recognized as a bully, that he can be easily manipulated by insincere praise (or gifts) by those seeking his audience,” they said.

President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan photographed in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington D.C., United States on September 25, 2025.

Dan P. McAdams, a professor of human development and social policy at Northwestern University, told HuffPost that, generally speaking, he doesn’t think “it pays dividends to parse what Donald Trump says in at any given time because he may say the exact opposite thing a short time later. ”

McAdams, author of “The Strange Case of Donald J. Trump: A Psychological Reckoning,” said that Trump lives “in the here-and-now moment, fighting to win the moment and to glorify the self in each moment, moment by moment, day by day.”

“The moments do not add up to make a plot line for his life, but instead each is like an isolated monad,” he said.

McAdams characterizes Trump as an “episodic man” — meaning he wakes up each day with “a fresh new consciousness ready to battle with whatever comes his way now.”

He doesn’t believe the president is ever thinking about the day prior in any given moment. Instead, he thinks Trump is focused on “winning the moment,” and that there’s no “continuity of mind” for him — or at least very little.

“The weirdest psychological thing about Donald Trump — and something that the American people have yet to come to terms with, including his supporters — is that he lives outside of time, with no understanding of the distant past and no concern for the distant future,” he said.

And as it relates to Trump’s recent remarks about not liking opinionated people, McAdams believes the president just doesn’t like opinionated people “when their opinions contradict his own.”

“But he is OK with opinionated people who agree with him on the basics, which probably characterizes Erdogan,” he said.

McAdams pointed out that Trump sandwiched his remarks about opinionated people in between saying, twice, that Erdogan is “tough.”

“Trump identifies with tough men. [He] tends to give them more leeway than those whom he sees to be weak,” he said. “As my Turkish friends say, Erodgan is ‘a little Trump.’ Trump likes little Trumps.”

WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 27: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) attends a Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee vote on the nomination of Lori Chavez-DeRemer as the next Secretary of Labor February 27, 2025 in Washington, DC. The committee approved the nomination of Chavez-DeRemer during the hearing.

United States Senator Bernie Sanders has never been the one to shy away from calling out Trump and his Republican Party for the occasional stunts they keep on pulling. This time, he is attacking the MAGA advocate for inciting hatred and pitting Americans against each other.

Since Trump’s return to power this year as the President of the United States, he has made several bad decisions, which have come at heavy prices. More recently, Trump has been propagating his hatred towards marginalised communities by partnering with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department (ICE). They have been dragging people out of their homes and workplaces and arresting them to be deported later. On the occasion of showing signs of resistance, the authorities are using brute force and knocking them down, causing emotional and physical pain. On a much deeper level, they are separating individuals from their families and the places they have called their home for several years.

The move has garnered severe negative criticism from people, including celebrities, who have spoken against Trump and his government’s efforts to rid America’s population of immigrants who have been a crucial part of their history. That said, his efforts have also found support among many, especially Republicans and right-leaning people.

As time passes, Trump has been doubling down on his immigrant crackdown by trying to get rid of any opposition. The latest to fall victim to the President’s ill intentions is Portland, Oregon, where he has promised to deploy troops and allow the use of “full force” to deal with the rising protests against ICE and immigration detention centres. As per a BBC article on September 28, 2025, Trump spoke of this in a Truth Social post where he alleged that the step would protect the ICE facilities “from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists.”

After the news became public, Bernie Sanders took to X to share his opinion. He questioned Trump’s move and called the decision anti-American. He also said:

“Mr. President: Read the Constitution. The function of the U.S. military is to protect us from FOREIGN enemies, not Portland, OR. In this country, we have local and state police for law enforcement, not federal troops.”

Trump calls Kirk ‘martyr’ as his wife forgives shooter http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/trump-calls-kirk-martyr-as-his-wife-forgives-shooter/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/trump-calls-kirk-martyr-as-his-wife-forgives-shooter/#respond Mon, 22 Sep 2025 08:09:44 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/09/22/trump-calls-kirk-martyr-as-his-wife-forgives-shooter/ [ad_1]

President Donald Trump proclaimed Charlie Kirk a “martyr for American freedom” in a memorial ceremony to commemorate the political activist as Erika Kirk said she forgave the man who gunned down her husband.

“On that day, this evangelist for American liberty became immortal,” Trump said Sunday before tens of thousands of mourners inside the State Farm stadium in Glendale, Arizona. “He’s a martyr now for American freedom.”

Trump described how Kirk would ask him to fly across the country to appear at his events with little notice.

“You never wanted to let Charlie down,” Trump said. “He worked so hard you just didn’t want to let him down.”

But Trump also angrily attacked liberals and pledged to continue investigations of groups he accused of fostering violence.

“He did not hate his opponents. He wanted the best for them,” he said. “That’s where I disagree with Charlie. I hate my opponent. And I don’t want the best for them.”

Trump also invoked one of his final exchanges with Kirk to support his long-threatened plan send in federal forces to crack down on crime in Chicago. “We’re going to have Charlie very much in mind when we go to Chicago,” he said.

“The depraved assassin” has been charged with Kirk’s killing, Trump said. “God willing he will receive the ultimate punishment.”

Moments earlier, Erika Kirk, vowed to continue her husband’s legacy, enrolling more campuses and students in the conservative movement he founded.

Kirk eulogized her husband in a tearful speech near the end of an hours-long memorial service for the conservative activist who was killed on Sept. 10. The service was heavily focused on Kirk’s Christian faith.

One of the most powerful moments came in Erika Kirk’s remarks, when she offered not a political message, but one of faith and forgiveness.

“I forgive him,” she said of the man who killed her husband. “I forgive him because it was what Christ did and it’s what Charlie would do.”

Throughout the service, Vice President JD Vance and other cabinet members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, focused on Christianity and how their faith aligned with Kirk’s, a notable blending of government and religion.

Kirk, newly named the chief executive officer of Charlie Kirk-founded Turning Point USA, said she was committed to the same campus events and debate he used to galvanize young conservatives and challenge liberal orthodoxy.

“Everything that Turning Point USA built through Charlie’s vision and hard work, we will make ten times greater through the power of his memory,” she said.

Kirk, 31, was killed on Sept. 10 during a debate at a Utah university, leaving behind Erika, and two young children, as well as the Turning Point USA organization he founded. On Sunday, he was lionized as a Christian martyr and patriot committed to free expression and challenging liberal orthodoxy.

Supporters vowed Kirk’s legacy would continue — growing bolder in the wake of his death. Turning Point has reported thousands of inquiries from people interested in starting high school and college chapters.

Kirk rose from a teenage political activist to a conservative influencer and standard bearer for MAGA youth, his surge in popularity intertwined with Trump’s political fortunes. He founded Turning Point with the goal of fighting liberal ideology on college campuses and propelling conservatism, and it’s now one of the most powerful conservative lobbying networks in the country. Turning Point USA grossed nearly $85 million in revenue last year and had chapters on over 3,300 college and high school campuses, according to its 2024 tax filing.

Kirk was also a relentless champion of Trump — even through his 2020 election defeat, as he helped chart the president’s return to power and gave guidance on policies and appointees.

Kirk’s get-out-the-vote efforts last year helped Trump’s improved showing among young voters and helping him flip Arizona back to Republicans in 2024.

In the days since Kirk’s killing, Trump and top Republicans have criticized left-wing rhetoric for helping foment violence, and pressured the Walt Disney Co., the parent of ABC, to sideline comedian Jimmy Kimmel for making critical comments about Kirk. The administration has moved to target left-leaning groups with racketeering probes and the potential loss of their tax-exempt status.

Erika Kirk heralded the First Amendment as “the most human amendment. We are naturally talking beings. Naturally believing beings. And the First Amendment protects our right to do both.”

US Attorney Erik Siebert resigns, won’t prosecute Letitia James on flawed charges http://livelaughlovedo.com/culture-and-society/us-attorney-erik-siebert-resigns-wont-prosecute-letitia-james-on-flawed-charges/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/culture-and-society/us-attorney-erik-siebert-resigns-wont-prosecute-letitia-james-on-flawed-charges/#respond Sun, 21 Sep 2025 03:27:11 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/09/21/us-attorney-erik-siebert-resigns-wont-prosecute-letitia-james-on-flawed-charges/ [ad_1]

Erik Siebert, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, has resigned following pressure from President Donald Trump over his handling of an investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James. Siebert, nominated by Trump in May but not yet confirmed by the Senate, was overseeing a probe into allegations that James committed mortgage fraud by falsifying records to secure favorable loan terms. The investigation was prompted by claims from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte, who alleged James misrepresented her financial records.

President Trump publicly expressed dissatisfaction with Siebert’s performance, declaring, “He didn’t quit, I fired him!” He criticized Siebert for receiving support from Democratic Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner during his nomination, suggesting this indicated a lack of impartiality. Trump also faulted Siebert for reportedly declining to pursue criminal charges against James, despite the investigation’s findings, noting that the U.S. Attorney had concluded there was insufficient evidence to bring a case.

In his resignation email, Siebert thanked colleagues for their dedication and professionalism, emphasizing his commitment to justice. The Eastern District of Virginia declined further comment on the resignation. James has denied the allegations against her, calling the probe politically motivated and an attempt at retaliation for her civil fraud case against Trump, which seeks damages for alleged financial misconduct.

Legal and political analysts say the resignation raises concerns about the independence of the Justice Department and the potential for political interference in federal investigations. Critics argue that pressuring Siebert to pursue a case without sufficient evidence reflects a broader pattern of using government authority to target political opponents, highlighting the tension between law enforcement and political agendas in high-profile investigations.

Trump: Charlie Kirk has died after being shot at a Utah college event http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/trump-charlie-kirk-has-died-after-being-shot-at-a-utah-college-event/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/finance/trump-charlie-kirk-has-died-after-being-shot-at-a-utah-college-event/#respond Wed, 10 Sep 2025 22:32:18 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/09/11/trump-charlie-kirk-has-died-after-being-shot-at-a-utah-college-event/ [ad_1]

Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of President Donald Trump, died Wednesday after being shot at a college event, Trump said.

The co-founder and CEO of the youth organization Turning Point USA, the 31-year-old Kirk is the latest victim in a spasm of political violence across the United States.

Videos posted to social media from Utah Valley University show Kirk speaking into a handheld microphone while sitting under a white tent emblazoned with the slogans “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.” A single shot rings out and Kirk can be seen reaching up with his right hand as a large volume of blood gushes from the left side of his neck. Stunned spectators are heard gasping and screaming before people start to run away. The AP was able to confirm the videos were taken at Sorensen Center courtyard on the Utah Valley University campus.

“We are confirming that he was shot and we are praying for Charlie,” said Aubrey Laitsch, public relations manager for Turning Point USA.

A person who was taken into custody at Utah Valley University was not the suspect, according to a person familiar with the investigation who was not authorized to speak publicly. It was not clear if authorities were still searching the campus for a suspect.

Kirk was speaking at a debate hosted by his nonprofit political organization. Immediately before the shooting, Kirk was taking questions for an audience member about mass shootings and gun violence.

“Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?” an audience members asked. Kirk responded: “Too many.”

The questioner followed up: “Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?”

“Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk asked.

Then a single shot rang out.

The event had been met with divided opinions on campus. An online petition calling for university administrators to bar Kirk from appearing received nearly 1,000 signatures. The university issued a statement last week citing First Amendment rights and affirming its “commitment to free speech, intellectual inquiry, and constructive dialogue.”

Last week, Kirk posted on X images of news clips showing his visit to Utah colleges was sparking controversy. He wrote, “What’s going on in Utah?”

Officials react

Trump and a host of Republican and Democratic elected officials decried the shooting and offered prayers for Kirk on social media.

“We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The shooting comes amid a spike in political violence in the United States across all parts of the ideological spectrum. The attacks include the assassination of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband at their house in June, the firebombing of a Colorado parade to demand Hamas release hostages, and a fire set at the house of Pennsylvania’s governor, who is Jewish, in April. The most notorious of these events is the shooting of Trump during a campaign rally last year.

Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, a Republican who was at the event, said in an interview on Fox News Channel that he heard one shot and saw Kirk go back.

“It seemed like it was a close shot,” Chaffetz said, who seemed shaken as he spoke.

He said there was a light police presence at the event and Kirk had some security but not enough.

“Utah is one of the safest places on the planet,” he said. “And so we just don’t have these types of things.”

Turning Point was founded in suburban Chicago in 2012 by Kirk, then 18, and William Montgomery, a tea party activist, to proselytize on college campuses for low taxes and limited government. It was not an immediate success.

But Kirk’s zeal for confronting liberals in academia eventually won over an influential set of conservative financiers.

Despite early misgivings, Turning Point enthusiastically backed Trump after he clinched the GOP nomination in 2016. Kirk served as a personal aide to Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, during the general election campaign.

Soon, Kirk was a regular presence on cable TV, where he leaned into the culture wars and heaped praise on the then-president. Trump and his son were equally effusive and often spoke at Turning Point conferences.
