Heya, friend! Happy late Father’s Day to ya! Hope you had a great one. Except for a brief drive out to visit the fam in the East Bay, we stayed around the house. But it was fun. Lots of high-intensity lounging, TV watching and chillaxin’…

Rosie, purr usual, spent the day working on her science experiments.

That reminds me…

Tabs wasn’t particularly interested in science or genetics like Rosie is, but he was interested in acting as a father figure to at-risk kittens and a mentor to up-and-coming kitty supermodels.

Despite his busy schedule, he always made time for the kittens in his foundation. He would read to them, do homework with them, teach them how to strut and strike poses on the catwalk — all the basic life skills.

Rosie

Rosie’s view of Father’s Day is a little different. As an introverted, more science-minded cat, she’s more interested in the genetic aspects of parentage. She was recently tapped by Genentech to lead a study into inherited traits that get passed along from father cat to kitten, so she’s been working on that all week long.

She has a theory that vertical leaping ability is closely tied to torbie fur pattern… Why Genentech is interested in that, I have no idea. 🤷‍♀️

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Finding Fatherhood All Around Me: A Father’s Day Reflection http://livelaughlovedo.com/finding-fatherhood-all-around-me-a-fathers-day-reflection/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/finding-fatherhood-all-around-me-a-fathers-day-reflection/#respond Wed, 18 Jun 2025 07:41:06 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/06/18/finding-fatherhood-all-around-me-a-fathers-day-reflection/ [ad_1]

Father’s Day always leads me to reflect on the tapestry of father figures who shaped my life. While my biological father is still with us today, his journey and ours as a family took an unexpected turn when I was eight years old.

The Father I Knew Before

Before his health crisis, my father was dynamic and ambitious, rising quickly through corporate ranks. Like many career-focused fathers of his generation, he had limited time for his children. This wasn’t unusual. His own father had been emotionally distant with a short temper. I accepted this as normal, never questioning the relationship we had.

Then everything changed. A congenital aneurysm led to a brain operation where my father nearly died. The surgeon later told us he’d held my father’s brain in his hands while placing a silver clip on the affected artery. When my father finally returned home months later, he looked the same but was fundamentally different. The ambitious executive was gone, replaced by someone who struggled to maintain employment and retreated into solitary translation work.

The Gottman Lens: Understanding Emotional Absence

Dr. John Gottman’s research shows that emotional attunement and connection between parents and children are critical for healthy development. When a parent is physically present but emotionally disconnected, what Gottman might describe as an “emotionally absent” parent, children often seek that emotional connection elsewhere.

This perfectly describes my childhood after my father’s operation. While physically present in our home, my father was emotionally unavailable. My mother, now the primary breadwinner, was physically absent for long hours. This fundamental shift upended our family’s emotional ecosystem.

Father Figures

What saved me was what Gottman might call my “emotional community,” the network of caring adults who collectively provided the guidance, support, and modeling I needed. The neighborhood literally raised us:

A neighbor who would correct us when we misbehaved outdoors, offering the boundaries I craved.

A friend’s father who greeted me with bear hugs, showing me physical affection I rarely experienced at home. His warmth taught me that men could be openly affectionate.

A Nobel laureate in economics who took me under his wing, introducing me to concepts that would later influence my career path. His intellectual guidance filled a crucial gap in my development.

One of my most profound childhood memories came when I was about seven years old, riding in the backseat of a friend’s car. I noticed something I’d never seen before: my friend’s parents were holding hands across the front seat. This simple gesture of affection between two adults completely blew my mind. My own parents were never touchy-feely, so witnessing this casual intimacy. This small but meaningful bid for connection left an impression that has stayed with me my entire life. I instantly knew this was something I would strive for in my own relationships.

These relationships weren’t mere substitutes. They were authentic connections that provided what Gottman calls “emotion coaching.” Each adult offered different pieces of the fatherhood puzzle: discipline, affection, intellectual guidance, and role modeling of healthy relationships.

Building Your Emotional Skill Set

Gottman’s research emphasizes that children need adults who validate their emotions and help them develop emotional intelligence. Through my patchwork of father figures, I received various forms of emotional education:

I learned the importance of physical touch and affirmation from my friend’s gregarious father. Every bear hug told me I mattered.

I gained intellectual curiosity and academic discipline from the economist. His patience with my questions showed me the value of mentorship.

I understood boundaries and consequences from neighbors who supervised our outdoor play. Their consistency created safety in my unpredictable world.

This diversity of influences gave me a broader emotional education than I might have received from a single father figure. Each relationship added new dimensions to my understanding of masculinity, responsibility, and care.

The Fathers We Become

Though I haven’t become a biological father myself, these collective influences formed a template for the kind of father I aspired to be: present, engaged, and emotionally available. Gottman’s research confirms that we often parent based on the models we observed, either replicating positive examples or deliberately choosing different paths from negative ones.

My experience taught me that fatherhood isn’t solely biological. It’s relational. The essence of being a father is showing up emotionally for children, providing guidance, and creating safe spaces for growth and learning. These are principles at the heart of Gottman’s approach to parenting.

Celebrating Fathers and Father Figures

As we celebrate fathers this year, I’m grateful not just for my biological father, who did the best he could with the challenges he faced, but for all the men who unknowingly shared the responsibility of guiding me to adulthood.

Gottman’s research reminds us that resilient children often find the emotional connections they need, whether through parents or other caring adults. My story isn’t one of deprivation but of abundance, finding father figures all around me when I needed them most.

This Father’s Day, I celebrate all who take on the sacred role of fatherhood, whether through biology or relationship. In Gottman terms, it’s not perfect parenting that children need, but authentic connection, and sometimes that connection comes from unexpected sources.

While recent research shows that many modern families feel increasingly isolated without the traditional “village” to help raise their children, my experience reminds us that communities of care still exist. We just might need to recognize them in new forms. Today’s children may face more structured, isolated lives than generations past, but the human need for multiple caring adults hasn’t changed.

Happy Father’s Day to all who nurture, guide, and support the next generation in whatever capacity you serve. Whether you’re a biological father, a neighbor who takes time to teach a skill, or a friend’s parent who offers a different model of relationship, you’re part of someone’s village. And in a world where connection sometimes feels harder to find, that village matters more than ever.

Not every dad wants the newest tech or a trendy subscription box. Some dads — and granddads, uncles, stepdads, godfathers, mentors — are just wired a little more classically. They like what they like. They value quality, practicality, and things that last. They may not say much, but they always show up.

This guide is for them.

From polished grooming essentials and grilling tools he’ll actually use, to timeless clothes and sentimental gifts that’ll hit him right in the feels, these are all ideas we’d give the classic dads in our own lives. Whether he raised you on Saturday morning pancakes or taught you to check your oil, we think he deserves something good this Father’s Day.

And if your guy is more of a cold-plunge-before-coffee, minimalist-desk kind of dad? We’ve got something for him too in our Father’s Day Gift Guide (Part 2 – Modern Dads).

I make this broccoli salad recipe for my family’s Father’s Day cookout every year. It’s a Love & Lemons reader favorite—it has over 400 5-star reviews!

Broccoli salad

On Mother’s Day, we make brunch. On Father’s Day, we grill!

That’s how it is in my family, anyway. While we might sit down to a frittata or Dutch baby on Mother’s Day morning, by the time Father’s Day rolls around, the weather is wayyyyy too nice for an indoor meal.

So my family gets together in the late afternoon for a cookout. My brother-in-law Josh is in charge of the mains (thanks, Josh!), and I’m on side dish duty.

I like to change up the menu from year to year, but there’s one recipe that I make every single time: my easy broccoli salad.

Here’s why I love this broccoli salad recipe:

  • It gets better if you make it ahead. I don’t know about you, but I LOVE a cookout side dish that I can make in advance. This one actually improves as it sits, as the raw broccoli softens and soaks up flavor from the dressing. I often make it one to two days ahead and store it in the fridge until I’m ready to serve.
  • The mix of textures and flavors is delicious. Traditional Midwest broccoli salad is made with bacon. In this recipe, I replace it with smoky roasted almonds and pepitas. They add nutty crunch and savory flavor to the salad, which creates a delicious contrast with the creamy dressing and chewy dried cranberries.
  • It’s an easy way to eat a lot of broccoli. Raw broccoli isn’t everyone’s favorite, but this recipe makes it feel fresh and fun. With the flavorful dressing and toppings, my whole family keeps going back for more!

If you’re looking for a make-ahead side dish for Father’s Day or any cookout this summer, you can’t go wrong with this broccoli salad recipe.

It’s one of my favorites, and our readers love it too. It has over 400 5-star reviews!

Want to make this salad? Here are a few tips:

  • Cut the broccoli into small pieces. The broccoli in this salad is raw. If the pieces are too large, they won’t soften in the dressing. For the best texture, cut the broccoli into small florets that will absorb the dressing.
  • Store the nuts separately. The crunchy roasted nuts are SUCH a tasty part of this salad. You can make them ahead at the same time you make the salad, but you should store them in a separate container at room temperature until just before serving. If you add them too early, they’ll lose their crunch.

10 Trans Guy-Approved Dads To Thirst Over This Father’s Day http://livelaughlovedo.com/10-trans-guy-approved-dads-to-thirst-over-this-fathers-day/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/10-trans-guy-approved-dads-to-thirst-over-this-fathers-day/#respond Sat, 14 Jun 2025 18:23:30 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/06/14/10-trans-guy-approved-dads-to-thirst-over-this-fathers-day/ [ad_1]

As a bisexual trans guy who really wants to be a dad and who has a really great dad myself, I have a lot of opinions about hot fathers. We’ve seen the lists of Pixar Dads We Want to Suck and Fuck (I’m looking at you, dad from Inside Out!) but I’m here to tell you about real, human fathers that I have deemed safe to thirst over this Father’s Day.

You’ll notice there are many men-who-are-famously-dads missing from this list, because this is not a list of famous men who are dads. No, this is a list of certifiably hot men who love being fathers and have respectable politics. They’re also men who I may look to for inspiration one day, if and when I become a father. They’re not perfect by any means, but they reflect a lot of the values and physical attributes that I like to see in a father.

If I have not listed your favorite hot dad, please, by all means, add them to the comment section and make sure to link their Instagram (for research).

Frank Alvarez

Frank co-hosts the Basement Yard podcast with Joe Santigato, which has become one of my favorite “boy discoveries” in transition. Best friends since grade school, both of these guys are great examples of healthy masculinity and are truly so funny. But Frank is a father of three and, as it appears to me, is a kick ass dad. He’s also a huge Wife Guy! And hot!

Dwyane Wade

Forget about his talent on the court and how sexy he is — Dwyane Wade is an exemplary father to his trans daughter, Zaya Wade. He has not only been incredibly vocal about his support of trans kids, but he has also put his money where his mouth is with the organization he founded with Zaya, Translatable.

Jason Ritter

Jason Ritter, or perhaps more commonly known to this audience as Melanie Lynskey’s husband, is a silly, goofy father with a heart of gold. He’s a sober king who loves to have fun and isn’t afraid to look the fool. Plus, that mustache!!!

Marlon Wayans

To be fair, all of the Wayans men are FINE, but I have to give a special shoutout to Marlon, who has a lesbian sister and trans kid. He’s incredibly supportive of both family members and the community at large. Sure, he sometimes takes it a tiny bit too far, but he’s a comedian, so it’s to be expected.

Dave Bautista

I’m going to go ahead and say it: I love Dave Bautista. I have never watched WWE, but I can respect what a legend he was in that sport. What I’m more interested in is Bautista’s venture into comedic acting and, more specifically, how great he is at it! Bautista is a stand up guy and father to three, and you can tell he’s got his shit together — perhaps because he was raised by a lesbian. And, ahem, muscles?!

Jesse Sullivan

Listen, we can all have our opinions about parenting-influencers and child-naming conventions, but two things are for certain: Jesse Sullivan loves the shit out of his kids, and he is insanely hot.

Mike Birbiglia

HEAR ME OUT, PEOPLE! When I think of Mike Birbiglia, I think of Dad Energy. He’s soft yet cool and is just one of those guys who you really want to like you. His kid inspires a lot of his comedy, but not in a “I hate my nagging wife and annoying kids” kind of way.

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce, The Boss, the guy every member of your family has a crush on, not only including but especially your father, has only made himself even more hot by beefing with Trump while performing in Berlin. I’ve always been a Springsteen fan, ever since my dad would take me to his concerts where he’d put me on his shoulders. I figured it was a New York/New Jersey thing. But as I get older and as I gain more gay and transmasc friends, I’ve learned Springsteen is for everyone! Plus, he’s very transparent about his own challenging relationship with his father and how therapy helped him prepare himself for fatherhood. That’s hot!

Idris Elba

Idris Elba is who my mom wishes my father was (just kidding!). I know none of us need any more reason or permission to thirst over Idris Elba, but he is yet another celebrity who speaks very openly and honestly about his relationship with his father and with his children.

Kieran Culkin

The man wears a wrist full of friendship bracelets his daughter made, for Christ’s sake. He is so dad-coded that during his acceptance speech for best supporting actor at this year’s Oscars, he asked his wife to have more kids. Sure, some people thought this was a weird move and wouldn’t want it to happen to them, but if his wife isn’t offended, then neither am I.

10 Ways to Celebrate Dad (Without Reinforcing Stereotypes) http://livelaughlovedo.com/10-ways-to-celebrate-dad-without-reinforcing-stereotypes/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/10-ways-to-celebrate-dad-without-reinforcing-stereotypes/#respond Sat, 14 Jun 2025 03:19:12 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/06/14/10-ways-to-celebrate-dad-without-reinforcing-stereotypes/ [ad_1]

Father’s Day has a way of sneaking up on people. It often arrives with less fanfare than Mother’s Day—fewer flowers, fewer school crafts, maybe a few more grills and ties. And while most dads will say they don’t mind, that doesn’t mean they’re immune to feeling unseen.

This list isn’t about fancy breakfasts or backyard gadgets. It’s about connection. John Gottman’s research tells us that strong relationships are built not on grand gestures, but on small, intentional moments of turning toward one another. Father’s Day is one of those moments—a chance to notice, appreciate, and connect with the father figures in your life in ways that feel meaningful, not just obligatory.

10 ways to celebrate Dad

Here are ideas to truly celebrate Dad in a way that go deeper than the usual card and cookout.

1. Ask Him Something He’s Never Been Asked

Instead of the standard, “What do you want for Father’s Day?” try: “What kind of dad did you hope you’d be?” or “What’s something about fatherhood that surprised you?” These questions  can enhance your dad’s Love Map and your understanding of his inner world. Even dads who don’t usually emote will appreciate being seen in a new way.

2. Celebrate the Mistakes

Fatherhood is often mythologized as heroic, but real strength shows up in humility. If you’ve seen your dad own a mistake, apologize, or grow through failure…name it. Say, “I’ve always respected how you admitted when you were wrong.” It’s not about perfection, it’s about modeling repair. That’s worth celebrating.

3. Tell a Story About Him

Make a new ritual: Go around the dinner table and tell about “a time Dad showed up.” It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Maybe it’s when he taught you to change a tire. Or when he came to your game in the rain. Dr. Gottman’s research shows that stories and shared meaning deepen connection and reinforce a family’s emotional infrastructure.

4. Turn Toward His Bids (Even the Weird Ones)

When your dad starts explaining how to sharpen a lawnmower blade or raves about a documentary on train engines, don’t roll your eyes. Turn toward the bid. These small moments of engagement,  or what Gottman calls the “sliding door” moments, build trust and intimacy over time.

5. Let Him Be More Than a Role

Sometimes “Dad” becomes a job description rather than a relationship. Step back and see the whole person: his hopes, fears, quirks, desires. Compliment not just his parenting, but his presence, creativity, or quiet strength. Dads want to be known, not just needed.

6. Offer a Clean Repair

If there’s been tension or distance, consider offering a gentle repair. “I know we haven’t talked much lately, and I miss that.” Or, “I’m sorry for how I spoke to you last week—you didn’t deserve that.” Repair attempts are one of the strongest predictors of relational health. Don’t wait for perfect timing…just start.

7. Name the Invisible Labor

Not all of a dad’s efforts are visible. Maybe he’s the one who checks the locks at night, who quietly absorbs stress so others don’t have to. Maybe he sacrifices spontaneity to provide security. Noticing these quiet forms of care is a way of saying, “I see you.”

8. Invite Him to Teach You Something

Dads often feel most connected when they’re invited to contribute and to share knowledge or pass on a skill. Ask him to teach you something, even if you already know how. It’s not about the lesson…it’s about the shared experience, the transfer of meaning, and the opportunity to connect shoulder-to-shoulder.

9. Ask About His Hopes

We often ask dads about the past. Try asking about the future: “What are you looking forward to this year?” or “What’s something you still want to do?” These questions treat him as someone who is still becoming, not just someone whose story has already been told.

10. End the Day With a Toast

Seriously. Make a toast. It doesn’t have to be formal or fancy. Just a few words that say, “We see you. We appreciate you. We love who you are, and who you’re becoming.” Every dad deserves to be honored with words that carry weight, not just because he earned them, but because he matters.

Final Thoughts

Father’s Day doesn’t need to be loud. It doesn’t require expensive gifts or elaborate plans. But it does offer a rare chance to reflect on what it means to be – and to love – a dad. Whether you grew up with a father who was present, distant, flawed, nurturing, or some complicated mix of them all, cherish the opportunity to connect.

Say the thing. Tell the story. Make the toast. These are the gestures that don’t just celebrate fathers…they strengthen families.

What makes a recipe a Father’s Day recipe? According to a quick internet search, it’s meat, meat, and more meat—preferably grilled. That’s fine and dandy, but some dads may want a little more variety. To find out what Serious Eats staffers are cooking up for Father’s Day, I recently polled the staff on their dad’s favorite meals. While the results were mostly meaty, there were also plenty of comforting carbs and desserts. Below, you’ll find all the dishes our staffers plan on making for their dads this Father’s Day, including tender ribs, cheesy lasagna, and a luxuriously rich New York cheesecake.
