Halsey debuted a new pitch-black hair color, and while it’s in the same cheekbone bob and baby bangs silhouette they’ve been seen in recently, it’s not crazy to think it might be a wig for the sake of a more traditionally formal look to go with the film festival’s fancy vibes. But we suspect it might actually be a stunning dye job.

When Halsey was spotted again arriving at the Hotel Excelsior on September 1 in a satiny, taupe, off-the-shoulder gown, the previously flipped-out ends were smoothed under. And a very close look at Halsey’s hairline seems to reveal that her hair is definitely dyed.

Halsey wore the Amelie-esque look again at the premiere of The Smashing Machine, where she wore a sheer, yellow halter gown. While on the red carpet, Halsey was even seen interacting with a blue-haired fan, who we can only hope isn’t too bummed that she didn’t match with the star.

Naturally I’m a cool-toned brunette but my hair is quite light — and it can be dull, too. I’ve always chased golden or honeyed tones as well as dimension in my hair. Serena van der Woodsen’s iconic, sun-kissed lengths on Gossip Girl were my gold standard, leading to years of blonde highlights and balayage (plus one brief flirtation with liquid brunette). But after years of bleaching, I’ve found myself craving shine, depth and health without losing the warmth and those light-reflecting strands I love so much. When I spotted the Mocha Mousse trend, it felt like the perfect, non-intimidating way to transition back to my roots (pun intended) while keeping the warm tones and brightness intact.

A few weeks ago, Halsey revealed that they dyed their hair a vibrant shade of turquoise, which instantly drew fan comparisons to the many times over the last decade that the singer-songwriter has donned blue dye and wigs. It’s actually been a good, long while since she’s given us some Tumblr realness, so the reveal that this was a seemingly long-term commitment to a vivid color feels like it may be signaling a bigger shift away from all of the neutral, low-key looks we’ve been seeing from so many celebrity beauty icons in the last few years.

But even though the blue baby bangs and bob are a big break from current beauty norms, it seems Halsey may already be a little bored.

On Wednesday, August 20, they posted a selfie video to their Instagram Stories with a whimsical butterfly filter. Not a filter, however: the latest changes to her hair.

What was once decidedly a chin-length bob is now a cheekbone bob. In fact, it’s nearly a bowl cut, if not for the fact that she cut her baby bangs even shorter and a bit choppier than before.

But the biggest reveal comes when Halsey runs their fingers through their hair to show gradient layers of color underneath: The turquoise switches to emerald green and then highlighter yellow.
