Looking for the most romantic Maldives resorts? These private island hotels offer luxury, seclusion, and unforgettable experiences.

After nearly thirty hours of travel from Los Angeles, I stepped off the plane in Male and felt the weight of the journey melt into the thick, sun-drenched air of the Maldives.

Within minutes, I was whisked away to the seaplane terminal — and straight into paradise. The Sun Siyam lounge felt like a hidden sanctuary: fresh buffet spreads, complimentary head and neck massages that erased every trace of jet lag, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking seaplanes gliding across turquoise water. It wasn’t just a layover — it was the moment I realized this trip would completely redefine my idea of luxury.

From floating breakfasts served in private overwater villas to lazy afternoon swims in turquoise lagoons, I spent the next nine days exploring three of Sun Siyam’s breathtaking private islands: Vilu Reef, Iru Veli, and Iru Fushi.

Each one offered its own personality — from barefoot island romance to modern indulgence — yet they all shared a common thread: the warmth of genuine Maldivian hospitality that sets this 100% Maldivian-owned brand apart.

As someone who seeks out destinations that balance intimacy with sophistication, I was completely captivated by how each resort creates a world of its own — secluded and serene, yet alive with color, culture, and unforgettable experiences.

Here’s a closer look at what makes each of these resorts truly exceptional.

The Maldives’ Most Romantic Private Islands

Before exploring each property, it’s worth understanding Sun Siyam’s thoughtful approach to curating experiences. The company has organized its resorts into three distinct collections, each designed to match different travel styles and desires.

The Luxury Collection represents the pinnacle of indulgence, offering the most extensive amenities and dining options for couples who want it all. The Privé Collection focuses on intimate exclusivity, perfect for those seeking a more private retreat. The Lifestyle Collection brings vibrant energy and exceptional value, ideal for couples who want authentic Maldivian experiences with a contemporary twist.

What sets Sun Siyam apart isn’t just their range of offerings — it’s their commitment to being guardians of the Maldivian spirit. Throughout all three properties I visited, I noticed thoughtful touches that pay homage to local heritage, from traditional architecture elements to cultural celebration days.

This is a company that knows what you need before you even realize it yourself, whether that’s an umbrella appearing just as rain clouds gather or a bubble bath waiting in your villa after a spa treatment.

Sun Siyam Vilu Reef

My first stop was Sun Siyam Vilu Reef, a property that immediately captured my heart with its blend of established charm and exciting evolution. This resort has that lived-in warmth you can only find at a place that’s been perfecting hospitality for years, yet it’s simultaneously looking toward the future with major expansions underway.

Guests can choose between luxurious beach villas with private pools and direct sand access or overwater villas perched above the lagoon, offering stunning ocean views and the iconic experience of stepping straight from your villa into crystal-clear water. The resort is also adding fifty new overwater villas, expected to be completed by April 2026 — giving couples even more options for that iconic Maldivian escape.

What truly stood out, though, was their attention to personal comfort. Something I rarely see at a resort — a pillow menu. You can select everything from neck pillows to cotton, down, and even maternity options, ensuring every guest gets the exact kind of rest they need. It’s this thoughtful attention to detail that makes Vilu Reef feel both indulgent and effortlessly welcoming.

With five restaurants and two bars, Vilu Reef offers impressive variety for a resort of its size. Aqua serves buffet-style international cuisine, while The Spice has a clever dual personality — Italian by day, transforming into an Indian restaurant by night. Well Done, the beachfront seafood grill, became my favorite spot for sunset dining, where fresh catches are prepared to perfection with the sound of waves as your soundtrack.

For Couples: Don’t miss the special Maldivian breakfast and destination dining on the beach. Imagine a private table set on powder-soft sand with nothing but ocean horizon stretching before you. It’s these intimate moments that transform a vacation into a memory you’ll treasure forever.

Sun Siyam Iru Veli

Opened in 2018, Iru Veli represents Sun Siyam’s more contemporary vision, and it’s here that I truly understood what it means when they say they’re “always one step ahead.”

This is where Sun Siyam’s philosophy of knowing what guests need before they know it themselves really shines. After a relaxing treatment at the spa, I returned to my villa to find a bubble bath already drawn, adorned with floating flowers and fragrant petals. And every evening, I discovered a message spelled out in carefully arranged palm leaves on my bed.

These aren’t random acts of service; they’re the result of a team that genuinely cares about crafting moments of wonder.

Iru Veli celebrates Maldivian culture every Monday with special programming that gives couples a chance to connect with the islands’ rich heritage. From traditional music and dance to local culinary experiences, these cultural days offer a window into the soul of the Maldives that goes beyond the postcard-perfect beaches.

With four restaurants and a total of seven bars and dining venues, Iru Veli strikes a perfect balance between variety and intimacy.

For Couples: The crown jewel here is their floating cinema experience. Picture this: lounging on cushion on a private floating cinema, hand-in-hand with your partner, watching your favorite film under a canopy of stars. It’s romance elevated to an art form.

Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

Part of Sun Siyam’s prestigious Luxury Collection, Iru Fushi is where the company showcases its full capabilities. With fifteen restaurants and bars, this is the property for couples who want endless options.

What impressed me about Iru Fushi was how seamlessly it blends cutting-edge convenience with timeless hospitality. The resort has its own app that allows you to book everything from tennis and badminton courts to restaurant and excursion reservations. It’s the kind of thoughtful integration of technology that enhances rather than distracts from the experience.

As the luxury flagship, Iru Fushi offers a wide range of accommodation types. Whether you’re dreaming of an overwater villa with direct lagoon access, a beachfront retreat steps from pristine sand, or something even more exclusive, this property delivers options that cater to every vision of paradise.

The sheer variety here means you can craft an entirely personalized experience. Want to be active and social? The activities and multiple venues await. Prefer complete seclusion? The private villas and intimate dining experiences offer exactly that sanctuary.

For Couples: We adored our private lagoon lunch, seated at a table right in the water. The waves kissed our bare feet while we enjoyed a multi-course meal. It was a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

The Sun Siyam Difference: Sustainability Meets Luxury

Across all three properties, I was impressed with Sun Siyam’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The resorts have eliminated printed menus and guest documents, instead offering everything on iPads — a small change that significantly reduces waste. Their Sun Siyam Cares program goes beyond token gestures, with that commitment to plant-based menu options reflecting a genuine dedication to sustainable luxury.

This is eco-consciousness that doesn’t ask you to sacrifice comfort. Instead, it enhances the experience by connecting you more deeply to the pristine environment you’ve come to enjoy.

Essential Tips for Your Visit

Book Early: These properties, especially the most exclusive villas, can fill up quickly during peak season. Start planning at least six months ahead to secure your preferred dates and accommodations.

Embrace the Pace: One of the greatest gifts these islands offer is permission to slow down. Don’t try to do everything — choose the experiences that speak to you and leave space for spontaneous moments.

Pack Smart: Bring resort chic attire that’s comfortable in humidity, quality reef-safe sunscreen, and at least one elegant outfit for those special dining experiences. Don’t forget your underwater camera — you’ll want to capture the marine life.

In a world where luxury resorts can feel interchangeable, Sun Siyam has created something genuinely special. These aren’t just places to stay — they’re thoughtfully crafted sanctuaries where authentic Maldivian hospitality meets modern sophistication, where sustainability coexists with indulgence, and where couples can find their own perfect version of paradise.

From that first moment in the seaplane lounge to the last sunset viewed from an overwater villa, every detail reinforced what makes these properties extraordinary: they understand that true luxury isn’t about opulence for its own sake. It’s about anticipating needs before they arise, creating spaces for genuine connection, and honoring both the destination and the guests who come to experience it.

The Maldives has always been synonymous with romance, but Sun Siyam has elevated it to an art form. And the best part? Unlike some secrets, this is one worth sharing.

20 Best Hotels in Tulum, From Luxury Resorts to Beach Bungalows http://livelaughlovedo.com/20-best-hotels-in-tulum-from-luxury-resorts-to-beach-bungalows/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/20-best-hotels-in-tulum-from-luxury-resorts-to-beach-bungalows/#respond Mon, 25 Aug 2025 04:14:25 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/25/20-best-hotels-in-tulum-from-luxury-resorts-to-beach-bungalows/ [ad_1]

Tulum may have started as a sleepy fishing village with a few rustic cabanas along its shore, but today it has evolved into one of the Riviera Maya’s hottest destinations. People of all ages travel to this jungle-nestled region south of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, drawn to the holistic lifestyle that makes it famous and the many gorgeous properties available for visitors. The hotel scene here is a collection of barefoot-luxe bungalows that open directly onto the sand, and wellness retreats where sunrise yoga comes with sea views. While several large luxury hotels have opened in the area—such as Conrad Tulum, with its lavish amenities of 5 pools and 11 on-site restaurants—there are still plenty of properties that offer what Tulum was originally known for: diminutive, boutique respites. Just look at Chablé, a 10-suite retreat at the end of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and the new Xela Tulum, a 12-room oasis with an open-air living room and expansive rooftop ideal for sunset cocktails.

Over the years, I’ve watched this area transform into a design-forward playground that seamlessly blends its architecture into the surrounding jungle, and it’s a sight you’ve got to see. The good news? This stretch of Mexico’s Caribbean coast is now easier to reach than ever, thanks to the new Tulum International Airport, with direct flights from US cities like Miami, Atlanta, and Dallas-Fort Worth. So, whether you’re craving a luxury-focused stay, an all-inclusive resort, or an affordable boutique property where wellness is built into the experience, Tulum delivers—framed by white-sand beaches, lush foliage, and an irresistible coastal energy that is nothing like its northern neighbors.

Ready to experience Tulum’s magic for yourself? Here are the best hotels in Tulum worth checking into.

Every hotel review on this list has been written by a Condé Nast Traveler journalist who knows the destination. The perfect vegan vacation in Langkawi http://livelaughlovedo.com/the-perfect-vegan-vacation-in-langkawi/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/the-perfect-vegan-vacation-in-langkawi/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 09:20:31 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/12/the-perfect-vegan-vacation-in-langkawi/ [ad_1]

Langkawi is the Malaysian holiday island that continues to call us back. We’ve been lucky enough to visit many times, staying in everything from luxury hotels to boutique hideaways and budget friendly guesthouses. There’s so much to love, past trips have seen us explore the island on a motorbike, chasing hidden beaches, soaking up breathtaking views, and always on the lookout for a fresh coconut, an oat milk latte, or something perfectly plant based for lunch. But this trip was different. This time, our only goal was to slow down, unwind, and savour a carefully curated vegan staycation, choosing a vegan friendly luxury resort that felt like home and restaurants that proudly fly the vegan flag.

Stay at Ambong Pool Villas

By choosing to stay at Ambong Pool Villas, we gifted ourselves a peaceful escape that felt both indulgent and deeply restorative. From the moment we arrived, the friendly team made us feel like family, offering the kind of warm hospitality that turns a hotel stay into something truly memorable.

Our villa, Kuang, came with a private pool that was not only huge but boasted the most incredible views over the jungle canopy and distant sea. We spotted dusky leaf monkeys, macaques, hornbills and black giant squirrels foraging in the surrounding trees, a reminder that we were sharing this tranquil retreat with the island’s native wildlife. Waking up to nature and dipping into our pool before vegan breakfast quickly became the perfect way to start each day.

Dine at Pegaga

Dining at Pegaga is a must when visiting Langkawi, this 100% vegan restaurant is nestled within Ambong Rainforest Retreat but welcomes guests from both resorts and the public too. We discovered it on a previous trip when searching for the best vegan options on the island and knew we had to return. This time, staying with Ambong away meant we could work our way through their creative menu at leisure. One of our dining highlights was surprisingly simple: hummus and falafels. The hummus was wonderfully creamy, topped with lightly fried falafels full of flavour, and sautéed peppers and onions that brought the whole dish together. The smoothie bowls offered a healthy start to the day, vibrant and nourishing. But we couldn’t resist the indulgent side of the menu either, the vegan carrot cake and French toast (served with homemade coconut ice cream) were utterly delicious.

The true standouts, though, were the veganised versions of classic Malay dishes. The jungle laksa was hearty and comforting, while the masak lemak combined rich coconut flavours with herbs picked from the onsite garden. The nasi lemak was so good we had it twice, a bold and beautifully balanced plate of sambal, rice, curry, and tempeh. The congee was another favourite, far surpassing other vegan versions we’ve tried elsewhere. Clearly, the menu at Pegaga has been developed with thought, creativity, and respect for traditional Malaysian flavours, all while keeping it plant based.

Stay at Ambong Rainforest Retreat

Consider Ambong Rainforest Retreat for your vegan vacation in Langkawi if you’re looking to disconnect and recharge in a truly special setting. This private estate, with only 11 suites, studios and cottages, offers a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by towering jungle trees and the sounds of nature. The shared pool is a refreshing oasis in itself, perfect for a post breakfast swim or simply to relax under the jungle canopy.

What makes this place truly special is the combination of adult only tranquillity, a fully vegan restaurant onsite, and a wellness programme that includes daily morning yoga with Ms Sugu and restorative treatments at Amaala Spa. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and breathe deeply, an ideal escape from the noise of everyday life.

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2025

Dine at The Fat Frog

Dine at The Fat Frog to enjoy their ”healthy and earthy dining in a stunning setting” including some of the most delicious vegan desserts we’ve ever had. Located about 15 minutes away from Ambong by taxi, this vegetarian restaurant offers sweeping views over a golf course and the lush surrounding hills.

We started our visit with drinks and snacks on the sunset terrace, a peaceful spot that set the tone for a memorable meal. From the remarkable vegan rendang to the wholesome falafel bowl and the rich spaghetti with homemade vegan meatballs, every dish was full of flavour and flair. But the desserts really stole the show. The key lime pie and pecan slice, both served with coconut ice cream, were so good we were already planning our return to eat them again before we’d even finished.

We loved our perfect vegan vacation in Langkawi. Feeling blessed to be based just a short flight away from this tropical paradise, we know we’ll be back again soon. This visit might be hard to beat though, the combination of luxurious stays, inspiring jungle surroundings, kind hearted people and mouthwatering vegan food has set a new standard for future holidays. Whether you’re vegan, plant curious, or simply love good food and peaceful places, Langkawi is most certainly a destination that delivers.

Hotels We Love: Vidanta Riviera Maya Review http://livelaughlovedo.com/hotels-we-love-vidanta-riviera-maya-review/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/hotels-we-love-vidanta-riviera-maya-review/#respond Wed, 06 Aug 2025 09:37:35 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/06/hotels-we-love-vidanta-riviera-maya-review/ [ad_1]

Savvy travelers have been slipping away to Vidanta Riviera Maya for years — drawn by its jungle-lined paths, peaceful luxury, and a sense of play you don’t always find at polished resorts. Between the lush boutique water park, Jungala Aqua Experience, and JOYÀ — Cirque du Soleil’s only permanent show in Mexico, complete with a multi-course dinner — the experience here goes beyond your typical beach escape.

I was lucky enough to spend a few days at Vidanta and was truly blown away, not just by the luxury, location and service, but the fun and whimsy that you don’t often find at a resort of this size and caliber. Whether I was floating past waterfalls on the lazy river, lounging at an upscale beach club, or getting dressed up for a night of aerial acrobatics and champagne, Vidanta struck a rare balance: relaxed but refined, imaginative but grounded, and a place I can’t wait to return to.

WHY IT’S AWESOME:

Emily Hart

Vidanta Riviera Maya is the ultimate fusion of luxury, culture, and adventure. With pristine beaches, world-class dining, and access to incredible experiences like the Cirque du Soleil Joya show, this resort is the definition of paradise. Perfect for both relaxation and exploration, it’s ideal for families, couples, or solo travelers looking for a truly immersive experience.

With six separate hotels on property, over 15 bars and restaurants, on over 1000 acres of pristine paradise – this property doesn’t feel like your traditional Mexican resort getaway. With luxe touches, celebrity guests, and incredible beaches, this is truly a resort for those in the know.

IN-HOUSE FOOD AND DRINK:

Emily Hart

Dining at Vidanta Riviera Maya is anything but boring. From tacos and margaritas under swaying palms to sushi, steaks, and indulgent in-room dining, there’s something for every craving—and then some. You can snack barefoot at a beach shack, dress up for a night out near the JOYÀ theater, or wander the Salum Market for sunset cocktails and casual bites. With bold flavors, playful vibes, and more variety than you’d expect from one resort, eating here is half the fun.

Here were some of my favorites:

Gong

Emily Hart

Dinner at Gong was hands down my favorite meal at Vidanta Riviera Maya. The space is sleek and serene, with warm wood accents, glowing lanterns, and an atmosphere that feels both elevated and inviting. The menu blends flavors from across Asia, and every dish I tried—from the fresh, delicate sushi to the rich, flavorful filet—was perfectly executed. I sipped a beautifully balanced cocktail while soaking in the calm, almost transportive vibe of the restaurant. It felt like stepping into another world for the evening—refined, peaceful, and completely memorable. If you’re only splurging on one dinner while you’re here, make it this one.

La Cantina

Emily Hart

La Cantina at Vidanta Riviera Maya, set within the vibrant Salum Market and Beachside Eateries, brings classic Mexican comfort food to life in a modern yet deeply rooted setting. The colorful ceramic tiles and polished wood details create an inviting atmosphere that honors tradition without feeling dated. I savored fresh, creamy guacamole, a tasing menu of Mexican favorites, alongside expertly made margaritas—simple but elevated flavors that lingered long after the last sip. It’s the kind of place that feels like a celebration of Mexico’s rich culinary soul, making it one of my favorite spots on the property.

Quinto

Emily Hart

Breakfast at Quinto was the kind of buffet that makes you want to try everything—twice. Set in a beautiful two-story space with sweeping ocean views, it offered an almost overwhelming spread: tropical fruit, fresh pastries, chilaquiles, waffles, smoked salmon, made-to-order omelets, and more. I filled my plate, grabbed a cappuccino, and settled in by the window to watch the light shift over the water. The setting felt polished but relaxed, and the sheer variety made it easy to linger. It was one of those vacation breakfasts you actually remember.

BEST THINGS TO DO/EAT/DRINK WITHIN A 10-MINUTE WALK/SHUTTLE RIDE:

Jungala Aqua Experience

Emily Hart

Jungala Aqua Experience isn’t your average water park. With more adult touches, like cocktails, muted stylish colors, and gourmet food options, it is a must-visit for thrill-seekers or those who just want to spend a day in a lazy river with a drink. With water slides, the aforementioned lazy river (my favorite), and plenty of places to relax (pro tip: book a private cabana), it’s the perfect place to cool off and have fun.

Beach Club

Emily Hart

Spending an afternoon at the Vidanta Beach Club is the ultimate way to unwind in style. With beautiful pools, private cabanas, and direct beach access with stunning ocean views, it feels like your own little slice of paradise. The service is next-level attentive without being over the top—they make you feel like the only guest that matters. I loved sipping expertly made cocktails, especially the Aperol Spritz from the roaming cart that adds a fun, festive vibe. The fresh, flavorful food pairs perfectly with the ocean breeze. This exclusive spot is available to Grand Luxxe and Grand Bliss guests, making it a must for those seeking chill luxury.

BEST THING TO DO WITHIN A 20 MIN SHUTTLE RIDE:

JOYA Cirque de Soleil

Emily Hart

Seeing the JOYÀ dinner show at Vidanta Riviera Maya was one of the most exciting nights I’ve had in a long time. It’s Mexico’s first Cirque du Soleil resident dinner show—and the only permanent Cirque du Soleil show in the country until Ludo, a new water-themed production, debuts in November 2025 at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta. The theater’s cozy, immersive setting makes you feel like you’re part of the story from the moment the lights go down. The acrobatics and performances are absolutely breathtaking—full of energy, creativity, and moments that seriously wowed me.

The dinner was just as impressive as the show. The menu itself is part of the experience—with edible menus, dishes infused with smoke, and even a treasure box course that feels like uncovering a delicious secret. The plating is playful and full of surprises (but I don’t want to give away too much!). The flavors were spot-on, perfectly balanced, and paired seamlessly with the pacing of the show. It was a total sensory experience—great food, amazing entertainment, and a vibe that kept me smiling all night. Definitely a must if you’re visiting Vidanta.

BED GAME: 9/10

Emily Hart

The beds are ultra-comfortable with plush mattresses and high-quality linens that make sinking in after a day of exploring pure bliss. I loved opening the balcony doors to let in the fresh air and listen to the gentle sound of passing rain — it was the perfect way to unwind and fall asleep peacefully.

SEXINESS RATING: 9/10

Emily Hart

Vidanta’s modern design, chic atmosphere, and incredible service create a stylish and romantic vibe. Whether it’s a sunset dinner by the beach or a spa treatment, there’s no shortage of moments to make you feel like you’re in a luxurious, sexy escape.

VIEWS/PIC SPOTS:

Emily Hart

Vidanta Riviera Maya is packed with seriously Insta-worthy spots. Whether it’s the lush jungle paths, colorful gardens, or the sparkling pools, every corner feels like a photo op waiting to happen. The beach views of the turquoise Caribbean? Total postcard vibes. And the Salum Market area is full of bright, fun details that pop on camera. Honestly, whether you’re snapping sunrise from your balcony or chasing golden hour by the water, your feed is gonna thank you.

BEST SEASON TO VISIT:

Emily Hart

The best time to visit Riviera Maya is between November and April when the weather is warm and dry. This is the ideal time to enjoy the beach, the pools, and the outdoor activities without worrying about the humidity or rain that often hits in the summer months. Shoulder seasons will likely have less crowds, and I’d even recommend rainy season as rain on the jungle-like grounds is very cozy and often doesn’t last too long.

IF I HAD TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ONE THING:

The resort is enormous – which for most people is a plus – but it could feel a bit overwhelming for some travelers. It’s massive, and while the layout is stunning, getting from one area to another sometimes requires a bit of walking—or waiting for a shuttle. This could be a minor inconvenience if you’d rather have less movement during your stay.
