The sixth largest island in Greece, and the biggest in the Ionian, Kefalonia has the drama of Corfu’s cliffs, the charm of Ithaca’s myths, and just enough modernity to stay connected — if you choose to be. And, just outside Argostoli in the south, close to the top of a hill crowned by the ruins of St George’s Castle, lies a collection of villas built on the foundations of buildings ruined by the Great Kefalonia earthquake of 1953. Among them is Angel Pools Villa, a three-bedroomed villa run by Kefalonian Luxury Villas, where we stayed for a few days before chartering a yacht from the neighbouring island of Lefkada to the north.

The welcome

We arrived late — late enough that the horizon had long since swallowed the sun and the island had hushed into moonlight. But Angela, the property’s namesake guardian angel (and owner), was waiting at the gate. No fluster, no fuss — just a warm smile, interrupted only by the noise of chirping crickets, and the keys to a temporary kingdom.

Angela had very kindly arranged our taxi from the airport, making our arrival seamless – the kind of thoughtfulness matters more than any thread count ever could. No frantic GPS-pinning or wrong turns—just a smooth transition from the airport to this tranquil escape.

The property

Coolness is the villa’s first quiet gift. Kefalonian summers are hot-blooded affairs, but step inside and you’re embraced by still, cool air—thanks to thick stone walls (some nearly two feet deep) and quiet, efficient air conditioning.

The main space is open, stone-floored, and beautifully spare. A fireplace lounges in one corner, though in the Summer it’s more decorative than practical. We never touched the TV—preferring instead to eat out and enjoy each other’s company—but it’s there if you want it.

Just a few steps up is the dining area and kitchen: a triumph of tradition-meets-tech. Rustic ceiling beams and earthy tones frame Miele appliances, a DeLonghi coffee machine, integrated fridge-freezer, and every gadget from toaster to toasted sandwich maker. This is a kitchen that makes you want to cook, if it weren’t for three lovely tavernas within walking distance.

Angela explained that much of the villa was painstakingly rebuilt from the ruins of buildings lost in the 1953 earthquake that devastated much of Kefalonia.

Upstairs are three bedrooms—one double and two singles—each with its own en suite shower room. In fact, there’s no queueing for a post-exercise rinse as this property has no less than five showers despite being three bedrooms – with one tucked away just off the kitchen and another outside.

Korres citrus shampoo, conditioner, body gel and hand wash provide a gentle nod to Greek skincare, infusing the rooms with a fresh, herbal scent.

The facilities

Outside, the pool glistens beneath Kefalonian blue skies, flanked by sunbeds and seating areas that allow guests to unwind and almost seemingly discourage any form of productivity. There’s an outdoor shower, drying rack, and enough shade and sun to suit every inclination.

The soundtrack here is not curated on Spotify but gifted by nature: the occasional breeze through olive trees, a distant cockerel or the rhythmic chirping of insects are all that you’ll hear. If you’re looking for noise, nightlife or neon lights, this is not your place. But if you’re looking for peace and solitude, this villa delivers in spades.

The location

The villa is located in the hillside village of Kastro, around 8 kilometres from Argostoli and just steps from the hidden but pretty Greek Orthodox church of Agios Nikolaos, also lovingly restored by the owners of Kefalonian Luxury Villas.

Less than a kilometre away lies the Castle of Agios Georgios, a 16th-century Venetian relic that stands as both ruin and monument, guarding the region with crumbling grace. For just €5, you can stroll among the ramparts and soak in views that are among some of the best in Kefalonia.

Just outside the castle walls, Kastro Cafe – a local family-run spot adorned in flowers – offers hearty breakfasts and an even heartier hospitality.

Dinner options include Il Borgo, a classic taverna with Greek favourites done right, and Olive Lounge, an upscale escape with stunning panoramic views—book in advance and time it for sunset. All three are within easy walking distance of the villa.

A short taxi ride lands you in Argostoli, the island’s compact capital, where turtles gather by the fishing boats and the waterfront is ideal for a lazy wander or spontaneous gelato.

Other nice touches

Small details linger: a seasalt and rose diffuser from Moheda that scents the villa with calm; and tea, coffee and chilled bottled water were waiting on arrival. Perhaps not grand gestures but quiet ones that demonstrate care and attention which perhaps whisper louder than any luxury.

The cost

High season rates hover at around £370 per night, dipping to £270 in shoulder months. For a property of this calibre—with privacy, elegance, and enough space for a family or group of friends— and in this location, it feels entirely fair. Especially when you consider the priceless commodity it offers: peace.

The best bit

The best bit wasn’t the pool, though it was perfect. It wasn’t the view, though it stopped us in our tracks daily. It wasn’t even the villa itself, exquisite as it is. It was the feeling of solitude, peace and relaxation – an opportunity to forget about the hustle and bustle of daily life back home.

The final verdict

There’s something moving about staying in a home born of rubble and rebuilt with such grace. Angel Pools Villa stands as a magnificent example of thoughtful restoration, providing an unparalleled haven of tranquillity and comfort.
