I’m so excited to share my latest collection with Business & Pleasure— our second collaboration since first partnering two years ago. This release feels both fresh and familiar, carrying forward the signature sage green from our first launch while introducing navy stripes for a crisp, classic contrast. The new stripe was designed to sit beautifully with our best-selling floral print, which is also back in stock and ready to be styled alongside the latest pieces.

What I love most about this collection is the way it layers. Whether paired with favorites from our original release or styled on their own, these pieces bring a thoughtful charm to any setting— umbrellas shading a backyard garden, striped chairs pulled around an shared outdoor space, coolers packed for a picnic, or towels unfurled on the beach in autumn. Each design was created to mix and match effortlessly, making outdoor living feel both practical and elevated.

The range includes thoughtfully crafted market umbrellas, plush al fresco cushions, versatile pillows, cozy seating for fireside evenings, luxuriously soft beach towels, cooler totes and picnic sets, the classic beach cart, and more. This collaboration has been such a joy to revisit, and I can’t wait to see how you incorporate these patterns into your own spaces and moments.

5 Tips to Help You Actually Use Your Balcony Space This Summer http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/5-tips-to-help-you-actually-use-your-balcony-space-this-summer/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/5-tips-to-help-you-actually-use-your-balcony-space-this-summer/#respond Thu, 14 Aug 2025 21:10:07 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/15/5-tips-to-help-you-actually-use-your-balcony-space-this-summer/ [ad_1]

Key Points

  • Treat your balcony like an outdoor living room with cozy, weather-friendly furniture.
  • Save space with foldable or compact pieces; add comfort with blankets or fire tables.
  • Use curtains, plants, or fountains for privacy, calm, and personality.

If you’re lucky enough to have your own balcony to enjoy, you should work to make the most of it so that you can sit outside and relax there all year long, not just a couple of times per year.

We spoke with three interior designers and asked them to share five of their best tips for setting up a balcony so that it is as welcoming and functional as possible.

Here, they speak to the art of selecting furniture (and properly-sized pieces) for a balcony space, weaving in accents that will make your balcony more usable once cooler temperatures start to hit, prioritizing color and texture, and incorporating features that add privacy to your space.

If you’re struggling to decorate your balcony because you’re not sure how to outfit an outdoor space, consider reframing things a bit and instead view the space as a natural extension of your indoor living room, which is what Mimi Meacham, the founder of Marian Louise Design, recommends.

Meacham suggests taking cues from the pieces that make up a traditional indoor living space but opting for their outdoor-friendly counterparts: think outdoor rugs, tables, cushioned seating, and the like. Pieces like side tables will make your balcony more usable, while decorations such as potted plants will add extra life to the space, Meacham notes.

While you’ll want to outfit your balcony so that it’s both stylish and functional, you will want to maximize space where possible, particularly if the area you’re working with is small. After all, being able to freely move around your balcony as you wish is important—no one wants to spend time relaxing somewhere that’s cramped with furniture.

As such, Alisa Popelka, the founder of Alisa Cristine Interiors, advises looking into modular, folding, and petite furnishings in particular.

“I especially love using garden stools instead of a typical small outdoor table,” she says.

Prepare Ahead of Time for Cooler Weather

If you’re not using your balcony the second summer ends but wish you were able to spend more time out there year-round, taking one simple step—investing in an outdoor blanket—will work wonders.

“It’s perfect for those serene mornings with a book or cozy evenings snuggling up,” Meacham says. Order one now so that you’ll be all set for the cooler months ahead.

You can also get creative with your furniture purchases. Rebecca Ward, the founder of Rebecca Ward Design, suggests looking into a coffee table with a built-in fire feature.

“It adds both warmth and a cozy focal point for evening lounging,” she says.

Make Your Balcony Feel More Private

If your balcony is attached to a city apartment and you feel like you can never spend time out there and fully relax due to neighbors around you, you might just need to make a few tweaks.

Ward recommends hanging up solar shades or sheer curtains for some privacy (they’ll also help block out harsh sunlight). To take things up a notch, add a tabletop fountain, which will drown out noise and make time spent on the balcony feel much more serene.

Another technique that Popelka offers is to use plants or a trellis to add both greenery and privacy to your balcony space.

Don’t Forget About Color and Texture

Your balcony should be filled with personality so that you don’t feel as though you’re sitting in a beige box. Popelka recommends filling the space with color and texture to liven it up. This might mean combining a mix of wood, rattan, jute, and other outdoor-friendly materials.

If you’d like those outdoor nights to be even cozier, adding a fire pit is the way to go. Walmart has a Better Homes & Gardens Fire Pit Table that’s on sale for only $124. If you’ve considered getting one, you may want to check this deal out.

Get it.

This aluminum 37-inch fire pit not only sports a classy-looking bronze finish, but it has a stainless steel burner for durability and longevity. Since it’s a propane system, you’ll get a smokeless burn, so you won’t need to worry about fanning smoke away as you enjoy the fire.

The fire pit also has a battery-operated electric igniter that’s very easy to switch on and off. And heat control is a part of the package too. Whether you prefer a small flickering fire or a big blaze, you can have either. Whatever suits the mood!

Customers really love this fire pit, calling it “sturdy,” “first-class quality,” and “easy to put together” in the reviews. They also mention that “it brings family and friends together for our evening get-togethers,” while some note that they love that it comes with a burner lid so it can double as a coffee table.

If you’ve had enough of summer and are counting down the days to fall, prepare your yard with the Better Homes & Gardens Fire Pit Table. At $124 it’s truly a steal, and you’ll be glad you got it.

Evening tour of our backyard patio and gardens!

It’s been a few years since I’ve done a backyard garden and patio tour!

You can see how this space has changed by checking out this backyard tour from three years ago. This time I thought it would be cool to share this space in the evening, with the soft glow of our accent and landscape lighting.

Over the past few years I’ve worked on a few DIY projects in the backyard that I’ll share.

This is our favorite place to be from the months of about April to October. At least when I’m not sweating bullets!

covered patio with large windows

That shaded spot is always lovely, especially with a light breeze going through.

About a year after moving into our house, we had a long patio added off the covered porch. It’s a great spot for our outdoor dining table and a couple of other sitting areas:

Usually by now our container flowers are starting to get a little crispy, but I’ve been babying them all summer. Thankfully they’re still doing beautifully this season! 🙂

We purchased our dining table years ago, and I’ve given up on finding a remotely affordable outdoor table that lasts more than two years. It looks great from far away:

The faux concrete tabletop on this one has cracked and I’ve had to refinish the wood base twice. The latter is to be expected, but the top falling apart is frustrating.

If you have recommendations for a decent outdoor dining table, please share!

We had an outdoor sectional in the other corner of the patio, but without a good place to store the cushions they were always getting soaked. We rarely sat on it because of that, so I passed it along to a friend.

This year we picked up this rocking chair and table set from Lowe’s for that spot:

Storing four cushions is way easier than the ten we had, and we’ve found this fabric holds up crazy well to the rain. They dry out so quickly. We love rocking in the shade!

I picked up that giant cantilever umbrella from a friend who was getting rid of it last year. These things are GREAT if you don’t have a lot of shade.

On the other side of the patio we have a circular portion:

DIY string lights over patio

Our fire pit is the BEST spot in the fall, but we also enjoy it a lot in the spring. This area is a great conversational area, with a fire or not!:

round patio fire pit with chairs

This round concrete portion is about 14 feet across and we can easily fit eight Adirondack chairs:

Adirondack chairs fire pit and lights

I built the pit myself with a kit (and it was SUPER easy).

Check out how much those trees have grown in six years! Here’s how this area started:

fire pit surrounded by chairs

And here’s another pic of how it looks now:

privacy with trees around fire pit

If you’re looking for inexpensive (compared to most evergreens) and fast growing trees, these are the absolute best. We’ve added them all over our landscaping!

I’ve already had to trim them up in our two walkways between the trees once this year, and I’ll probably need to do it again before the end of the season.

metal arbor with lights between trees
I wrapped these solar fairy lights around them and they turn on and off every evening by themselves. It’s pretty magical. 🙂

If you come through from the fire pit area, you’ll find our new addition through the trees:

fast growing arborvitae trees

We had a pool installed a few years ago and LOVE it. I didn’t talk about it at the time because I just felt awkward blogging about it. Plus it all happened way faster than we thought it would. (We figured we’d be on a long wait list.)

This pool has been wonderful so many reasons, but I especially love that it makes us slow down a bit and just RELAX. It’s been both a fun and very calming addition for our family:

chairs around saltwater pool

We chose a fiberglass, saltwater pool and it’s been very easy to maintain. If you have any questions feel free to email me.

There’s a spot behind our house where our spigot is that was always so uneven and a mess. The grass didn’t grow well because we used it as a walkway from the side of the house to the patio.

There was a lot of foot traffic here, so instead of having more concrete added I decided to make it over myself:

I spread a bunch of soil to even it out, then put a landscape liner down under a ton of pea gravel (that I added bag by bag…should have just had it delivered!).

The small plastic border I added does pretty well between the grass and gravel, but not so much with the mulch. This year I added a few extra stepping stones we had with some smaller stones to separate them even more.

I’ve lost track of all of the plants I’ve planted back here, and just this past week gathered a bunch more:

The strawberry plant on the left has been producing tons of berries…that are eaten by something every evening. I hope they’re delicious! 😂

The tall plant on the right is a free peony I need to get planted right away, and I’m excited about the Autumn Joy Sedum in front of it that I got on clearance. I LOVE that plant in the fall and hope to find some more to add to it as well.

I’m on a mission to add as many native plants to our landscaping as I can, so I picked up the smaller pots from a local farmer the other day. I just need to find the perfect spot for all of them.

When we moved into our home we had a trampoline that we placed in the back corner of our yard. We added rocks underneath so we wouldn’t have to move it to mow.

metal raised garden beds on rocks

I only got to one last year, and finally assembled the other two put together earlier this summer. This is currently my favorite spot in our backyard — it’s so much fun to grow your own food!

I have herbs along the left, tomatoes and peppers in the middle and melons and cucumbers in the back right. All are doing SO well this year, I just love it.

I’d love to add a flower cutting garden somewhere next year!

We are so lucky to have this beautiful oasis of a backyard. We love to entertain and have hosted two large parties this summer — everyone always gravitates to our backyard.

I love that our friends and family enjoy this space as much as we do. If you have any questions that I didn’t cover, feel free to leave them in the comments below!

How To Build a DIY Patio Fire Pit the SAFE Way | Thrifty Decor Chick http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/how-to-build-a-diy-patio-fire-pit-the-safe-way-thrifty-decor-chick/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/how-to-build-a-diy-patio-fire-pit-the-safe-way-thrifty-decor-chick/#respond Sun, 13 Jul 2025 07:51:21 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/13/how-to-build-a-diy-patio-fire-pit-the-safe-way-thrifty-decor-chick/ [ad_1]

How to build a wood burning stone fire pit on top of a concrete patio.

There are a few safety issues to consider when building a DIY fire pit on a concrete surface. I’m sharing the how-to here!

Years ago we had a large patio poured in our back yard. The best part was a 14 foot circular fire pit area we designed off to one side.

Large concrete patio with round fire pit seating

One big project I had to hold off on was the DIY fire pit. The concrete contractors advised we wait a bit because the stone for the pit is so heavy. The patio had to cure for a couple of weeks.

Before I started, we got a quote for a small stone retaining wall around the circular fire pit area as well as a fire pit with stone that matched our house. The quote came back at almost DOUBLE what the entire PATIO cost. Lordt.

Soooo we decided to do it ourselves with a kit and it was crazy easy. It doesn’t look custom, but it does the job…burns wood. 😉

It is 3 1/2 feet wide and was under $200. WAY better! It comes with the stones, glue and the metal ring.

I figured it would be easy to build, but it was even easier than I thought! I’ll share some specific tips at the end of the post, but here are the basic steps.

This post may contain affiliate links for your convenience.

I may earn a small commission when you make a purchase through links.

I put the ring together first, and centered it on the hole the construction crew added for the pit:

How to build your own (safe) fire pit

I realized after I was done that it wasn’t centered at all but OH WELL.

Our concrete company included that small hole so they could add a drainage pipe — brilliant! Any water drains out to the back of the patio. If you are adding a patio with a fire pit, I highly recommend this!

The instructions called for 20 stone wedges on the first ring, but I only needed 19. If I had added one more I think it would have been too wide for the metal insert:

DIY outdoor fire pit tutorial

Quick tip — when I started that base ring of stones, I was butting the sides up to each other completely, which made for too small of a ring.

I had to pull them out quite a bit and only place the long ends against each other so it made the circle bigger. Hope that makes sense!

This kit only calls for three levels of stone. The second level is centered over two stones so each row is staggered instead of right on top of each other.

The final ring goes back to the same as the first:

How to install a DIY fire pit

You can stagger them however you want, like tile patterns. Instead of staggering them on the center, you could do 1/3 of the blocks, or even 1/4.

As you can see, I didn’t get the centering just right. It’s OK. 🙂 After the third layer of stones, you add the metal ring back in and you’re almost done!

We added three bags of pea gravel to fill in the hole in the concrete and then up to the bottom of the metal ring :

DIY outdoor stone fire pit

That’s it! It’s plenty big, but if we find we want something grander in the future, we can just purchase a bigger metal ring and then add more stones to make it wider.

I later added one more layer of stone blocks to make the the pit a little taller and more comfortable to rest our feet on:

round fire pit patio with chairs

We added more pea gravel when we did this so it covers the stone at the base of the pit inside.

You can read all about our Polywood Adirondack chairs here! Those chairs are an investment but will literally last forever. They still look amazing and we’ve never covered them throughout years of rain and snow.

Here are a few tips if you want to try this DIY fire pit project on your own!

  • Per the instructions, you shouldn’t burn a fire directly on concrete, hence the gravel addition.
  • A metal ring is necessary when building a fire pit — the stones can crack or explode if in direct contact with the fire.
  • We added enough gravel so that none of the stone was showing inside — they are all covered with either the gravel or the metal ring.
  • We did not glue the stone and haven’t had any issues. But you can use a construction adhesive to secure them if you’d like.
  • If you aren’t starting from scratch with a new patio, you can use a fire pit heat shield or mat to help ensure the concrete doesn’t get too hot over time.

We added evergreen trees around the circular patio the next year. This is how they started:

round fire pit Adirondack chairs

And this is how big those trees are about five years later!:

evergreen trees around round fire pit

Have you built your own fire pit? Any fun treats or meals you make over the fire? This ring comes with an option for a grilling grate, so we may add that later on.

A tour of our covered patio, where we entertain most!

We had no idea how much we’d enjoy having a covered patio when we built our home. This is the spot we spend most of our evenings when the weather starts to warm up!

We had a large outdoor area at our last house, and added to it over the years to make it a beautiful oasis:

Paver patio with stone fireplace

Our backyard was just so pretty and magical, and we definitely missed it after moving. But we soon realized how much we LOVE having a covered patio.

When we moved in, we placed our outdoor table and chairs out there, but we learned pretty quickly that we prefer to lounge in comfy chairs. 🙂

I sold our outdoor table and replaced it with our chairs that used to sit near our outdoor fireplace. This was how it looked soon after moving in:

 Covered patio with tall ceilings

It’s around 200 square feet, which we’ve realized is a perfectly lovely size for conversations with a small group of friends.

You know how I love symmetry! It won out here too, does that surprise you? 🙂

A couple of years ago I moved seat configuration around a bit to give us a little more walking room along the side. Instead of two chairs on each end, I placed two under the large picture window to open things up a bit:
covered patio seating layout

My favorite part is that I just have to deflate them at the end of the season and they take up hardly any storage space.

inflatable outdoor ottomans

We had an outlet installed at the patio ceiling when we built the house, and we hung a TV up there a couple years after moving in. The guy who set up our AV equipment recommended buying a regular inexpensive TV instead of one made for outside — because ours is covered he said it will most likely last just as long.

He was right! We spent less than $200 on this one and it’s still kicking! (We cover it for the winter months but otherwise it stays uncovered.)

I’d love to find a television mount that we can raise and lower, but I haven’t been able to find something that has a pole (since it’s so high up). I may have to rig something up to raise and lower it. 🙂

Usually we have music playing through the speakers in the ceiling. Best decision to have those installed!:

covered patio with large windows

The chairs came from Menards 14 (!!) years ago. They have a little bit of rust here and there, but otherwise they’ve held up really well.

Rejuvenate outdoor restorer
restoring outdoor furniture

I applied it again this year and it really does help to restore the metal and make it look new again.

It’s such a little thing, but we didn’t have a screen door at our old house, and it’s been wonderful to open it up when the weather is nice. The cats are stationed there every minute it’s open:

covered patio sitting area

I love the little detailed trim on the ceiling — it’s a nice little touch. I was going to paint the ceiling “haint” blue but we rarely have bugs nesting up there.

By the way, the fan helps tremendously with bugs when we sit out at night. Mosquitos LOVE ME and I’m happy to find anything that helps.

I love our big wall of windows in our family room — they’re so pretty inside but make a big impact out here too:

We spend way more time on this covered patio than we did on the deck or patio at our last house. (And we used those a lot!) Having the shade is BLISS. We get a lovely breeze through here too so it makes it so comfortable even on a hot day.

This area sits four, but we often end up with neighbors and friends pulling up the dining chairs from the table on our big patio. We’ve had ten or more people gathered around the fire some nights!

The fire pit is used most often on cooler spring and fall evenings:

patio with string lights
round concrete fire pit with chairs

Those plants and trees have grown so much in the past couple of years, I really need to do another backyard tour! Stay tuned for that this summer.

We are so fortunate to have these beautiful outdoor spaces! The weather this spring has been amazing, we just haven’t had a chance to spend much time out there so far this year. I’m looking forward to more fun nights on our patio this season!

Do you have an outdoor area at your house — covered or not? I always thought a screened porch would be lovely too. We’ve considered adding the rolling screens around our covered patio, but they are SO expensive, yikes!

Here’s a list of the items with sources on our porch:

Chair cushions are from Lowe’s

Black metal lanterns were from Costco last year
