‘Tis the season, parents. As if the ‘ber months didn’t send our bodies into fight-or-flight immediately, this is also the time of year when schools start getting spirited. Yes, the School Spirit Weeks are upon us, from homecoming-themed dress-up days to holiday weeks (seriously, “holiday accessory day” is a wild choice), there is going to be a whole lot happening. And you? Well, you’re the one who has to find black-and-white-striped tights for your kid who insists they’re going as Olivia for Book Character Day.

But it’s not the time to panic — and it’s not the time to pull out a spreadsheet and start treating this like it’s a big holiday and you’re now one of those TikTok moms who begins all her Thanksgiving meal prep in September. Listen, you can handle a Spirit Week for the kids. I promise. You just need to follow this guide.

First thing to remember: Spirit Week is not that serious.

Deep breaths. Take one, and then take another. This is Spirit Week. This is not your child’s last chance at school, or a test of your parenting prowess, or a grift set up by the board of education so they can judge you. I promise, not one single school has created the Spirit Week calendar, set it aside, and let out an evil villain laugh while rubbing their hands together with glee. No principal is in their office shouting, “I AM RUINING PARENTS’ LIVES, MWAHAHAHA.”

You’re the one making this weird.

Kids actually do find these days fun, I’m sorry.

Do you know how many times I’ve assumed my kids won’t be interested in Book Character Day or Wear Purple Day or Crazy Sock Day, and then they wake up at 6 a.m. so excited about their tacky outfit? If your kid isn’t into it, it’s fine to move on, but I’m begging you — don’t ruin your kid’s joy.

Don’t match other parents’ expectations; just make your kid happy.

And because your kid is excited, it’s super easy to just focus on them and what they want. Stay off social media if you need to, and don’t worry about what any other parents are doing for Wacky Wednesday or Team Friday. Just ask your kid what they want, manage their expectations (because you are not making a dragon costume, sorry about it), and go from there. When in doubt, review rule number one: It’s not that serious.

Do not spend a lot of money. Save everything in a storage container.

Every Spirit Week, I feel like I hear a bunch of parents talking about how expensive it is, and I’m begging y’all: Do not spend a ton of money. No matter what the theme is — Western Wear, ‘80s Day, Taco Tuesday — you can probably spend less than $5 and make a great look. And whatever you buy, throw it in a storage container. We have used the same pack of craft unicorn horns from when my oldest was in first grade to make a million Spirit Week outfits, along with face paints, hair color crayons, random items like cowboy hats and leis, etc. If you have multiple kids, this will save you so much stress.

And seriously, go raid your child’s dress-up box. Look under their bed. You’ll be amazed at how many things you’ll find for Spirit Week. Ask your friends on Facebook, join a local Buy Nothing group. Somebody somewhere has a pair of knee-high orange socks they aren’t using.

And yes, Spirit Week has always been a thing.

Finally, here’s your reminder: Spirit Week has always been a thing. Maybe you didn’t participate when you were a kid, or maybe you don’t remember it being stressful because you — wait for it — had parents who either didn’t get involved or went insane keeping up with the laundry so your tie-dye shirts were always ready to go. But this isn’t something new, and parents have always been busy — ‘90s moms managed to handle it, why can’t we?

Remember: This is supposed to be fun.

That’s it. That’s the truth. And if Spirit Week isn’t fun for your kids? Then skip it. The minute you’re stressed and trying to force some kind of core memory into your family, the less and less fun it gets.

Flores continues that, “More than the latest new backpack with all the bells and whistles, a fancy outfit, shiny new shoes or a case full of new pencils, Ephesians 6:10 outlines a different outfit called the ‘Armor of God’ that can equip and gird our children in their daily life with spiritual gear that can protect them against enemy schemes, oftentimes covered during Vacation Bible School or in Sunday School, why not apply it to the notion of ‘Back to School’ as well?” 

“As a parent,” writes Flores, “I have confidence that speaking this simple prayer each day with our children as they are on their way to school will bless them to be strong, courageous, respectful, and kind human beings. It will empower them for their everyday battles.” 

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, and pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

4. Hide God’s word in your kids’ hearts to draw from for peace and purpose.

When our two oldest daughters were in elementary school, they attended AWANAS at our local church during the summer months. There, they memorized Scripture verses, earning rewards while hiding God’s word in their hearts.

At times when we aren’t around, we can trust that God’s word in their heart will speak to them and help them in times of need. As Hebrews 4:12 assures, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and Spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Just like television shows and films show what someone says to a person and speak to them in making decisions, we can count on the living word of God to talk to our children, bringing peace and purpose into their situations.

While at school, during times of frustration, temptations, and stress, we can count on it to lead and guide them in their responses and actions.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 urges, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

Jason Kelce might be concerned about his golf swing, but the rest of Us are focused on his daughter Ellie — who is all grown up in the retired football pro’s latest video.

Ellie, 4, plays an important role in a clip shared by Kelce, 37, via social media on Saturday, August 23. As he tells viewers that he’s been busy consulting Reddit for ways to improve his golf swing, Ellie steps in to record her dad and tells him, “Yep, put you in the frame,” after he double-checks her vantage point.

“This is what a million Redditers saw when I begged the internet to fix my golf swing,” Kelce says in the video. “Some of the comments were helpful, offered insightful feedback into how to improve my golf swing. Most were just talking s***.”

Kelce turned to Reddit for help on his swing back in April.

“Hey Reddit golfers,” Kelce began his post. “Jason Kelce here. Now that I’ve hung up the cleats, I’m trying to get serious about my golf game. I’ve uploaded 6 different angles of my swing from a session yesterday. Looking for any tips you can give me – especially on my backswing and follow-through.”

“Been working with a local pro in Philly, but figured I’d get some crowd-sourced wisdom too,” Kelce added. “Thanks in advance.”
