Within any home with a pet, an effective air purifier can significantly reduce the levels of pet-related dander and hair—along with other aggravating allergens and pollutants—bringing relief to those experiencing symptoms of allergies, which typcially impact the sinuses and irritate the eyes.

“HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters are certified to remove particles that are as small as 0.3 microns, and should remove small particulate matter when properly used and maintained,” Melanie Carver, Chief Mission Officer of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, shared with The Spruce Pets. Particulate matter includes pet dander, mold, bacteria, chemicals from cleaning products, dust, and other items commonly found in a household.

To identify the best air purifiers for pet parents, we’ve tested 47 different air purifiers under a variety of conditions, collecting detailed data in both our New York City and Des Moines testing labs along with sending top-performing models to volunteer testers for long-term trials in real homes.

Our overall favorite air purifier is the Winix 5500-2 4-Stage True HEPA Air Purifier. It’s ultra-quiet, highly effective, and the layered filtration system has a straightforward replacement process. We also found a few others that we like and might be a better fit for your space, budget, and needs.

What We Like

  • Four layers of filtration—including a true HEPA filter and pre-filter—effectively capture pet hair and dander

  • Easy to setup and to swap out replacement filters

  • Three colors on sensors indicate changes in air contamination

  • Can be controlled with a remote

  • Built-in sensors automatically adjust for changes in light and air quality to conserve energy

With four layers of filtration—a pre-filter, a washable carbon filter, a HEPA filter, and a permanent filter—built-in sensors detecting changes in air quality, and low decibel ratings for sound even at the highest power level, the Winix 5500-2 4-Stage True HEPA Air Purifier is our top choice among all the air purifiers we’ve tested. The energy-efficient air purifier has a solid CADR (clean air delivery rate) score for dust (243), pollen (246), and smoke (232), and has the top-performing pre-filter for capturing pet hair out of all the units we tested.

“Having a true HEPA filter and a good CADR has been shown to be a lot more effective with reducing allergens,” Allergy and Immunology medical expert, Niha Qamar, MD, told The Spruce Pets.

The sound emitted by the Winix 5500-2 is relatively low so it’s unlikely to interrupt conversations or sleep. Plus, it automatically goes into sleep mode in dark settings—conserving energy and dimming the LED screen— switching back to auto mode in the presence of light.

It’s also easy to set up and comes with a remote for convenient operation from across the room, but does not connect to Wifi for voice command and there’s no mobile app connection for monitoring. When the three layers of replaceable filters require maintenance, a light on the unit’s display lights up, and the process of swapping out and rinsing the carbon filter is straightforward. There are also three light-up color indicators pointing out changes in air quality in real time.

The Winix 5500-2 is suitable for larger spaces, up to 360 square feet, but the device itself is rather big (15 x 8.2 x 23.6 inches) so it might overwhelm a smaller space or a bedroom–which is one of the priority spaces for air purification in a home, according to Dr. Qamar. “I always recommend placement in a bedroom because that is where you spend most of your time and where a lot of dust mites could linger, especially in your bedding.”

For a bedroom, you might want to consider our other top choices, such as the Levoit Core 300s Smart Ture HEPA Air Purifier, our current Best For Odors pick, which received the highest score overall, or our Best for Quiet selection, the Rabbit Air MinusA2 Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier with a streamlined design that’s wall mountable.

Blueair Blue Pure 411i Max Air Purifier

Credit: Blueair

What We Like

  • Mobile app for monitoring and controlling four fan speeds, auto mode, night mode, and child lock setting

  • Wifi and voice command enabled

  • Washable pre-filter and internal HEPA filter

  • Five colors indicate changes in air quality from excellent to very polluted

With the Blueair Blue Pure 411i Max, reliable air filtration is enhanced through the on-demand convenience of a mobile app controlling power settings and monitoring air quality in real-time. After the introduction of common household pollutants in our testing space, the Blue Pure 411i Max noticeably cleared and improved the air quality. It’s also one of the quietest air purifiers we tested, even at its most powerful setting.

The smart Wi-Fi-enabled device allows for voice commands and has an optional child lock to keep settings intact. There are four fan speedings, two power modes—night mode which turns off display lights, and auto mode which adjusts as sensors detect pollutants in the air, and three brightness settings for display lights—off, dim, and bright. With all of these features, this Blueair air purifying system is highly amendable for use in a bedroom with sensitive sleepers and in a living room where it won’t overpower conversations or audio from entertainment devices.

There are five color air quality indicators that let you know when your air quality improves, diminishes, or could benefit from filter maintenance. The external facing pre-filter is capable of capturing pet hair, can be rinsed with water for regular maintenance, and is available in five muted colors. There is also an optional subscription service through Blueair that will send new replacement filters every three, six, or nine months, depending on your needs and use.

LEVOIT Air Purifier

Credit: Amazon

The Levoit Core Mini Air Purifier is small—measuring 6.5 x 6.5 x 10.4 inches— and is designed to clear the air in spaces up to 337 square feet, so it’s ideal for use in smaller spaces, such as a bedroom, den, or office. It weighs a little over 2 pounds, making it easy to move around until you find the right spot for it to work. Similar to our top choice for tackling odors, the Levoit Core 300s Smart Ture HEPA Air Purifier, the Core Mini has a three-stage filtration system that is designed to filter out air pollutants, and it runs quietly with 25dB rating, so it’s unlikely to interrupt your sleep.

We found the Core Mini Air Purifier to be small but mighty, capable of clearing smoke, dust, and allergens from the air. It also tackles larger particles, like pet hair and dander, but it is not as effective with the bigger irritants as other air purifiers that made our list.

The device comes in two colors, black or white, but we felt the power cord could be a little longer and you might need an extension cord with this air purifier.

What We Like

  • Removes irritants and odors from the air with three power levels

  • Built-in sensors monitor air quality and four color indicators keep you informed of pollutant levels from very good to bad

  • Wifi connected for app and voice commands

  • One of the quietest air purifiers we tested, even at its highest setting

The Levoit Core 300s Smart Ture HEPA Air Purifier quickly extinguished the palpable aroma of incense from our testing space in under 30 minutes, and even at its lowest—and quietest—setting its air purifying ability was measurable.

Inside the compact air purifier, there are three layers that work together to filter out particles as large as pet hair from the air. A pre-filter where lint and fibers are trapped, a HEPA filter collecting dust, pollen, and dander, and an activated carbon filter which is essential for the removal of odors, like smoke and fumes, that can enter your home.

The Core 300s Smart Ture HEPA Air Purifier is WiFi enabled and easy to set up. It can be controlled and monitored from an app or through the LED display on the top of the device where settings can be programmed and locked. It is also responsive to voice commands.

It has three air intake settings and at the highest, the decibel rating peaked at 58, which is comparable to quiet household dishwasher, so it’s unlikely to disrupt you while sleeping or watching television. For use in a room with a light sleeper, it has a sleep mode that will turn off all display lights and keep the air purification system running as quietly as possible.

Bionaire True HEPA 360 UV Air Purifier

Credit: Target

What We Like

  • Design allows for air intake and filtration on all sides of the device

  • UV light kills bacteria and germs

  • Ionizer feature attracts and traps pet hair and pet dander

  • Features two nighttime settings that adjust illumination to align with personal preferences

  • Noticably improves air quality in under half an hour

The Bionaire True HEPA 360 UV Air Purifier effectively captures airborne allergens and noticeably improved air quality in under 30 minutes in our testing. The cylindrical shape allows for full 360 degrees of air intake and filtration in a room and a built-in top handle enables portability within a home.

This air-purifying device from Bionaire features six stages of filtration consisting of two pre-filters (one fabric and one mesh), a true HEPA filter, a carbon filter,  a UV light, and an Ionizer. The UV light—which kills bacteria—and the ionizer—which releases a static charge to attract particles including pet hair and dander—can be activated in unison with the air intake filters for expedited air cleansing when a contaminate is present, such as a pet or smoke.

There are three air filtration power settings, and while the highest level produces significantly more noise and makes it difficult to maintain a conversation, the other two settings are sustainable for everyday use—even while sleeping. For use in a bedroom, the purifier has a night-light setting for visibility in low light and a night mode setting that turns off all display lights. There is also an eight-hour timer setting to maintain the filtration process for an extended duration of time.

To maintain functionality, the UV light, and layered filters should be replaced annually (on average), but the process is straightforward and the total cost for replacements is under $100.

Dyson TP07 Purifier Cool Purifying Fan

Credit: Dyson

What We Like

  • Quiet even at highest setting

  • Oscillates for even air flow

  • Quickly clears fine particulate matter

  • Elongated design with a small footprint for use as a floor fan

In our various effectiveness tests, this air purifier from Dyson was exceptionally efficient with clearing air pollutants–including smoke–and significantly improved the air quality in our testing space.

The Dyson Purifier Cool TP07 Smart Air Purifier and Fan was previously our Best Overall choice because of its powerful filtration capabilities, cooling effects, and quiet operational experience. But with a price that’s nearly double our latest Best Overall, the Winix 5500-2 4-Stage True HEPA Air Purifier, we decided to find a new spot for this one on our list.

While it is a larger unit, its footprint is relatively small, making it a great floor air purifier that won’t take up too much space in your home. It also emits minimal noise with low decibel readings even at the highest power level so it’s suitable for use in a bedroom and is unlikely to interrupt your favorite tv show. Aside from its quiet operation, this purifier also has smart capabilities with a user-friendly app that connects to Wi-Fi to control the purifier. The app has the same capabilities as the magnetized remote that comes with the purifier and tracks the room’s air quality over time. The top of this purifier also oscillates to evenly move air and clean it while the unit is in use. This purifier will automatically sense changes in air quality and react to best clean the air, and then reports changes directly to the linked app and the control panel. Backward airflow mode allows you to use the purifier alone without a cooling effect as well.

Final Verdict

Our top pick is the Winix 5500-2 4-Stage True HEPA Air Purifier which has a powerful filtration system able to collect pet hair and pet dander. It also emits low sound levels and features built-in sensors that automatically adjust to optimize air quality, dim the display lights, and conserve energy. For anyone looking for a purifier under $100, check out the Levoit Core Mini Air Purifier which can filter up to 327 square feet and operates quietly.

Other Options We Tested

Hamilton Beach TrueAir Air Purifier: This air purifier was previously our best budget pick based on home testing and research, but after testing in The Lab, we determined there were better-functioning options available at this price range. While we were impressed with the whisper and quiet settings available on this air purifier, which registered a 48.1-decibel reading, its filtration capabilities were not strong on the lowest setting, which still registered 275.7 PM 2.5 after five minutes in the zipped greenhouse.

Pure Enrichment PureZone: We included this purifier as our previous best portable pick but found better options after additional testing in our Lab. While this air purifier is lightweight and has a handle for easy transport, it did not perform well in our greenhouse PM 2.5 test. After running on its lowest setting for five minutes, the purifier measured 829.2 PM 2.5, compared to the 999.9 level prior to turning on the purifier.

How We Tested

We tested 47 air purifiers across our labs in Des Moines and New York City putting them to the task of tackling pet dander and odors.  First, we studied their setup, considering any additional parts that had to be added to the purifier, and we timed the process of getting the purifier out of the box and running.

Then we considered the design of each air purifier, looking at features like oscillation, type of filters included, timed settings, smart capabilities, and color options. Next, our testers measured the noise level of the air purifiers on their highest and lowest settings using a decibel meter. Our testers also evaluated all of the features available on the air purifiers and took time to evaluate their ease of operation and accessibility, especially if an app was available.

To test effectiveness, we set up zippable indoor greenhouses and burned incense, and released artificial pet hair to simulate a polluted air environment, then measured the PM 2.5 (particulate matter) in the air prior to turning on the air purifier and after having the air purifier on for five and 10 minutes. This test was run initially with each air purifier at its lowest setting and then again with the air purifier at its highest setting.

Some air purifiers we tested had VOC (volatile organic compounds) filtration capabilities, so we conducted a similar test using the greenhouses and releasing moth balls in the chambers for 15 minutes before measuring the level of VOC gasses in the chamber and turning on the air purifier. Between tests, we also made sure to air out the tents using fans for five minutes before moving on to different purifiers.

With all of these previous evaluations and tests in mind, we then asked our testers to look at the price of the air purifier and assess its overall value. We then narrowed down our top performers and sent each one to a tester for use in a real home with real pets for continued evaluation over the course of several months with periodic check-ins on ease of use and filtration maintenance needs.

What to Look for in an Air Purifier

The air purifier space has scientifically proven features to consider and technology-based enhancements that you may or may not find useful (app control, voice commands, remote control) along with extraneous attributes added by manufacturers in an effort to differentiate their products.

Key Terminology

HEPA: The U.S. Department of Energy set the definition and standards for HEPA filtration, which stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, HEPA certification is given to filters capable of removing at least 99.97 percent of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns.

CADR: Stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate and is a score calculating how quickly an air purifier is able to remove contaminants, such as dust, pollen, and smoke, from the air in a room. The CADR of your air cleaner should be equal to at least two-thirds of the room’s area. For example, if your room is 100 square feet (10 feet x 10 feet) a minimum CADR of 67 is needed.

Some manufacturers provide three categories for their CADR, such as our Best Overall choice, the Winix 5500-2 4-Stage True HEPA Air Purifier with a CADR of 243 (dust), 246 (pollen), and 232 (smoke). Others offer an average score, like VEVA 8000 Air Purifier with a CADR of 120, while some air purifier manufacturers do not provide CADR ratings for their models.

Activated Carbon Filter: These filters use activated carbon (also called activated charcoal) to filter out odors, such as the smell of smoke, and gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from household products, from the air in a space. They cannot remove fine particles like mold, dust, or pollen from the air so should be used in conjunction with a HEPA filter.

Pre-Filter: Often the first filtration layer capturing larger airborne particles including pet hair and dust. It should be noted that an air purifier is not designed to be as powerful as a vacuum for the removal of pet hair from a space.

UV Light: Select air purifiers, like the Bionaire True HEPA 360 UV Air Purifier (our Best for Allergies selection) have an internal chamber with a UV light to kill airborne bacteria.

Strength

Some air purifiers are more powerful than others, and just how much power you’ll need will depend on the size of the room, how many pets you have, and what, if any, allergies your family members experience. Most air purifier product descriptions include a recommended cubic footage, indicating whether it’s appropriate for large or small rooms.

“Filters are also marked with a CADR (clean air delivery rate), which describes the cubic feet per minute of airflow through the device,” Dr. Payel Gupta, Medical Director of Allergy, Asthma, Immunology and ENT at LifeMD, told The Spruce Pets. “Be sure to match the filter’s CADR with the size of the room where you plan to use the filter.”

Be sure to check the coverage area to be sure it meets your needs.

Cooling Features And Design

Besides cleaning the air, some air purifiers come with additional features, including odor and temperature control. Most also have multiple fan settings, so you can crank it when you’re out of the room, or use a quieter setting at night. You may also want to consider the look of the air filter if it’s going to be in a visible spot. Some come in a variety of colors, so you can choose one to complement your decor.

Sound Levels

While some love the white-noise hum of typical air purifiers, others are annoyed by it. Fortunately, there are machines that are ultra-quiet and others that allow you to adjust the volume. On some models, you can preset runs to operate at different volumes during different times of the day.

FAQ

  • How do air purifiers work?

Most air purifiers work in one of three ways, and some utilize all three modes of cleaning the air:

    • High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter: These are pleated mechanical filters that work by forcing air through a very fine mesh to remove pet dander, dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and other airborne particles. HEPA filters are the gold standard.
    • Activated carbon filters: These work to remove odor from the air by absorbing it.
    • UV filters: These use lights to inactivate germs and bacteria. They’re often used in conjunction with HEPA filters.

  • Do air purifiers reduce pet dander?

When it comes to removing pet dander, an air purifier with a HEPA filter is your best choice. It filters the air and can remove tiny particles as small as 0.3 microns. For reference, pet dander is usually between 5 to 10 microns, so HEPA filters are good at clearing it from the air.

  • Do air purifiers remove dog or cat hair?

Yes, but not completely. If you have pet hair floating around your room, HEPA filters can remove them. Unfortunately, as most pet owners know, that hair is more likely to get lodged on your clothing, bedding, carpet, or sofa. That’s why you may still want to invest in pet hair removers, like a vacuum for pet hair. Check out the top tested and reviewed vacuums for pet hair by The Spruce Pets.

  • Where is the best place to keep your air purifier?

The closer air purifiers are to the source of the pollutant, the more effective they are. In the case of your pooch, keep it close to their bed, crate, or wherever else they spend the most time. Have a cat? Place it near their litter box to help clear the air of unwanted odors.

  • How do you maintain an air purifier?

Always follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your specific air purifier. Some have permanent or reusable filters that can be vacuumed or washed with soap and water. Others have replaceable air purifiers that should be swapped out every few months. Your air purifier may have a special light to tell you when it’s time to replace the filter; otherwise, keep an eye on it after three months of use.

  • Do I need an air purifier with a HEPA filter?

Not necessarily. Many manufacturers have their own proprietary filtration systems. HEPA, which stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air, refers to an industry standard and definition set by the U.S. Department of Energy. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, HEPA certification is given to filters capable of removing at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns. The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technologies provides the guidelines for conducting a HEPA filter test, and it is often conducted by manufacturers on their own products.

Help! My Dog Is Sitting Sideways. Could It Be Their Hips?!

“Hi Dr. Paola,

Abigail is a 2.5-year-old Shepherd/Lab mix. Recently, I have noticed that when she sits, she sits to the side and has to lean against something. The vet said it’s her knees, but I think it’s her hips. She prescribed pain meds, and now Abigail can run like crazy.

My question is, do I need to give her some kind of supplement? And if so, which one? I have wasted money on so many. Any help is very appreciated.

Thank you for your time.”  – Anna

Hi Anna,

You’re absolutely right to want a clear and effective approach for Abigail without wasting time or money on unproven products. At two and a half years old, a Shepherd-Lab mix showing this kind of seated posture may indeed be compensating for discomfort in either the hips or the knees. While your veterinarian observed changes in the knees, your concern about her hips is valid and quite common in breeds prone to both hip dysplasia and cruciate or patellar issues. The fact that she responds well to pain medication suggests inflammation is present, regardless of the exact joint affected.

Joint supplements can be helpful, especially those backed by peer-reviewed research. Look for a product that contains proven ingredients such as glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate, and undenatured type II collagen (UC-II). These support cartilage health and joint comfort. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly those derived from marine sources like fish oil, are also anti-inflammatory and have shown benefits in controlled studies. Dasuquin Advanced, GlycoFlex III, or Movoflex are examples of veterinary-recommended joint supplements with good evidence and bioavailability. Consistency is key here; these aren’t quick fixes but long-term support tools. If Abigail is overweight, even slightly, managing her body condition can have a greater impact on joint comfort than any supplement.

Since you’re already working closely with your vet, consider asking for radiographs of her hips and stifles (knees) to better understand where the structural changes are occurring. This will help guide both treatment and preventive strategies more precisely, avoiding further guesswork or wasted spending.

Good luck!

– Dr. Paola

Help! My Dog Is Sneezing a Lot!

Hello Dr. Paola,

Cooper is an 18-month-old Goldendoodle. He is a joy with lots of energy. Just in the last week or so, he’s been sneezing a lot. What are some things we can try to stop the sneezing?

Thank you. – Judy

Hi Judy,

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing a little about Cooper. At 18 months old and full of energy, a sudden onset of sneezing that persists for more than a few days is something worth paying attention to, especially if there’s no obvious trigger. Sneezing in dogs can be caused by several things, including environmental irritants like dust, pollen, or household cleaners, as well as more specific issues like foreign material (for example, a grass awn/foxtail lodged in the nasal passage), mild upper respiratory infections, or even dental problems that affect the nasal cavity. In younger dogs, foreign bodies are a common cause, particularly if the sneezing started suddenly and includes pawing at the nose or discharge coming from one nostril.

To help Cooper at home, consider whether there have been any recent changes to his environment. Vacuuming frequently, using air purifiers, and avoiding strong scents like sprays or candles can minimize exposure to irritants. If he enjoys sniffing around outdoors, try gently rinsing his nostrils with sterile saline using a veterinary nasal rinse to help clear out allergens or debris. However, if the sneezing is frequent, worsens, or is accompanied by nasal discharge, especially if it’s one-sided or contains blood, it’s important to have him examined. In these cases, a veterinarian may need to perform a rhinoscopy or imaging to check for inflammation, infection, or a foreign object. Mild, seasonal sneezing can sometimes resolve on its own, but persistent or progressive signs should always be investigated to avoid complications.

Best,

– Dr. Paola

Help! My Dog Keeps Scratching Their Neck and Ears!

“Dear Dr. Paola,

I recently got a new Cavapoo puppy, Frida, and she won’t stop scratching her neck and ears! She will be running around and then suddenly stop to scratch herself. I don’t know if it’s her collar or something else. At her last vet visit before she came home, her vet said she was healthy, so I’m worried it might be stress.

Help!– Julia

Hi Julia,

Congratulations on welcoming Frida into your home. Cavapoos are such bright, affectionate little dogs, and it sounds like she’s already full of life. When a young puppy suddenly begins scratching around their neck and ears, it’s important to consider both physical and behavioral causes. Given her age and the specific location, this is more likely to be dermatologic, rather than stress-related. Puppies often react to new collars, especially if they are made of rough or synthetic materials that can irritate delicate skin. If the collar is too tight or has sharp edges or tags rubbing her neck, that could certainly cause the scratching. Try removing the collar for a few hours under supervision and see if the behavior decreases.

However, persistent scratching in the ears or around the base of the ears can also be an early sign of external ear infections, allergies, or even external parasites like mites or fleas. Just because her last veterinary exam was normal doesn’t rule out something that may have developed since, especially now that she’s in a new environment. Puppies have immature immune systems and can quickly react to changes in diet, grooming products, or even new detergents used on bedding. If the scratching continues, worsens, or is accompanied by redness, head shaking, or a bad odor from the ears, I recommend having her rechecked promptly. While stress can sometimes heighten awareness of sensations, true pruritus always has an underlying cause that needs to be addressed directly. Such conditions tend to worsen, so please don’t wait.

Sincerely,

– Dr. Paola

Yes, Pet Allergy Testing Is a Thing—But Does Your Pet Really Need It? http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/yes-pet-allergy-testing-is-a-thing-but-does-your-pet-really-need-it/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/yes-pet-allergy-testing-is-a-thing-but-does-your-pet-really-need-it/#respond Tue, 05 Aug 2025 19:33:35 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/06/yes-pet-allergy-testing-is-a-thing-but-does-your-pet-really-need-it/ [ad_1]

Key Takeaways

  • Allergy testing helps identify pet allergens but doesn’t offer immediate relief.
  • Accurate testing results depend on strict diet control and proper test preparation.
  • Allergy testing coupled with a robust treatment plan can alleviate many of your pet’s allergy symptoms.

If you suspect your pet has allergies, it can feel overwhelming to figure out what course of action to take. The good news is that the more you understand about allergies in dogs and cats, the better you can help your furry friend feel better.

Read on to learn more about allergy testing in dogs and cats.

Types of Allergy Testing

If you have discovered that your pet has allergies, allergy testing can be a helpful tool to try to identify what they are allergic to and how best to treat them. Allergy testing and its related treatments are long-term strategies and will not provide your pet with immediate relief, however. If your pet is in the middle of an intense flare-up, you may need to use other treatments to bring them relief first before pursuing allergy testing.

Elimination Diet

Some pets are allergic to ingredients in their food, and knowing that can help you find a food that is free of those allergens to control your pet’s symptoms. When a food allergy is suspected, your veterinarian will recommend a strict elimination diet trial, which entails feeding your pet an allergen-free diet exclusively for at least six weeks. If your pet’s signs resolve during this time, that suggests they do have a food allergy. This should be confirmed by doing a challenge where they are re-introduced to their allergen to see if their original symptoms return. If they do, that is considered confirmation of the food allergy. Your pet will need to eat a complete and balanced diet free of their allergens long-term to prevent future flare-ups.

Intradermal Testing

Pets with environmental allergies may be allergic to plants, dust, or other allergens in your home or local environment. Sometimes this can be a seasonal allergy that only seems to occur in spring or summer when certain plants are in bloom, or it can occur year-round if the allergen is always present. Testing for environmental allergies is helpful to determine what allergens your pet reacts to, and helps to create a targeted treatment plan.

The gold standard for environmental allergy testing is intradermal testing, where tiny amounts of allergens are injected under the skin to look for a reaction. This is usually done by a veterinary dermatologist. If you discover that your pet has specific environmental allergies, you may not be able to completely remove allergens from their environment, but you may be able to reduce certain exposures.

When to Consider Allergy Testing

Allergy testing is extremely important for understanding your pet’s condition and finding the most effective treatment for them. Without allergy testing, you are only able to treat your pet’s symptoms each time they have a flare-up up but can’t effectively bring them consistent, long-term relief.

Pets that have chronic or recurrent signs like itchy skin, ear infections, and/or digestive problems may have underlying allergies. Your vet may want to eliminate other common causes for these conditions like fleas, skin mites, skin infections, intestinal parasites, and more by doing other tests and/or treatments first. If your pet does not improve after these initial treatments, your vet may be able to rule out those conditions and home in on allergies as a likely cause.

If a food allergy is suspected, testing your pet through an elimination diet trial is very important as both a diagnostic test and a treatment. Pets that improve dramatically on a limited-ingredient diet are likely to have a food allergy, and a long-term specialized diet will also be the most effective way to treat them. If environmental allergies are suspected, intradermal testing can help to identify possible allergens for immunotherapy treatment. This is an important step in creating a targeted treatment plan.

Does Allergy Testing Work?

Allergy testing is highly effective when properly executed. For example, testing is most useful once a pet is already diagnosed with allergies, and if their signs are not well-controlled using other treatments. To diagnose your pet’s allergies, will usually rule out other conditions first that could cause similar symptoms.

However, there are multiple factors that can interfere with getting accurate results.

Contaminated Elimination Diet

When it comes to doing a food trial, it is critical to select an appropriate diet that is truly allergen-free. Most over-the-counter diets are not appropriate because even if they claim to have limited ingredients, they are prepared using equipment that is also used for other diets, resulting in contamination. A prescription limited-ingredient diet, or a home-cooked diet designed by a veterinarian, is going to be the best option to ensure there is no contamination with allergens.

Additionally, food trials require pet parents to be very compliant about feeding their pets nothing but the prescribed diet. If a pet sneaks into another pet’s food, or grabs something off the kitchen table, or even gets a treat that contains other ingredients, it can interfere with the accuracy of the trial.

Inaccurate Test Results

For pets that need intradermal testing, it is important to seek out a board-certified veterinary dermatologist who is highly trained in administering this test and interpreting the results. Pet parents must also follow directions closely regarding how to prepare their pet for this test. Usually, allergy medications like steroids and antihistamines need to be discontinued for a few weeks prior to the test. If this is not done, it can interfere with the accuracy of the results.

Blood testing does not usually require medications to be discontinued in advance, but there are differences in the accuracy of various testing companies. That means the overall accuracy of blood testing tends to vary in general

Treating Pet Allergies

There are many ways to treat pets with allergies. Many times this involves a combination of medications aimed to reduce itchiness, inflammation, and/or suppress the immune system’s reaction to allergens. At other times, topical treatments and oral medications can be used to promote healthy skin and treat secondary infections that may develop.

Immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, is used to slowly desensitize pets to their allergens. Customized allergy shots are created based on what a specific pet is allergic to, and it can take up to one year to see results. Therefore, these pets will need additional treatments to manage their signs while undergoing immunotherapy.

Many of these treatments are effective, especially for pets with milder forms of allergies. However, they can also cause unwanted side effects, become costly, and require daily administration and time-consuming treatments. However, the relief your pet will feel on the right treatment plan will be worth it.

Jimmy BX7 Pro Anti-Mite Vacuum Cleaner http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/jimmy-bx7-pro-anti-mite-vacuum-cleaner/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/jimmy-bx7-pro-anti-mite-vacuum-cleaner/#respond Mon, 02 Jun 2025 12:33:53 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/06/02/jimmy-bx7-pro-anti-mite-vacuum-cleaner/ [ad_1]

OK, fellow dog moms and dads: let’s talk about allergies. You already know the struggle: shedding fur, allergens, dust and hidden dirt can quickly turn your home into a cleaning battlefield.

I’ve just learned about a new vacuum that’s really different from the typical pet vacuums (of which we have several). The Jimmy Anti-Mite Vacuum Cleaner BX7 Pro is a handheld vacuum designed to tackle allergens and pet dander in fabrics, combining powerful suction with UV light to effectively remove mites, dust, and allergens from furniture and bedding.

And, yes, even if you vacuum regularly and get that fur up, the dander and mites are still down in the upholstery in your home, from your mattress and couch to your dog’s favorite bed.

What are Dust Mites?

Dust mites are microscopic creatures that thrive in warm, humid environments and feed on dead skin cells shed by humans and animals. (I know…gross…)

Dust mites are found in all homes but in pet households the presence of fur, dander, and increased humidity from activities like bathing, dog drool and outdoor play creates the perfect breeding ground for these tiny pests.

Dust mites commonly inhabit pet beds, upholstery, carpets, pillows and even mattresses, leading to allergens that can trigger respiratory issues, skin irritation, and allergies in both humans and pets.

What Makes the Jimmy BX7 Pro Different?

As I mentioned, this is a hand-held vacuum and, like other hand-held vacuums, it sucks up dirt and pet hair easily from upholstery.

But that’s where the similarities end. This little vacuum uses UV sterilization to combat pet allergens. The BX7 Pro’s UV-C light sterilizes surfaces, eliminating up to 99.99% of bacteria and mites, creating a healthier environment for you and your dog.

The vacuum also uses vibrations with high-frequency tapping to loosen mites, dust and dander that’s embedded deep in fabrics.

And ultrasound destroys the nerves of the mites as the unit heats to 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) to kill the mites themselves. Like hanging sheets and duvets out on a clothesline, the heat gives your mattress, pillows and upholstery a little sunbath that would otherwise be inconvenient or, in some cases, impossible.

That all sounded great–so I decided to put it to the test. I had some questions:

  • Would the ultrasound be disturbing to dogs’ sensitive ears?
  • Is the vacuum loud?
  • Is it able to tackle all the dirt I know our house’s fabrics can throw at it? This demands a large capacity dustbin.
  • How heavy is this? Vacuuming upholstery can mean holding a unit up to vacuum the back of the couch.

There was only one way to know. It was time to put it to the test!

Let’s Try it Out!

One thing that stood out to me immediately is the width of the intake port. The suction port is over 9.5 inches wide–so much broader than a traditional handheld vac. A wider port means faster vacuuming!

Another feature I noticed was the LED detection system. It calculates the number of dust mites in the fabric and will show red (dirty) or blue (clean).

Partially red and blue means keep cleaning until the bar turns blue.

This indicator light is one of my favorite features. It lets me know when I need to keep vacuuming and when it’s time to move on.

You can use the vacuum in any of three modes:

  • Vacuum + UV
  • Vacuum + Tap
  • Vacuum + Tap + UV

The indicator light makes it easy to see which setting you’re on.

And as for my questions?

Was the ultrasound disturbing to dogs’ sensitive ears? The dogs didn’t pay any more attention to the Jimmy BX7 Pro than they do to any of our other vacuum cleaners.

Was the vacuum loud? The vacuum operates at 78 dB(A) which is about equivalent to a hair dryer. It’s not super quiet–but it didn’t make me want to reach for earplugs either. The loudest settings are the ones with Tap turned on.

Was the dustbin able to hold a large capacity? Yes! The cup can hold half a liter of dust. It’s clear so it’s easy to see when it’s time to empty. The dustbin is washable. I was shocked by the fine, fine dust the dustbin contained when I emptied it! I had already vacuumed the dog bed for the day–so this was EXTRA dust and mites that my regular vacuum had not picked up.

Was it heavy? The unit weighs just over 8 pounds; I didn’t have any problems using it on our upholstery including the backs of the couch and chairs. It was very easy to pull along flat surfaces like the dog beds, mattress and couch cushions.

What Did I Think?

I give the Jimmy Anti-Mite Vacuum Cleaner BX7 Pro a big paws up–it really is a must-have for dog parents, especially if anyone in your household has allergies.

While it is not designed to replace your standard vacuum for floor cleaning, it’s perfect for your bed, dog beds, couches, car interiors, and anywhere else your pup loves to lounge!

Pros for Pet Parents

  • Removes stubborn fur, dust mites and dander from pet beds and furniture
  • UV and heat technology eliminates allergens and odors
  • HEPA filtration ensures cleaner air
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Spacious dustbin

Cons for Pet Parents

  • Not designed for cleaning hard floors. This is a very specialized vacuum. The BX7 Pro focuses on fabric surfaces, so you’ll still need another vacuum for floors.
  • Corded design limits flexibility. I didn’t have a problem with the cord (it is over 16 feet long) but know that you will need to use it while plugged in. The Jimmy BX7 is exclusively cord powered because of its large motor and suction. (Jimmy does make a cordless model, the JIMMY BD7 Pro Cordless.)
