If you have a dog who likes to swim, water toys can be a fun and enriching way for them to enjoy water time. even more. Water toys come in a great many varieties, from balls to sticks to flying discs. We’ve tested dozens of dog toys and even tried out a variety of dog-friendly pools with our pets.

We also spoke with Liv Healy, CBCC-KA, FFCP, Atlas CT, who co-owns Clickstart Dog Training Academy in Orange County, California. When choosing a water toy, Healy looks for visibility, durability, and safety. “Long floating bumper toys with handles tend to be the easiest to grab when the dog is swimming,” Healy told The Spruce Pets. “Toys should also be durable — even bite-proof, if possible.”

Healy also emphasized that safety is key with dogs and water play. Always supervise your dog closely, and build in breaks, even if your dog doesn’t seem to want them. “Overexcited dogs who love toys may be exhausted, but won’t want to stop,” said Healy. For this reason, it’s up to us humans to enforce break time. Lastly, it’s always a good idea for your dog to wear a life jacket when swimming.

The Winners

Our favorite dog water toy is the Chuckit Amphibious Bumper Fetch and Float Dog Toy, an expertly designed bumper with an attached rope. It is custom-made for easy water play and suitable for a variety of dogs, combining lightweightness, durability, and safety. For its extremely low price tag, its combination of attributes makes it pretty unbeatable as a must-have for a water toy collection. Our other top pick was the Playology Squeaky Interactive Floating Dog Stick, which we loved for its squeaker, scent, and two sizes. This hearty stick holds up in any body of water and is also super easy to clean.

Chuckit! Amphibious Bumper Fetch and Float

What We Like: Lightweight; easy on dogs’ mouths; high visibility; buoyancy; highly waterproof

What We Don’t Like: May not stand up to tough chewers

Our favorite pick for a dog water toy comes courtesy of ChuckIt!, one of the most prolific and trusted makers of multipurpose recreational accessories for eager pups. At the Spruce, we also love their resilient Classic Ball Launcher, for an easier and more sanitary fetch game, as well as their durable rubber Ultra Ball and others.

When it comes to water-specific toys, however, ChuckIt’s Amphibious Bumper Fetch and Float Toy is the brand’s standout offering. Made of nylon, rubber, and memory foam, it is maximally protected against potential water damage, no matter how much you use it or how long you leave it floating. (This also makes for easy cleaning.)

The Chuckit Amphibious Bumper Fetch and Float is one of Liv Healy’s favorite water toys. “It’s affordable and soft, and dogs love it,” they said. “Plus, it doesn’t sink when punctured.”

The toy is easy to throw a long distance without losing control of the knotty rope or letting the handle slip out of your hand. This is thanks to the friction built into the ergonomic handle design.

Chuckit makes the toy in orange and green colors that are visible to both you and your pup from a significant distance, making play additionally easy and fun. It is available in two different sizes, and you can also select the model that is ideal for your dog’s size. (Generally, the models particularly excel with smaller pups.)

The only potential downside is that, because of the lightweight material and modest size, the ChuckIt Float Toy is not ideal for very prodigious chewers. Its foam holds out pretty well against most wear and tear, though. Also—with its appealing $10 price tag—it isn’t hard to upgrade if your go-to Chuckit gets gnawed to bits.

Available in orange or green

What We Like: Dishwasher safe; lasting scent; protected sqeaker inside; durable and safe beveled edges
What We Don’t Like: Not for aggressive chewers; squeaker may be too loud for some

We love this durable, floatable fetch stick for long days at the pool, lake, pond, beach, or for use during more intensive water-training sessions. It has safe beveled edges all around, an audible water-resistant squeaker (sealed for protection), and an enticing food-like scent to thrill your water-loving dog.

This chew stick comes in two sizes: the medium size (1.75 x 2 x 6.5 inches) for dogs up to 50 pounds and a jumbo size (2.25 x 2.5 x 8 inches) for larger breeds and more powerful chewers. The jumbo size is slightly lighter than the medium bone because of the different rubber density used to keep it floating. You’ll even be able to get a value pack of two medium-sized bones. The chew stick can float because it’s made from rubber with air pockets inside that provide the toy’s buoyancy.

Your dog will likely appreciate the multiple foodlike scents embedded in the rubber fetch stick. You have your choice of beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, chicken, or peanut butter. The scent is Playology’s patented technology that embeds the scent in the rubber (it’s not just applied to the surface) and won’t wash away, though it may decrease over time. Many reviewers report that the scent lasts for months, and even over a year. Each flavor/scent is a different color, meaning beef is red, chicken is yellow, peanut butter is blue, bacon is purple, and cheddar cheese is the color of cheddar cheese.

Available in medium or jumbo size

How We Picked

Testing: We selected best-selling, highly-rated dog toys for real-world testing. Tests were conducted with dogs. Our testers primarily tested the products in swimming pools or kiddie pools, and were also tested on dry land when applicable.

Throughout testing, our volunteer testers followed a methodology created by our testing and research team to ensure we received consistent notes from tester to tester. Testers provided feedback in the following categories: ease of use, engagement, durability, quality, and value.

Equipped with their first-hand observations and scoring feedback, our editors then ranked and categorized our top picks for the best water toys to suit your dogs’ needs.

When we were unable to test products due to logistical restrictions, we based our recommendations on market research, reviews, and personal experience. We also asked pet parents about their experience with water toys. In addition, we consulted with Certified Behavior Consultant Liv Healy, CBCC-KA, FFCP, Atlas CT.

What To Look For

Safety

Obviously, it is very important to check that any dog toy you purchase is made entirely from non-toxic materials. The toys also should not be too small to prevent any possibility of choking. Pay attention to the dog’s weight that manufacturers recommend for a given toy; if you purchase a toy that is not designed for your dog’s size, it may be difficult for them to teeth on or run with. Also, as with non-aquatic toys, it’s crucial to buy playthings that cannot be chewed up into dangerously small pieces that can be accidentally consumed.

And don’t forget: Water toys should also be able to be cleaned easily to prevent unhealthy germs from building up. So make sure the toy is simple for you to clean, thoroughly washable, and store toys when not in use.

Flotation Materials

All dog water toys should be lightweight and maximally buoyant, so that it is easy for dogs to retrieve them easily. If a toy sinks—even partially—and your pup has to dive under to grab it, the risk of harm to your dog greatly increases.

Visibility

Water games are primarily designed for dogs to get some good exercise, so there’s no need to put them to the test in terms of locating their toy. Thus, most dog toys are brightly colored, and it is important to make sure you pick a bright or even neon design when looking for your go-to for aquatic fetch. Remember, also, that dogs see primarily in shades of blue and yellow! These colors are the best choices for water toy visibility.

More We Recommend

Chewy Project Hive Pet Company Hive Ball Dog Toy

Credit: Chewy

What We Like: Durable; floats well; can also be used out of water as a ball alternative
What We Don’t Like: Unique shape may not be for every dog

Best Ball: It goes without saying that a ball is the most classic go-to toy for a dog, and especially perfect for burning some puppy calories and healthy teething. There are a lot of options for excellent recreational balls for dogs who like to swim, but the Project Hive Pet Company Ball Toy is our favorite. It works in and out of water, with a durable, hard rubber and plastic design that bounces erratically (when used out of water).

Our tester puppy thoroughly enjoyed playing with this toy, both in and out of the water. Impressively, her shark-like puppy teeth did not even come close to denting it, which her parent appreciated. This puppy loved batting the Project Hive Pet Company Hive Ball around in the water, and out of the water, the erratic bounce pattern kept her entertained for long stretches of time.

The Project Hive Pet Company Ball is yellow and comes in one size (2.53 x 2.69 x 2.42 inches). This ball will stand up to rough play, but always supervise your pet while they’re playing with any toy.

Amazon KONG Aqua Floating Fetch Toy

Credit: Amazon

What We Like: Multi-purpose; durable; available in different colors; colorful; lightweight; affordable

What We Don’t Like: Rope is prone to breaking off

Best Fetch Toy: Kong’s floating fetch toy is an entertaining, multi-purpose option for handler-dog play, whether a game of standard fetch or getting a little more serious with some tug-o-war. The adaptable toy is also available in two sizes for different types of dogs, with its classic model designed for pups between 30-65 pounds. The playfully shaped toy floats easily, thanks to its form core.

Despite its lightness, the Kong Aqua is exceptionally resistant to damage, either from rough play, teething, or water. (For a product for very heavy biters and chewers, we recommend the Kong Extreme model, which is extra-durable.) Kong fetch toys are not heavy on the pocketbook, but they are an extra good investment because they work equally well in and out of the water.

Available in medium or large

Walmart Earth Rated Flyer Dog Toy

Credit: Walmart

What We Like: Durable; easy to clean; fun in and out of water, high visibility

What We Don’t Like: Unpredictable bounce pattern may not be for every dog

Best Frisbee Toy: The Earth Rated Flyer Dog Toy is a floppy ring toy made from thermoplastic rubber. It’s designed to be used like a Frisbee, and can be played with both in and out of water.

We tested this toy with a very active 4-year-old Schipperke who really loved playing with it. The toy floats well in water and is also fun outside of the water, bouncing with an enticing irregular pattern that many dogs love. His parent appreciated the toy’s durability, noting that she didn’t see any teeth marks on the toy even after many rounds of tug and fetch. She also noted how easy it was to clean, as you can rinse it off quickly.

The Earth Rated Flyer Dog Toy is yellow and comes in small or large, with the large measuring 10.43 x 8.5 x 1.5 inches.

Amazon QDAN Dog Toys Soccer Ball with Straps

Credit: Amazon

What We Like: Allows for different types of play; safely designed; bouncy; durable; vibrant colors

What We Don’t Like: Not suitable for smaller dogs

Best Big Ball: It goes without saying, perhaps, that a ball is the most classic go-to toy for a growing dog, perfect for burning some puppy calories and healthy teething. There are a lot of options for excellent recreational balls for dogs who like to swim, but QDAN’s Dog Toy Soccer Ball is perhaps our favorite. It works in and out of water, with a durable polyurethane design that bounces far and erratically, in an entertaining way that makes for enjoyable play. If you’re worried about safety issues of any kind, worry not: the ball is designed to fit the same standards as children’s soccer balls.

The key to the vibrant-looking, brightly colored Dog Toy Soccer Ball is its nylon straps, which allow owners to hold it while playing with their dog in a variety of ways, outside of just fetch. The ball is also lightweight—while being resilient against wear and tear—allowing for it to float and bob easily. The medium size of the product is meant for medium-sized dogs between 20 and 40 pounds; the company also makes a larger ball designed for larger and heavier pups between 30 and 90 pounds.

Available in three sizes

FAQ

  • How do you choose the right water toy for your dog?

When selecting a water toy for your dog, make sure to pay attention to the size recommendations. Without careful attention to this, you may find yourself with a toy too heavy or big for your smaller dog to play with, or a toy that gets destroyed quickly by a bigger dog. Pay attention to what materials the toy is made out of (for durability), and make sure it is high visibility, ideally in a shade of blue or yellow, so your dog can see it in the water.

  • Do dogs need water toys?

There is no specific necessity that makes water toys a necessary part of every dog’s life. But if you are a dog parent who enjoys being near bodies of water or has a pool, water toys can be an excellent way for dogs to spend time in the elements and get quality exercise. Additionally, if you have a dog that was bred for swimming, water toys can be a great way to enhance their water time enjoyment.

The 12 Best Dog Tug Toys of 2025 http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/the-12-best-dog-tug-toys-of-2025/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/the-12-best-dog-tug-toys-of-2025/#respond Sat, 04 Oct 2025 14:23:11 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/10/04/the-12-best-dog-tug-toys-of-2025/ [ad_1]

Tug toys for dogs can be straps with balls, squeaky plush animals, or rubbery sticks. You grab one end of the toy, your dog grabs the other with their mouth, and then you start a serious game of tug-of-war.

Veterinarians recommend avoiding rope toys because they increase the likelihood of a dog swallowing a strand of fiber, which then passes through their intestines. For some, it can be life-threatening, so to be safe, we’re not including any rope toys in our lineup.

We asked pet owners, trainers, and fosters for their favorite tug toys and tested a wide range with dogs at home and at dog parks, evaluating each on its durability, size, design, and how well it enables play.

Our favorite overall pick is the West Paw Zogoflex Bumi Dog Toy. It’s made of soft, bendy material that stretches to twice its length. It even floats in water. Plus, it’s dishwasher safe. But there are several other options our dogs also love—and rigorously tested.

wet paw bumi dog tug toy

Credit: West Paw

The Zogoflex Bumi is an S-shaped molded toy that stretches to twice its size. That offers a lot of give for tug of war, whether it’s you and your pup or two dogs playing. It’s also easy to fling for fetch and offers some decent bouncing if it hits the ground.

Available in three bright colors for easy spotting, the Zogoflex Bumi comes in small and large sizes. It floats, so it’s a good choice for water sports. Later, you can clean off all the dog slobber by tossing it in the dishwasher.

The toy is manufactured in Montana by West Paws. The brand developed Zogoflex, its proprietary material made of blended plastics. Zogoflex is BPA-free, latex-free, and can be recycled into new toys through the company.

The material feels kind of rubbery and soft, so some puppies like to chew on it when they’re teething. Always make sure you supervise any gnawing because dogs on a mission might break off pieces of the toy and ingest.

Sizes: 8 x 1.25 x 5  inches (small), 9.5 x 1.5 x 6 inches (large) | Materials: Zogoflex (made of blended plastics) | Colors: Aqua blue, granny smith, tangerine

Outward Hound Invincibles Snake Plush Dog Toy

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Durable fabric

  • Lots of squeakers

  • Three sizes

  • No stuffing

Hold on to one end of this colorful snake and let your dog pull and yank. When you’re finished (or don’t want to play anymore), this doubles as a sturdy squeaky toy. There are two layers of durable fabric with heavily reinforced seams.

The large has three squeakers, the extra-large has six, and the ginormous (at almost 6 feet!) has a dozen. The squeakers keep making noise even when they’ve been punctured.

Credit:

The Spruce Pets

The toy has no stuffing, so even if your dog manages to chew through the fabric, there’s no fluff and guts everywhere. However, some people with really determined dogs say they managed to tear these apart, leaving lots of bright fuzz behind. Although the fabric is tough, it’s relatively soft, offering a cozy cushion when it’s nap time.

Sizes: 24.5 x 4 x 2 inches (large), 40 x 4 x 2 inches (extra-large), 70 x 2 x 5 inches (ginormous) | Materials: Polyester, synthetic fabric | Colors: Blue, green, orange

IKEA UTSÃ Blue Soft Toy

Credit: IKEA

What We Like

  • Very soft, yet durable

  • Can toss indoors

  • Comforting, snuggly toy

Although our tester was initially skeptical about this very soft fabric-covered toy making it through the day without being shredded to bits, the blue and white donut-shaped IKEA UTSÃ was surprisingly durable, only showing minor signs of wear and tear after a few tug-of-w tr matches between her 100-pound German shepherd and 35-pound Heeler. It’s an ideal toy for a low-energy or non-destructive dog. The super soft fabric also makes it perfect for snuggling and comforting—great to take along on a potentially stressful vet visit.

You can easily toss it around indoors without the worry of breaking anything. Plus, it’s machine-washable. That said, our tester’s dogs found this toy too small and simple in design to hold their interest—especially since there’s nowhere to hide a treat.

Sizes: 7 x 1.5 inches | Materials: Polyester | Colors: Blue/white

Chuckit! Ultra Tug

Credit: Amazon

Dogs that are ball-obsessed can have their catch-and-tug fix with this toy by fan-favorite Chuckit. It has a classic orange rubber ball on one end attached to a heavy-duty strap with a leash-like handle.

You grab the handle and let your pup grab the ball for a twist on the game of tug. Or, hurl the whole thing by hand or in a launcher and let your dog retrieve it. Chuckit balls are known for their affordability and durability, and their bright orange color makes them tough to lose.

It comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large, so select the right size for your dog to ensure they have a big enough ball and a long enough strap. The toy doesn’t float, and the strap can fray if your dog gets a chance to chew it without supervision.

Sizes: 2 x 4.5 x 5.5 inches (small), 2.5 x 5.44 x 6.43 inches (medium), 3.1 x 3.5 x 4.85 inches (large) | Materials: Rubber, polyester, synthetic fabric | Colors: Orange/blue

Earth Rated Tug of War Dog and Puppy Toy

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Springy rubber

  • Dishwasher-safe

  • Easy-to-grasp loop

  • Available in two sizes

Ergonomically shaped, this green-colored tug toy has a big open loop on each end, allowing you and your dog to get a really good grip for tugging. The Tug of War Toy from Earth Rated—also the brand behind our favorite dog poop bags—comes in two sizes, small and large.

The small size is close to 9 inches long and recommended for dogs that are 15 to 45 pounds, and the large size, measuring almost a foot long, is for dogs that are 40-80 pounds. When it gets slobbery and sticky, simply send it through the dishwasher in the top rack.

The Earth Rated Tug of War toy is made of natural rubber that is tough and durable yet gentle and soft on your dog’s mouth and gums. That makes it easy for your canine to get a grip without hurting their teeth, but it’s not so simple to tear apart.

If your dog is teething, they might also find the texture of this toy to be soothing. That said, a tough chewer is likely to make easy work of this, so don’t leave your dog unattended when playing.

Sizes: 8.9 x 5.5 (small), 11 x 6.81 inches (large) | Materials: Natural rubber | Colors: Green

KONG Wubba Dog Tug Toy

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Works for tug or toss

  • Has squeaker

  • Many colors

The KONG Wubba is a brightly colored toss-and-tug toy with a covered squeaky ball on one end and floppy tails on the other. Puppies in particular seem to enjoy playing with it.

They can grab one end or the other and tug with a person or another canine buddy. There are so many easy-to-grab strips that several pups can get involved at once. The relatively soft toy is easy to throw for fetch sessions, too. When the racing and tumbling play is over, pups often enjoy just squeaking the ball.

But it’s definitely not meant to be a chew toy, as it can be ripped and unraveled with rough play. There are three sizes for dogs and a smaller version for puppies, and it comes in five different colors.

Sizes: 6.5 inches (puppy), 8.75 inches (small), 13 inches (large), 17 inches (extra-large) | Materials: Nylon | Colors: Blue, red, purple, pink, light blue

Goughnuts Original Tug Toy

Credit: Amazon

For dogs with a serious need to chomp and a tendency to destroy, Goughnuts Original Tug Toy will stand up to their worst. The rubbery toy has a figure-eight shape that helps keep your hand a safe distance away from your dog’s mouth as they bite and grip down. The durable toy is virtually indestructible, and hardly any signs of use were seen after intense testing (also known as playing) with an energetic 11-month-old golden retriever.

The Original Tug Toy floats in water, comes in a variety of colors, and can be cleaned easily with soap and water. It comes in two sizes, medium and large, with the former targeted for dogs 30 to 70 pounds and the latter for pups 60 to 120 pounds.

Goughnuts manufactures all of its chew and tug toys in the United States, and they offer a guarantee. If your dog chews through the outside layer and gets through to the red warning layer, the company will replace it.

Sizes:  9 x 6 x 1.38 inches (medium), 10.87 x 5.71 x 1.5 inches (large) | Materials: Rubber | Colors: Green, orange, black, yellow

TUFFY Ultimate Ring Dog Toy

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Floats

  • Machine-washable

  • Soft, but durable

What We Don’t Like

  • Not for chewing

  • Usually sold as two-pack

This soft dog toy is also tough. It has four layers of fabric, including a fleece cover and seven rows of stitching. That should deter shredding and help keep it from being easily destroyed. There are two sizes and several different colors, and although it does come individually, sometimes it is only available in a two-pack.

The ring shape makes it easy for dogs and people to grab an end. The ring floats in water and is machine-washable, as long as you air-dry.

The toy also has a squeaker, but it isn’t designed to be a chew toy, and aggressive chewers can tear out the outer seams. Pets can toss it, tug with it, and nap on top of it when they’re through.

Sizes: 9 inches (regular), 7 inches (junior) | Materials: Polyester, fleece fabric | Colors: Blue, red, yellow, pink

Nylabone Puppy Power Rings Chew Toy

Credit: Amazon

For puppies who have their adult teeth coming in, the Puppy Power Chew Puppy Teething Rings from Nylabone are designed to alleviate any discomfort while keeping a young dog entertained. The bacon-flavored toy is made out of nylon that is dense yet gentle on gums. There are three rings: a green star, a yellow circle, and a blue circle, and each one has a unique texture.

Our participating puppy tester was obsessed with this toy, chewing on it and taking it with them as they wandered about their home. Due to its flexible shape and approachable size (2.5 x 4 x 3 inches), our puppy tester was able to position the toy in a variety of ways by using their paws to access a new surface.

The small/regular-sized version of this toy is ideal for puppies up to 25 pounds. If you have a larger puppy, you should select a Nylabone chew toy within the Puppy Chew line that aligns with their current size, like the Nylabone Puppy Chew Souper Bone for puppies weighing 50 pounds. This will help minimize the risk of your young dog destroying the toy and attempting to consume it.

Sizes: 2.5 x 4 x 3 inches | Materials: Plastic | Colors: Multi-color

Dewonch Interactive Flirt Pole Toy

Credit: Amazon

The Flirt Pole Toy from Dewonch is designed to encourage interactive play that will have your dog running, lunging, and jumping. The toy has three central components that make it ideal for play as well as a tool for training a dog to drop and release.

There is a 35-inch wand with a rubber grip for a human hand to hold and maneuver with ease. At the tip of the wand is a 39-inch, non-bungee cord that can withstand significant force and won’t snap back, making it much safer than other wands. The third piece is a brightly-colored fleece lure that measures around 15 inches in length and is braided by hand.

The lightweight toy is very durable. easy to store, and the stainless steel wand can withstand some chewing. There is also a longer version that comes with a 39.5-inch wand and is ideal for making a dog run in a large circle. Plus, the soft fleece tethers can be replaced without having to purchase a new Flirt Pole.

Sizes: 35 inches (blue/red), 39.5 inches (yellow) | Materials: Stainless steel composite fiberglass, rubber, nylon, fleece | Colors: Blue/red, yellow

Amazon KONG Jumbler Ball Interactive Fetch Dog Toy with Tennis Ball

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Powerful squeaker

  • Cleans easy

  • Sturdy material

  • Durable construction

What We Don’t Like

  • Can’t hide treats

  • Large for small mouths

Another great tug toy from KONG is this interactive jumbler ball with a tennis ball and robust squeaker toy housed inside with an attached handle. The toy’s exterior is made of high-quality, durable rubberized plastic with just enough flexibility to allow a dog to dig into it with their teeth.

Unlike the typical squeaker toy that wears out easily, this one’s loud and robust enough to keep a dog actively engaged for extended periods of rough play. Because of its sturdy construction and materials, our tester praised the toy for looking “as good as new at the end of the testing period.” They also noted that this toy would make an excellent chew toy for large dogs—their dog, who has a small mouth, needed to “root around for the ball’s handle to pick it up,”

Since the toy is designed as one self-contained unit, there’s no way to open it up to hide a treat inside. However, the absence of nooks and crannies also means it is very easy to clean.

Sizes: Medium/large, large/x-large | Materials: Plastic | Colors: Blue, red, orange, purple

Tonka is known for its tough toys, even for dogs. If you spend hours outdoors in your backyard, dog park, or the beach, you’ll appreciate that this durable, larger 10.5-inch tug toy is great for medium to large breed dogs. The toy’s size is large enough for dogs but not too big for you to comfortably handle during hours of play. The colors of this toy make it easier to track if it gets lost in the grass or sand.

The ridged texture and tire-inspired design of the toy is great for your dog’s dental hygiene; it massages gums and cleans teeth during play to prevent tartar buildup and scrape away plaque.

Note that it’s not recommended for aggressive chewers; the yellow ring appears to be a little less durable than the two outer black rings. Also, although this toy is water-resistant, it is made of dense rubber, so it won’t likely float, but it will be easy to find if it sinks in clear water. To clean this toy, soak it in soapy warm water and rinse thoroughly; it’s not dishwasher-safe.

Sizes: 10.5 inches | Colors: Black and yellow

What to Look For

Size and Shape

It’s important to choose a toy that is an appropriate size for both you and your dog.

“You should hold the toy comfortably with fingers mostly closed around the handle,” says Curtis Kelley, certified professional dog trainer and owner of Pet Parent Allies in Philadelphia. “Your dog should be able to close her mouth around the toy mostly. If it’s too thick, it may cause jaw injuries.”

Materials and Durability

Many tug toys aren’t meant to double as chew toys. Your dog should not be left with them unsupervised. But even when tugging, some toys don’t last very long. Kelley suggests looking for a strong, sturdy material that is tear-resistant. If it’s fabric, check for double- or triple-stitched seams.

Extras

Some tugs have squeakers to make them more entertaining. Others might have a ball on one end or incorporated into the toy, which is so tempting for Labs and other fetch-obsessed pups. The extra that Kelley likes the best is a comfortable handle.

“The handle is a must-have for me,” he says. “The strain on your wrist and elbow can become high enough to risk injury quickly, especially when tugging with a bigger dog. You should be able to hold your wrist straight.”

Kelley also likes a tug toy with special sections. Clearly defined areas make it obvious where your dog should have their mouth when tugging, he says. If your dog loves water, you might want to choose a toy that floats.

FAQ

  • Are tug-of-war toys good for dogs?

They definitely can be, trainers say. “Tug toys are great for dogs to relieve tension, reduce stress, and get exercise. Tug can help dogs calm themselves after a stressful moment and alleviate frustration about a challenging training task,” Kelley says.

Tug toys can also help you teach your dog how to play appropriately, so they learn which behaviors are okay.

  • Do tug toys make dogs aggressive?

Tug toys won’t turn a dog aggressive, but they can get a pup really worked up. “Some dogs become over-aroused when they play tug; some assess the tug toy as a very valued resource and seek to keep it away from you,” Kelley says.

But he points out that the dogs that become over-aroused would likely act that way in many situations. “Dogs who resource-guard a tug toy might display other possessive tendencies. Tugging is actually a great way to encourage your dog to exercise more self-restraint and learn to share if they struggle with that.”

  • Are rope toys safe for dogs?

Many tug toys are made from long knotted ropes that are actually made up of hundreds or thousands of tiny strands. During play, your dog can unravel the fibers and swallow them. That can lead to intestinal blockage or what vets call “linear foreign bodies.” They can wrap around the intestines and be life-threatening. Be sure to store toys out of sight when not in use.

  • How do you play with a tug toy?

Kelley suggests following these tips for a good game of tug:

    • Don’t let your dog tug so hard it hurts you. “If you’re tugging with a dog that’s stronger than you are, it’s up to you to let go if they pull too hard or abruptly. If they want to keep tugging with you, it benefits them to modulate and tug at an acceptable strength level.”

    • Don’t let your dog move their grip closer to your hand. “Dogs often try to move their grip closer. They are excited and invested in the game! But that will make it easier for him to hit you with his teeth, and that’s a big no.”

    • If your dog takes the toy away, they have to bring it back to keep playing. “If you chase your dog around when they win the toy, they learn they should run away with it! You can encourage them to take prosocial actions and resume playing only when they have brought it back.”

    • If you take the toy away, everyone takes a quick break. Kelley suggests, “10 or 15 seconds is fine, just long enough so he’s not lunging back into it the second he loses his grip.”

Why Trust The Spruce Pets?

For this roundup, Mary Jo DiLonardo talked to dog owners, trainers, and fosters about their favorite (and least favorite) tug toys, including Curtis Kelley, certified professional dog trainer and owner of Pet Parent Allies in Philadelphia. She also tested many tug toys and looked at online reviews. They were evaluated on how fun they were, how durable they were, and extras, like handles and balls.

DiLonardo has been writing about pets and animals for several decades. She has a rescue dog and has fostered nearly 60 dogs and puppies. They have all tugged on their share of toys, some more successfully than others. She is always trying different products to keep the dogs in her care entertained, healthy, and safe.

Dogster_Barking News Featured Image FireTag

Whether you believe in global warming or not, there’s no denying that the frequency and severity of wildfires have been increasing in recent years, and along with it, the number of lives lost. Often overlooked is the number of pets that are lost when such a disaster strikes. Each year, over 40,000 pets lose their lives in house fires, with their instinct to hide in the face of danger often leading to their demise.

Cats and dogs can be difficult to find in the smoke and confusion of a raging fire, and are often more inclined to hide from their rescuers rather than seek them out. In 2023, twin brothers Ryan and Rusty Tussing decided to do something to help improve the chances of pets surviving a house fire. As a fire captain with years of experience, Ryan knows only too well the heartbreak of delivering tragic news to devastated pet owners, so together with his brother Rusty, an entrepreneur and animal welfare advocate, they founded Rescue Retriever. Their debut smoke detection device was designed to alert rescue personnel to the presence and likely location of pets in the event of a fire, significantly improving the chances that a pet will be found.

This year, the brothers have taken things an important step further with the introduction of the FireTag.

“We launched Rescue Retriever in 2023 and have successfully protected thousands of families’ pets,” said CEO Rusty Tussing. “But for us, it’s not enough. We wanted to improve the speed and accuracy with which firefighters on the ground are able to locate and rescue every pet. FireTag is our solution.”

FireTag is a lightweight, low-profile design compatible with most standard pet collars. The waterproof, chew-resistant, and durable construction makes it sustainable for everyday wear. In the event of a fire, the wireless activation is triggered by the Rescue Retriever, making a high-intensity strobe visible through dense smoke, increasing visibility on the exact location of your pet during rescue operations. It also features an optional GPS slot compatible with Apple AirTag or Android trackers. No apps, WiFi, or regular charging required – always ready for emergencies.

This device can not only increase your beloved pets’ chances of surviving the devastation of a house fire, but it also reduces search times for those risking their lives to save them.

The new Fire Tag will be available to buy from the website within the next few weeks, with delivery expected in early November. The Rescue Retriever Fire Safety Kit is priced at around $110, which we think is pretty good for something that could save pets’ lives. The kit includes a Rescue Retriever Gen 2 Smoke Detector, 1 FireTag & 1 Reflective Pet Total Sticker.

Rusty and Ryan Tussing

Each base unit can pair with an unlimited number of tags, which can be purchased separately for around $30, making it affordable for multi-pet households. Tags need to be replaced annually, but the base unit only needs to be replaced every 5 years.

And most importantly, stay safe.

The 8 Best Dog Car Seats and Restraints of 2025 http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/the-8-best-dog-car-seats-and-restraints-of-2025/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/the-8-best-dog-car-seats-and-restraints-of-2025/#respond Sat, 13 Sep 2025 12:11:45 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/09/13/the-8-best-dog-car-seats-and-restraints-of-2025/ [ad_1]

From road trips to running errands, your dog needs well-fitting protection to stay safe when you hit the road. While unsettling to think about, pets can be injured or ejected from a vehicle during a traffic accident. But even a turn that’s too sharp or a sudden stop can result in injury for an unsecured dog.

According to Dr. Jamie Richardson of Small Door Veterinary in New York City, keeping your dog “secure and as immobile as possible” is essential for safety in a car. While harnesses, carriers, and crates often make safety claims, there are no official standards or test requirements in place to verify protection for dogs in car collisions. For our real-world testing of car seats, we consulted with Lindsey Wolko, founder of the nonprofit Center for Pet Safety (CPS), which conducts independent crash tests on travel products designed for dogs.

Five of the nine dog car seats and restraints that we recommend were independently evaluated and certified by CPS, and three have been crash-tested in a lab setting, either by Automotive Safety Engineering, an Australian testing and engineering company recognized in the United States and Europe, or by their manufacturer to adhere to standards set for child restraints (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 or United Nations ECE R129).

We tested a selection of dog car seats, harnesses, and carriers, sending each to a volunteer tester to try out with their dog over several weeks and in variable driving conditions. Following a testing methodology written in advance, our testers evaluated each safety product for its ease of use, ease of cleaning, security, size, and overall value.

Diggs Passenger Travel Carrier

What We Like

  • Crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety

  • Seat belt clips and a buckle strap keep your pet secure

  • Easy to wipe clean

  • Space for dog to lay and sit

  • Functions as pet carrier and car seat

Seat belt clips and a buckle strap strongly contributed to this pet carrier’s five-star rating from the Center for Pet Safety. “The bag is structured and sturdy, which makes it feel safe,” said our tester. Their 14-pound dog was comfortable, with space to sit and lie down while tethered to the bag via the interior clip and enclosed during a long car ride.

The Travel Pet Carrier from Diggs is equipped with three pockets, a detachable cross-body strap, and a highly convenient side panel that makes it easy to insert a 20.8 by 11.6-inch pee pad without disrupting your pet inside. Mesh side panels and a zippered mesh panel on top make it easy for you and your pet to quickly check in on each other as needed. The bag is also suitable for airline travel, but it may feel too bulky for daily use as a carrier.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 20 x 10.8 x 11.5 inches | Size Recommendation: Dogs up to 18 pounds | Colors: Blush, navy, charcoal, slate | Materials: Nylon, polyester

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Functions as pet carrier, bed, and car seat

  • Crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety

  • Great for dogs that like to curl up to sleep

  • Removable, machine-washable liner included

  • Hook-and-loop latches for proper seatbelt positioning

If your dog likes to curl up while sleeping, then the distinct round shape of the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed car seat should be very inviting.

After watching an instructional video on proper car seat use, our tester found it easy to use the hook-and-loop positioning points on the carrier to secure a seatbelt in place. The bed is recommended for dogs up to 15 pounds.

The top is made of mesh to facilitate airflow and can also be unzipped and removed for use as a bed outside of the car. The carrier is available in a variety of colors and comes with a removable pad that can be cleaned in a washing machine.

The one downside our testers noted is that the bulky design—which makes it nice and roomy for your dog—made the Sleepypod unwieldy as a carrier, even with the use of the included shoulder strap.

All Sleepypod pet carriers have been tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 17 x 13.5 inches | Size Recommendation: Dogs up to 15 pounds | Colors: Arctic white, glacier silver, robin egg blue, blossom pink, strawberry red, dark chocolate, jet black, first blush, olive | Materials: Nylon, mesh, foam

EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Crash-tested and certified by Automotive Safety Engineering

  • Functions as a walking harness with D-ring attachments

  • Hand-wash, air-dry

  • “Mag-Lok” magnetic clasp closure

A harness can provide a more minimal way of securing your dog while on car rides. The EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness enables you to secure your dog with a standard car seatbelt. “Although my dog didn’t like having the harness on and being restrained, having her securely attached to a seatbelt gave me peace of mind,” our tester said.

The EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness is available in three sizes (small, medium, and large) and has four adjustable points to fit most dogs. Size selection should be based on your dog’s girth measurement.

Our tester found the initial setup of the harness to be intricate, with a few rounds of trial and error required to find the proper fit for her 35-pound blue heeler. “My dog’s chest measurement was a lot bigger than her neck size, so I had to find the correct fit for her chest first, and then adjust the neck accordingly,” she said.

Once the harness is properly fitted, each webbing strap can be locked into place, so you only need to adjust the harness again if your dog’s weight changes. A magnetic clasp makes it easy to put on and take off, and a seatbelt is easily threaded through the handles on the harness.

The EzyDog harness was independently crash-tested and certified by Automotive Safety Engineering in Australia (which is recognized in the U.S. and Europe). It also surpasses the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) that the U.S. Department of Transportation established for child restraint systems.

Certification: Automotive Safety Engineering | Dimensions: 19.29 x 9.45 x 0.24 inches (large) | Size Recommendation: 11- to 25-inch girth (small), 15- to 34-inch girth (medium), 19- to 42-inch girth (large) | Colors: Black | Materials: Nylon, synthetic fabric

  • Compatible with any vehicle seatbelt system

  • Available in fives sizes and five colors

The Kurgo Tru-Fit Enhanced Strength Dog Harness comes in five sizes to fit dogs up to 75 pounds with a maximum chest size of 44 inches. This Kurgo harness is also equipped with a no-pull D ring on the front, a D ring on the back, and a padded chest plate to help keep your dog protected and comfortable while in the car and on a walk. The machine-washable harness is compatible with any vehicle seat belt system, and it includes a carabiner to attach the harness properly, along with detailed instructions for crash protection.

Certification: N/A | Dimensions: 0.25 x 5 x 6 inches (medium) | Size Recommendation: 12- to 18-inch chest (extra small), 16- to 22-inch chest (small), 18- to 28-inch chest (medium), 24- to 36-inch chest (large), 28- to 44-inch chest (extra large) | Colors: Black, charcoal, deep violet, ink blue, red | Materials: Nylon

Sleepypod Atom Pet Carrier

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety

  • Large pockets on front and back for pet travel essentials

  • Fits beneath a wide range of airline seats

  • Folds flat for easy storage

This car seat and carrier for very small dogs is easy to secure in a car by placing a seatbelt through the built-in buckles located on each side. And like the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed, the Sleepypod Atom Carrier is tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety.

Our tester enjoyed the ease of use and peace of mind this carrier provided and found themselves taking their petite dog with them everywhere. A padded, adjustable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry, and the zippered mesh panel at the top offers convenient access to your furry friend.

The bag is designed for dogs (and cats!) up to 12 pounds. It’s easy to wipe clean and can be used in the main cabin on most commercial flights.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 10.5 x 8.5 x 17 inches | Size Recommendation: Dogs up to 12 pounds | Colors: Robin egg blue, blossom pink, strawberry red, dark chocolate, jet black, first blush, olive, charcoal | Materials: Nylon, polyester

Rock Creek Crates Stationary Dog Crate

Credit: Rock Creek

What We Like

  • Crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety

  • No assembly required

  • Soft, removable pad included

  • Appropriate for daily crate use

  • 10-year guarantee from manufacturer

If you have a large doggo, this CPS-certified crate made from aircraft-grade aluminum can be used to transport your precious canine cargo. “I love all of the colors this comes in, and it’s clear they’re thinking about what dog owners want and made a very secure crate,” said our tester. “This fits my extremely tall dog, and he seems super comfortable in it.”

The Aluminum Dog Crate from Rock Creek Crates is made in the U.S. and comes in three sizes. The manufacturer recommends measuring your dog’s height and length to find the right size for your dog.

Our tester used the crate for daily use in their home as well as for safety in their SUV. The size of the crate is too large for some vehicles (e.g., smaller SUVs, hatchbacks), so double-check the measurements for your car before purchasing.

The crate arrives fully assembled with a removable pad inside and padded handles on the outside. It’s easy to wipe clean and has non-slip feet.

To ensure that your dog stays safely inside the crate at all times, the front door has a lock and key, making it escape-proof. Our tester’s dog tried and wore itself out. It’s expensive, but it does come with a 10-year guarantee from the manufacturer.

Certification: Center for Pet Safety | Dimensions: 30 x 20 x 22 inches (medium) | Size Recommendation: Under 22 inches in height (medium), under 27 inches in height (large), under 32 inches in height (extra-large) | Colors: Gray slate, midnight black, white snowfall, sand dune, blue skyline, plum field, navy river | Materials: Aluminum

  • Canopy fabric is UPF 50+

  • Made with naturally flame resistant fabric

  • Easily secures in place and can be used as pet stroller with frame (sold separately)

The carrier is offered in three sizes for dogs up to 30 pounds, provides protection from sunlight, and has been lab tested to meet the safety benchmarks for children’s restraints in accordance with United Nations ECE (R129).

The pet carrier has a sturdy frame and is covered in naturally flame-resistant fabric. The moveable canopy provides UPF 50+ protection on top, along with zippered mesh windows throughout for visibility and airflow.

Lealchum Dog Booster Car Seat

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Comfortable plush fabric

  • Six-inch thick breathable memory foam

  • Storage pockets on both sides

  • Machine washable cover in 11 colors

Riding in a car seat, particularly one with a booster, not only provides support and stability but can also help with motion sickness in small dogs, as it lets them see out the window. Not having a clear view of moving objects outside while the inner ear is sensing motion leads to brain confusion and nausea. The Lealchum Dog Booster Car Seat is designed with a six-inch thick memory foam cushion to remedy this situation by offering dogs up to 30 pounds a secure and comfortable way to enjoy the scenery.

Although we didn’t test this dog booster car seat, it’s a top-rated pick at Amazon. Many five-star reviews praise its safety features, which include two adjustable shoulder straps, an anti-slip bottom, four adjustable safety dog leashes, and a harness channel for the car’s seat belt. The removable soft seat cover, which has storage pockets on both sides, is machine-washable and comes in 11 colors.

At 19 x 19 x 19 inches, this booster car seat is roomy enough for two very small dogs or one small to medium dog. The brand also makes a wider model with a maximum weight limit of 55 pounds for medium dogs. We should point out that this car seat has not been crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety.

Certification: None | Dimensions:  19 x 19 x 19 inches | Size Recommendation: Up to 30 pounds | Colors: Beige, black, black/brown, black/grey, black/red, green, grey, pink, red, coffee, purple | Materials: Velvet, memory foam

How We Tested

We researched independently crash-tested and certified safe dog carriers, crates, and harnesses from the Center for Pet Safety in the United States and Automotive Engineering Safety in Australia, and then selected 13 products for real-world testing in a car with a dog.

Each testing duo received a car seat or restraint designed for their dog’s size. For three weeks, our canine test subjects were buckled up and taken for rides both long and short. All the while, each human counterpart observed and provided feedback within the following categories: ease of use, ease of cleaning, security, size, and overall value.

At the end of our trial period, we gathered and analyzed the data and information provided by our testing teams. We then ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the right car seat or restraint to keep your dog safe.

What to Look For in Dog Car Seats

Independent Testing

Many harness and car seat makers claim that their products have been crash-tested, but there are no industry standards for car pet restraints. That’s why it’s a good idea to look for crash testing that’s been conducted by independent third-party groups.

For example, the Center for Pet Safety performed crash tests by using a dog crash test dummy, allowing it to create safety standards and requirements to evaluate pet travel items. So far, only a few products have received the center’s crash test certification, but others are working to be certified.

The safest products are typically more expensive than other car restraints, but they are well worth it, according to Center for Pet Safety founder Lindsey Wolko, who has seen the results of the crash tests and heard many accident stories.

“We recommend that [pet parents] look at this as an investment. These are going to be more expensive, because there’s more due diligence conducted on the products,” Wolko said. “Something is better than nothing to prevent distraction, which can prevent a crash in the first place. However, if you are in a crash, and your pets are in the wrong products, there can be serious consequences.”

Size

Always pay attention to the size and weight guidelines to make sure that a seat or harness will fit your pet correctly. If a restraint doesn’t fit right, your pet might be able to escape, which could cause a distraction or be dangerous if you were to have an accident.

Placement in Vehicle

You should place your dog in the appropriately sized carrier, crate, or harness—ideally one that has been crash-tested by an independent party—and they should ride in the backseat, similar to where you place a human child. For larger dogs in a crate, the cargo section is also suitable, but it is never recommended to have a dog in the front seat of an automobile.

FAQ

  • What is the best way to keep a dog car seat or other car carrier clean?

Wipe down your harness or car seat regularly. Most can be kept clean with a damp cloth, but some have linings that can be machine-washed—like dog car seat covers—or hosed down. Always check the manufacturer’s directions.

  • Is it safe for dogs to ride in the front seat?

“Never, ever, never ever,” says Wolko. That’s because airbags can deploy and hurt them, and also because dogs can become a major distraction while you’re driving. Then you’re paying attention to your pet instead of the road.

  • Are dog car seats or restraints required by law?

Most states don’t have laws that require dogs to be restrained, but some do, so it’s always a good idea to check. Rhode Island, for example, requires pets to be secured with a harness or crate, or in some other way.

In other states, drivers may be charged under existing distracted-driver laws if a loose pet is the reason they get into an accident. Securing your pup with a sturdy dog seat belt is just a good preventive measure.

“Those are consistent across the country,” says Wolko. “If you’ve got a dog that’s climbing over your shoulder while you’re driving, and you get pulled over, the police officer will ticket you for distracted driving, no matter where you are.”

Why Trust The Spruce Pets?

After real-world testing, this roundup was updated by Anna Mejorada, a writer for The Spruce Pets, who shares her home with a happy Pomeranian named Gidget. Before researching and writing about pet products for a living, Mejorada embarked on a self-mandated, ongoing quest to find the optimal items for her dog. She is now delightfully devoted to helping humans discover and select the most favorable products for their pets.

A previous version was written by Mary Jo DiLonardo, who has been writing about pets and animals for several decades. She has a rescue dog and has fostered more than three dozen dogs and puppies. Pet health and safety are very important to DiLonardo, and she’s always researching the latest products to keep the dogs in her care healthy and safe.

For this story, we consulted with respected safety expert Lindsey Wolko of the Center for Pet Safety. We also interviewed Dr. Jamie Richardson of Small Door Veterinary for background on the dog car seats Richardson likes, what to look for in a car seat for your dog, and why dog car seats are important to own.

If you’ve ever had a cat that constantly tries to escape, you’ve spent a lot of time watching doorways and racing outside to catch your feline Houdini. But there may be a day when you’re not fast enough. Any cat that risks getting lost can benefit from wearing an Air Tag cat collar. Air tag cat collars aren’t perfect GPS trackers, but they help locate missing cats when paired with the right collar and give you more peace of mind.

We’re exploring how air tag collars for cats work, when you should use a cat tracker collar, and what to look for as you shop for AirTag cat collars that prioritize feline safety and comfort.

Don’t Guess When It Comes To Your Pet’s Care

Placed inside a cat collar, AirTags are small, round tracking devices that use Apple’s Find My network and Bluetooth to track a cat’s location. You can pull up the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad to see where they are.

Through Apple’s Find My app, you can play a loud sound on the AirTag’s speaker, which can help you identify your indoor-outdoor cat if they’re nearby. You can also activate “lost mode,” which makes the AirTag detectable by others. Enter your contract information so others can contact you if they find your missing cat.

Since AirTags use Bluetooth and Apple’s Find My network instead of GPS, they’re not as reliable in remote settings and work better in populated areas.

AirTags don’t replace microchipping. Escape-prone felines may be taken to a veterinarian for identification in a pet recovery database or may slip their collar. Microchipping is still the best way to keep your cat safe, but AirTag cat collars are an added layer of security.

What to Look for in an AirTag Dog Collar for Cats

The best Air Tag cat collars fit comfortably and securely hold AirTags and are designed to maximize visibility and safety. Consider these factors as you shop for cat trackers:

  • Breakaway safety: Cats are known for getting into small spaces and risk getting stuck or strangled if their collar gets snagged. All AirTag cat collars should release under pressure to prevent harm.
  • Lightweight design: Cat Airtag collars should be wearable for long periods and made of soft materials like nylon that won’t irritate feline necks. AirTags add a bit of
  • Secure AirTag fit: An Air Tag cat collar should keep the AirTag close to the neck without dangling or bouncing.
  • Durability and comfort: Soft materials that won’t irritate your cat’s neck.
  • Visibility: Reflective strips and bright colors help you identify cats in low-light conditions.
  • Ease of cleaning: Cats can get messy. Choose a collar that’s easy to wipe clean.

Your cat should be microchipped, and an ID tag should be worn on a cat collar. Since cats can escape Air Tag cat collars with breakaway buckles, there’s a chance your beloved cat will be outdoors with nothing more than a microchip to identify them by.

Some cats get irritated when wearing a collar, so you may need to give them time to adjust. If they’re having issues with a nylon collar, a hypoallergenic silicone one is worth a try. Check the condition of the AirTag cat collar regularly, as nylon can fray over time, and collars can show wear and tear.

What to Avoid in AirTag Cat Collars

Avoid AirTag cat collars designed for other animals or built without breakaway buckles. Cats who love to climb can easily be caught on a branch, and a breakaway collar can be the difference between life and death. The best Air Tag cat collar will keep AirTag holders close to your cat’s neck–holders that dangle or swing can get caught, break, or lose AirTags. Never stick an AirTag in a keychain holder. Those aren’t made to withstand pet use, and you may risk losing your AirTag.

Airtag cat collars, microchipping, and ID tags allow pet parents to provide cats with safer outdoor experiences. Select Airtag cat collars made specifically for cats out of durable materials, so they have another layer of protection as they venture outdoors.

The 5 Best Cat Carriers for Car Travel, Tested and Reviewed http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/the-5-best-cat-carriers-for-car-travel-tested-and-reviewed/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/the-5-best-cat-carriers-for-car-travel-tested-and-reviewed/#respond Wed, 20 Aug 2025 03:00:53 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/20/the-5-best-cat-carriers-for-car-travel-tested-and-reviewed/ [ad_1]

Cats can be difficult traveling partners, but preparing them for a road trip and choosing the best cat carrier can make a car trip with your cat much easier. At the very least, a cat carrier for car travel should be comfortable, secure, and safe.

Some cat carriers even include seatbelt attachment points or have proven crash test certifications from non-profit organizations like the Center for Pet Safety, including our favorite cat carrier for the car, the Tavo Pets Maeve Car Seat.

“Carriers should be sturdy with multiple ways to access the cat,” says Elizabeth Czerwonky, DVM, a veterinarian at the VCA Cat Hospital of Chicago. “When not in use for transport, we recommend keeping the carrier or carrier bottom half in the environment as another resting space.”

To find the best cat carrier for car travel, we tested more than 40 highly rated and bestselling pet carriers in real-world conditions, and 5 carriers came out on top.

Tavo Maeve Pet Car Seat

Credit: Tavo

The Tavo Pets Maeve Car Seat is truly a wonder. It can be used just as a carrier, where the bottom can be fitted with a fluffy pad that’s easily removed for cleaning, and the outer rim is fitted with a memory foam that’s comfortable and durable in a crash. Throughout testing, we didn’t bother putting it away when we weren’t traveling because our tester cat (Lola) replaced her old Amazon box bed with the Maeve.

When it was time to go, the Maeve shone even brighter. We could get two cats in from either side of the carrier, taking advantage of two magnetic buckles that keep the top secure. The hoods are see-through, offering a breathable mesh that lets our cats see. When we finally wrestled our cats inside, the locking handle, covered in leather, was easy to hold securely without fear of breaking.

While it might be a bit pricey and heavier than some, the car seat requires no alterations to most cars, locking into parts of the seat designed for child seats. All you need to do is place the adjustable foot on the floor of your car and then lock the two prongs into your vehicle’s lower anchor bars. You’ll know they are locked in when you see icons on the bar go from red to green. Then place the carrier sideways onto the bar, earning yourself another green icon when it’s locked in place.  There’s an extra piece designed to protect the side panel that you can hook right onto the exterior.

Petseek Extra Large Cat Carrier

Credit: Amazon

Our favorite soft-sided carrier, the Petseek Extra Large Cat Carrier, is an all-around great carrier, though it lacks the car safety features of others on the list. As the name suggests, this is a very roomy carrier with a rigid steel frame and a 55-pound weight limit. Our tester used the carrier with two large cats and said, “This is my favorite cat carrier by far.” Although it’s a bit large and can be hard to carry, it’s even collapsible for easy storage.

In addition to the safety tether inside of the carrier, the Petseek has seatbelt loops which allow you to secure a seatbelt across the “waist” of the carrier, belting it securely in place on your back seat.

The Petseek cat carrier has three doors, with access from the front, top, and side. The mesh screen side panels can be rolled up, allowing you to leave the carrier open and accessible to your cat. The fleece liner inside is removable and can be machine-washed.

Dimensions: 24 x 16.5 x 16 inches | Materials: Polyester, nylon mesh, steel frame | Weight: 6.4 pounds

Pidan Expandable Travel Habitat Carrier

Credit: Pidan

What We Like

  • Made to collapse

  • Sturdy material

  • Lightweight

Lugging around a heavy car seat for your cat can be a real strain, so you may want to try this option from Pidan. In its backpack form, it’s under five pounds and comfortable enough with padded straps and the back padding giving just enough cushion. And when it’s time for a car ride, it’s expandable, folding up with an extra eight inches of space. The mostly mesh and polyester finish isn’t the most scratch-resistant, with our testing kitty making some marks, though the carrier kept its form and didn’t form any holes. A small litter box is included with the carrier, which is a must for long journeys with your feline pal.

Dimensions: 15 x 15.0 x 23.2 inches (expanded) | Materials: Neoprene fabric | Weight: 4.8 pounds

Tavo creates fantastic carriers, and their Dupree option is a perfect example. The high-quality, sturdy carrier offers enough room for small dogs or cats to lounge about and turn around on the hard plastic bottom covered in a soft fabric. On top, there are two handles, while the carrier itself can be opened from the front. It can also attach to a car seat, hooking its straps onto the metal hooks designed for baby carriers. It’s also stylishly designed, offering a quality bag that wouldn’t look out of place in your average luggage carousel. While the walls are more bendable than the bottom, they can still fit under seats for long airplane or train rides.

Dimensions: 18.5 x 11.5 x 10.3 inches | Materials: Plush, vegan leather | Weight: 5 to 5.5 pounds

One for Pets Portable 2-in-1 Double Pet Kennel

Credit: Amazon

What We Like

  • Divider between can be removed for one extra-large space

  • Folds down into included carrying case

  • Carriers can be used separately

  • Comes with stakes for securing to ground

The One for Pets Portable 2-in-1 carrier lets you transport two (or more) cats while keeping them separate. The dual carriers can be used separately or together, and each has zippable door panels on the front and sides. You can even unzip the dividers between carriers and use the two in combination to form one large interior space.

The zippered mesh doors have velcro attachment points on top, so you can roll them up and leave the portable kennel open and accessible. The double carrier even comes with plastic pegs that you can use to stake the whole assemblage down to the ground on outdoor outings.

However, as our tester noted, the unstructured and saggy bottom on the One for Pets carriers is awkward to carry (and cats will dislike the unsteady footing while you’re carrying them in it), making this much more appropriate for dedicated car travel. Not to mention, there are no safety certifications with this carrier. The included seat belt loops let you affix this carrier to a backseat and provide lots of room for your cats while traveling.

Dimensions: 39 x 20 x 20 inches (both compartments zipped together) | Materials: Polyester, nylon mesh | Weight: 7.55 pounds | Colors: Black

Final Verdict

Our best overall choice is the Tavo Pets Maeve Car Seat, which offers durability and strength even in the bumpiest of conditions. Though it is a bit pricey and heavy, you get a carrier that you know will keep your cat safe and secure. If you want something a little more portable, the Pidan Expandable Travel Habitat Carrier is a great pick since it can be used as a backpack as well as a travel fort.

How We Tested

We selected six car seats and tested them in multiple categories, including design, quality, and portability. Each product was tested for multiple days with one of our tester’s cherished pets to make sure that it holds up to scrutiny. Equipped with this first-hand knowledge, we ranked and categorized our top picks to meet the needs of any cat parent. All of our recommendations are safe for travel and can be trusted when used properly.

Buckling Up Your Cat for Travel

Most pet carriers need to be secured, especially if they’ll be placed in the backseat by themselves. According to Dr. Czerwonky, cats should never be let out of their carrier or left in the car alone since they could cause themselves harm. Look for carriers with specialized straps for securing the waist belt of a standard car seatbelt across the side of the carrier. Some carriers also advise threading the diagonal shoulder strap through the top straps on the carrier, while others instruct users to loop the carrier’s shoulder strap behind the headrest for additional security.

Ventilation

Most pet carriers come with multiple holes for ventilation on the sides or top. It’s important when traveling not to completely block them off since that air flow is crucial for comfort and safety. On car rides, especially longer ones, cats need to feel safe and taken care of, or else neither of you will have a good travel experience.

FAQ

  • Should I put a sheet or blanket over my cat’s carrier while in the car?

“We recommend a towel or light blanket over the carrier to prevent overstimulation by the surroundings,” Dr. Czerwonky told The Spruce Pets.

  • How do I keep my cat calm in a cat carrier?

There are other methods for preparing your cat for car travel, but the best way to calm your cat for travel is to acclimate them in advance. Make sure to keep your cat carrier out, either all the time or for several days ahead of travel. This way, your cat can explore the carrier’s interior and get used to it outside of stressful travel conditions.

Don’t Leave Home Without Setting Your Thermostat to This Pet-Safe Temperature http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/dont-leave-home-without-setting-your-thermostat-to-this-pet-safe-temperature/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/dont-leave-home-without-setting-your-thermostat-to-this-pet-safe-temperature/#respond Fri, 15 Aug 2025 20:36:49 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/16/dont-leave-home-without-setting-your-thermostat-to-this-pet-safe-temperature/ [ad_1]

Key Takeaways

  • Keep your home at a consistent, moderate temperature to ensure pets stay safe and comfortable when you’re away.
  • Take each pet’s unique needs into account—such as species, age, health, and coat type—when setting your thermostat.
  • Consider using smart home technology to monitor and adjust conditions remotely for added peace of mind.

When your pet is home alone, there’s a lot of trouble they could get up to, and it’s up to you to ensure the home environment is safe. Especially in the hot summer months or the cold of winter, you may be wondering what the best thermostat setting is for pets when you’re not home.

How Temperature Affects Pets

Like humans, pets are affected by the temperature extremes of winter and summer. Without proper precautions, dogs and cats can experience hypothermia or frostbite in the winter and heat exhaustion or heatstroke in the summer.

As long as the thermostat is set at a reasonable temperature and your power is working, your pet is unlikely to experience the dangerous side effects of temperature extremes within the comfort of your home. However, you can still set the thermostat to a temperature that is comfortable for your pet.

Signs that your pet is too hot include:

Please note that if your pet has bright red gums or is vomiting, disoriented, or having trouble breathing, they could be experiencing heatstroke. Heatstroke requires emergency treatment.

On the other hand, signs that your pet is too cold include:

  • Shivering
  • Lethargy
  • Seeking warm beds or other heat sources
  • Whining (in dogs)
  • Hunched posture
  • Tail tucked (dog) or curled around body (cat)

What is considered “too cold” or “too hot” to your pet is affected by their species, breed, age, coat length, and heat status. For example, most cats tend to like slightly warmer temperatures than most dogs. A French bulldog with a brachycephalic (flat) facial conformation may struggle more than a chihuahua. Puppies and kittens are more sensitive to temperature than adults. And lastly, some health conditions, such as obesity, kidney disease, or heart disease, can affect how your animal responds to temperature.

Recommended Temperature Ranges

In the summer, most dogs and cats will do well with a thermostat setting of 75–78°F. If your dog is showing signs of being too hot at this temperature, then you can decrease the thermostat setting until you find a comfortable temperature for your pet. Cats can enjoy even warmer temperatures into the mid-80s, though this may not be a reasonable setting for your household.

In the winter, your dog is likely to be comfortable with a thermostat setting of 65–72°F. However, cats enjoy warmer temperatures. They may find 69–72°F more comfortable, and even then, you may need to provide blankets and warm beds for them to snuggle into.

If no one is home and you’re looking for safe, comfortable range for all pets in any season, 68—75°F is generally tolerable.

Smart Home Solutions

Smart home solutions allow you to monitor your pet even when they’re home alone.

If you are anxious about the thermostat, consider installing a thermostat with remote monitoring. Some smart thermostats allow you to set the temperature from your phone. Consider setting a schedule for your thermostat to ensure it moves to a temperature that is comfortable for your pet when you’re away at work.

You can also install pet cameras that allow you to check in on your pet while you’re away. Some pet cameras have temperature monitoring systems that can alert you via phone if the temperature drops below or rises above a certain range.

Special Considerations

As with all things related to pet care, there are special considerations to take into account when setting the thermostat

Multi-Pet Households

Your individual pets may have different temperature ranges at which they’re most comfortable. Choose a happy medium that works for most and then provide options for heating and cooling, such as warming beds or rooms with ceiling fans, to help your pets stay comfortable.

Medical Needs

Some pets may tolerate temperatures differently due to medical conditions. For example, an obese dog with Cushing’s disease or a cat with hyperthyroidism may not tolerate heat as well. For these pets, you may have to keep the thermostat on the lower end of the range for your pet’s comfort.

Age of Pets

Neonatal animals are sensitive to heat and cold. Even with the thermostat set at an appropriate temperature, you may need to provide additional heat sources, such as warming pads. This is especially true if they are a nursing animal without access to their mother. Senior animals may also be more sensitive to hot and cold.

Finding the Sweet Spot

A safe way to find a good thermostat setting is to pick a setting within the ranges we’ve listed and then see how your pet does. You can make small adjustments until you find something that works.

Remember, pets thrive with consistency! Regular temperature regulation is a great way to help your pet stay comfortable and safe while you’re away from home.

Why Your Cat Sleeps On You http://livelaughlovedo.com/sustainable-living/why-your-cat-sleeps-on-you/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/sustainable-living/why-your-cat-sleeps-on-you/#respond Mon, 11 Aug 2025 08:37:50 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/11/why-your-cat-sleeps-on-you/ [ad_1]

Sometimes cats prefer to nap on a private perch or in the safety of a hidden nook, but sooner or later, most cats end up sleeping on their owner’s lap, chest, or even head. Yes, your cat may do this to bond and feel closer to his favorite human, but the behavior is mostly the result of biological instincts—for example, kittens socializing with their mothers and siblings or adult cats interacting with one another in the wild.

Below are some of the most common reasons why your cat sleeps on you.

Why This Matters to Treehugger

At Treehugger, we are advocates of animal welfare, including pets and other domestic animals. The better we understand our cats, the better we can support and protect their wellbeing.

Marking Their Territory

Cats have scent glands that release pheromones all over their body. Marking humans with these pheromones means that their humans are part of the cat’s in-group; groups of cats in the wild learn this behavior to distinguish members of the pack from non-members. When a cat sleeps on you, it marks you with its scent for reassurance that you smell familiar and safe. Even cats who enjoy solitude may rub and head-butt their owners as part of the same scent-marking process.

Staying Warm

Many cat owners have seen their cat sleeping in a sunny patch on the bed, or even knocking over plants and whatever else is in the way to get an ideal window-napping position. Warmth induces relaxation and sleep in cats. And, few spots in the house are warmer than being directly on top of a person. Warmth may also contribute to the initiation or maintenance of restorative sleep in cats, meaning that seeking warm spots for sleep can help them stay healthy.

Feeling Safe

Animals are more vulnerable to attack while sleeping, and cats are no exception. As a result, cats who see their owners as a sign of safety and security may enjoy sleeping on or near them. In your kitties’ minds, sleeping with you means they won’t get attacked while unconscious because they trust you to keep them safe. Sleeping with their back to you—even if it feels like rejection—is actually another sign of trust.

This cat behavior can also be traced back to kittenhood. When young cats are growing, they’re typically in large litters with other cats, nursing from their mother, and sleeping together in a group, sometimes stacked on top of one another. Particularly without other cats in the house, humans may have a substitute role in this cat dynamic.

Bonding With You

In experiments to stop cats from destructive scratching and urine-marking behaviors, scent-marking proved a powerful way to preserve cat-human bonds. When your cat sleeps on you and marks you with their scent, he creates a powerful olfactory reminder that you both belong to the same group. Being close to humans also allows cats to hear and feel familiar and comforting sounds, like a beating heart or rhythmic breaths during sleep, reminiscent of safe sleeping spaces with a mother cat and siblings.

Cats are most active at night and early in the day, but some will adjust their habits to reflect those of their owners, to maximize time spent together. See, cats do care, even if they like to act standoffish!

Showing Affection

A recent study on cat-human bonding demonstrated that cats aren’t the solitary creatures they’re often portrayed as. In the wild, cats comfortably live in matriarchal societies and exhibit group bonding behaviors including mutual grooming, allorubbing (when two members of the same species rub against each other), and sleeping together. Sleeping with their owner is one way cats show affection and caring.

Why Cats Sleep on Different Parts of Your Body

Cats have been known to sleep in a variety of locations on and around their owners, including their human’s head and neck, chest, and lap.

Head

It has long been assumed that cats like to be near their owners’ heads because that’s where the most heat escapes, but the human head releases about the same amount of heat as the rest of the body. That said, the head moves less when people toss and turn in their sleep, so cats may stay near the top of the bed for safety. In addition, cats use their gaze to communicate with their owners and other cats, so kitties may like being close to their owner’s eyes.

Chest

Kittens spend a large part of their formative development period sleeping on or near other kittens, leading veterinarians to theorize that the sounds of regular breathing and a beating heart nearby may comfort cats and help them sleep more easily. You might also be a calm sleeper, making your chest a perfectly cozy space for a nighttime nap.

Lap

Most cat owners know what their cat wants when it jumps into their lap to sleep—to be petted and receive attention—though there isn’t definitive research to attest to this. Laps are the perfect spot to keep warm and be easily reachable by owners; what cat lover hasn’t spent an entirely inconvenient amount of time sitting in one place to let a peaceful cat continue resting comfortably?

Are There Reasons Not to Sleep With Your Cat?

Your preferences will be quite personal, of course, but there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re thinking about letting your cat sleep with you. If you’re a light sleeper, the presence of a cat in your bed might disturb your sleep and make it harder to fall into a deep restorative slumber. Additionally, some cats track kitty litter into the bed, which raises hygiene concerns. And, you don’t want to inhale cat fur, especially if you have respiratory issues. Remember too that it’s unsafe to let a cat sleep with a child under the age of five, and a child of any age could startle a cat and cause it to scratch.

How to Train Your Dog to Stay http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/how-to-train-your-dog-to-stay/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/how-to-train-your-dog-to-stay/#respond Sun, 10 Aug 2025 20:05:02 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/11/how-to-train-your-dog-to-stay/ [ad_1]

The “stay” command is a crucial basic dog instruction. Nearly as important as the recall command, “stay” can protect your dog from danger. It helps keep your dog calm during chores, while entertaining guests, or in public.

Training this command is not difficult. Practice consistently for five to ten minutes, two to three times daily. A successful stay means your dog remains in place. Start with one to two-second intervals, gradually increasing to several minutes.

Watch Now: How to Train Your Dog to Stay

Gather Supplies

Before you begin, you’ll want a dog collar, extra-long leash (15 to 30 feet if possible), and training treats that your dog loves. You can use this training on a dog that already knows the cues for sit and/or down. If your dog doesn’t know these commands, go back and work on those commands first.

Prepare Your Dog

Put the collar and extra-long leash on your dog. While eventually, the leash won’t be necessary, it’s useful at first if your dog doesn’t stay.

Give the Command

Instruct your dog to sit or lie down. If your dog is excited or restless, starting in the down position might be easier. Say “stay” clearly and firmly, while raising your hand with the palm out, signaling “stop.” Reward and praise if your dog stays put.

Release and Repeat

Release your dog from the command by saying “OK” and encouraging the dog to move. Instruct your dog to sit or lie down again and praise it when she or he complies. Say “stay” again with the hand motion while taking a step or two back. If the dog stays, walk toward it slowly. You may need to keep your hand signal in play. If the pup still stays, give it a treat and praise. If it moves, start over from the beginning.

Add More Time and Distractions

Repeat this process five to six times, gradually taking more steps back and increasing the time period between “stay” and “OK.” Once your dog can stay for 30 seconds or more at the end of the long leash, gradually begin to add distractions, change locations of the training, increase distance, and try leaving your dog’s line of sight during the stay.

Problems and Proofing Behavior

Train in distraction-free areas. Without a yard, avoid busy parks too distracting for learning. Try an empty park (early mornings) or ask to use a neighbor’s yard for quiet practice. Avoid assuming your dog will always follow the command after a few sessions. With a newly trained dog, use caution. Keep it leashed and avoid risky situations where the stay command might fail amidst distractions.

Tips

  • Keep training sessions short and try to end on a positive note. If your dog cannot yet stay, then end the session with sit or something else your dog knows well.
  • Once it seems your dog has mastered the stay command, try practicing with distractions like a squeaky toy or door knocks.
  • Once your dog becomes an expert at staying, you no longer need to give a treat every time, only occasionally. Instead, reward with praise.

How to Find a Lost Dog: 12 Vet-Approved Steps http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/how-to-find-a-lost-dog-12-vet-approved-steps/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/how-to-find-a-lost-dog-12-vet-approved-steps/#respond Thu, 07 Aug 2025 13:47:29 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/07/how-to-find-a-lost-dog-12-vet-approved-steps/ [ad_1]

mom and child posting missing dog flyers

Every pet owner takes care of their pet as best they can. Keeping them safe, healthy, and happy is the top priority, so when you realize that you can’t find your dog, it’s instantly terrifying!

Time is of the essence, so here are the steps that you should take to find your dog and bring them home safe and sound.

The 12 Steps to Take When Your Dog Is Missing

1. Stay Calm and Act Immediately

It’s easy to become agitated and frantic when you realize that your dog is missing, but it’s important to remain calm and focused. You’ll want to take action immediately.

2. Search Inside and Outside Your Home

Before calling for help, start by searching the inside of your house thoroughly. Maybe your dog accidentally trapped themselves in a room or a closet. You should also check your property—under the deck, inside the garage, in the tool shed, and even under bushes. Frightened dogs tend to hide in small places.

3. Bring Treats and a Leash During the Search

Before going out to search, get your dog’s favorite treats and their leash. It can also help to bring a favorite toy and something that smells like them. The treats should be of high value, meaning something that your dog only gets rarely. You’ll want them to be as enticing as possible. Start by searching nearby places that your dog is familiar with.

4. Check With Your Neighbors

Your next step should be speaking to your neighbors. Have them check their backyards, under decks, in the garage, and under their cars. If your neighbors have video surveillance, including Ring cameras, ask them to check the footage in case your dog shows up on it. However, ask your neighbors to stay home and not go out. While this sounds counterintuitive, too many people calling for your dog will likely scare them away. It can make them feel like they are being hunted, so it’s often best to keep the number of physical searchers to a minimum especially if your dog is shy or nervous.

5. Make Flyers

You should make flyers if searching the neighborhood doesn’t turn up your dog. Use large print and a full-body color photo of your dog. Make your phone number big enough to read from a distance, write “Do Not Chase” and your contact info on it, and post the flyers within a 2- to 3-mile radius from where your dog went missing. You can staple them to telephone poles, and ask local pet stores, doggy daycares, and other pet-related businesses if you can post your flyers there.

6. Contact the Authorities

You’ll want to contact animal control, veterinarians, animal shelters, and even police departments within about a 20-mile radius to be on the lookout for your dog. When communicating with them, you should relay your dog’s microchip identification number and go to these places to physically give them your flyers.

7. Put Out Smelly Food

Put pungent food and your dog’s favorite blanket on your deck or next to an open window. The food should be enticing, like bacon or a hot dog. You’ll need to have someone keep an eye on the food, though, since it might draw many other animals, not just—hopefully—your dog.

8. Keep Your Phone With You at All Times

Your phone should be charged and kept with you at all times while searching for your dog. Don’t put your phone on “do not disturb” because any call that you receive might be a sighting of your dog. Keep a notebook nearby too, which you can use to note any sightings:

  • Record where and when your dog was sighted.
  • Ask if the caller is willing to give you their name and phone number.
  • Ask for a description of your dog (to ensure that this is your dog).
  • What was your dog doing (running, lying down, etc.)?
  • Was your dog on a street or in a park or yard?

Use a map to pinpoint the sighting, which can help you figure out where your dog is traveling to.

9. Post Online

Use a full-body picture of your dog, and post it online on Facebook. There are many groups local to your area that are set up for just this kind of thing. You can try posting on other social media accounts, such as Instagram, too.

There are also websites and apps like:

10. Beware of Scams

If someone calls to tell you that they have your dog but are requesting money (or are asking for the reward that you might have posted), ask them to send you a picture of your dog. It’s also recommended that when advertising for your lost dog, you leave out one thing unique to your dog (like a black patch at the base of the tail or something that wouldn’t show up in a photograph). You can ask the person claiming to have your dog to describe this characteristic. Anyone who can’t give you this information or won’t send you a photo is likely trying to scam you.

11.  Check In With Your Microchip Company

Let the microchip company that you use for your dog know that they are missing. Ensure that your contact information has been kept up to date so they can contact you if your dog is found.

12.  Don’t Give Up

Sometimes, the worst happens, but there are multiple stories out there of animals being reunited with their owners even years later! Be persistent and systematic in your search for your dog.

What to Do If You Spot Your Dog

Don’t chase them or holler out their name. This is especially important if you have a newly adopted or nervous dog, but even dogs that have known you for years tend not to recognize their owners right away. Lost pups may go into survival mode and run away from you.

You may need to avoid eye contact and sit on the ground. You should have your dog treats on you, which you should gently throw in your dog’s direction to get them closer. Your dog will be able to recognize you once they are close enough to smell you, but you shouldn’t make any movement until your dog is close enough to get the leash on without them running off again.

If this doesn’t work, call your local rescue group or animal control officer to ask for help. Keep your eyes on your dog; the professionals can help catch them with their specialized equipment.

Prevention Is Essential

You must ensure that your dog has a collar and tags that you keep updated if your information changes. It should have your address and telephone number. If your dog isn’t microchipped, it’s highly recommended that you do this as soon as possible! If your dog is found, they are typically brought to local animal shelters or veterinarians, who will immediately scan them for a microchip. You can also try a GPS tracker, which will show you where your dog is at all times.

If you need to speak with a vet but can’t get to one, head over to PangoVet. It’s an online service where you can talk to a vet online and get the personalized advice you need for your pet — all at an affordable price!

Conclusion

Having your dog go missing is every pet owner’s nightmare! You are likely feeling stressed and scared, but this is when you must act quickly! The faster you act, the more likely you’ll find your pet, since they won’t have gotten away too far. Getting the professionals in your community involved will increase the likelihood of finding your dog.

If you do spot your pet, remember not to chase them. Get down low, and use the treats to entice them to come closer. Hopefully, you’ll have your dog back home with you, safe and sound, in no time!
