As a certified canine enrichment specialist and pet industry expert, I’ve tested half a dozen smart collars and wearable devices for pets over the last decade. I’m always interested in how technology can give dogs safe freedom while giving pet parents peace of mind.

For two weeks, I tested the SATELLAI Collar with my active Labrador, Burt, on hikes through the Pennsylvania woods and in the city.

Here’s my honest experience with the collar and app so you can decide if SATELLAI is the right fit for your dog.

What Is the SATELLAI Collar – GPS Dog Fence?

SATELLAI is a virtual fencing system that uses GPS satellites instead of buried wires or physical fencing. Using the app, you can:

  • Create fences of almost any shape or size, up to 100,000 acres
  • Add a danger zone within a fence to block off spots like a pond, driveway, or shed
  • Choose between tone, vibration, or optional static feedback
  • Track your dog’s location in real time on a map that also shows your own position
  • Monitor your dog’s activity and rest
  • Use a beacon accessory to set smaller no-go areas

The collar is rugged, waterproof, and fits necks from 14-30 inches, making it best for medium to large dogs.

Setup and First Impressions with the App

Inside the box, you’ll find the collar, charger, quick-start guide, and extra contact points (for those who choose static correction).

  • The quick-start guide explains how to fit the collar, download the app, and pair it to your phone.
  • Downloading the app and pairing the collar was straightforward. I thought it was fun that when I set up Burt’s profile, the app used AI to correctly identify his breed from a photo.
  • The collar itself is on the larger side but Burt wasn’t bothered. When we took it out on the trails, several dog owners commented on it.

Pro Tip: The app itself doesn’t have a guided tour, so I found myself clicking around to figure out the features. I found the built-in AI chat assistant. When I asked how to get started, it introduced itself as a “veterinary medical assistant” and sent me a detailed message.

Key Features I Tested With the SATELLAI Collar – GPS Dog Fence

Real-Time GPS Tracking and Escape Alerts

This is the feature that impressed me most! The map refreshed quickly and showed me exactly where Burt was, even in heavily wooded areas.

SATELLAI app showing real-time GPS tracking of dog in forestSATELLAI app showing real-time GPS tracking of dog in forest

I also like how the map showed my own location. It helped me to orient the map and find Burt.

If Burt went beyond the virtual fence, the app sent me a push notification and triggered his collar with either a tone, vibration, or static correction. You can customize the settings to differentiate between warnings and escape alerts.

Creating Virtual Dog Fences with SATELLAI

Creating or dragging a boundary in the app was simple and intuitive. I set up the virtual fence before leaving the house, but on one hike, the trail ran right along the edge of the off-leash wooded area; In some spots, the boundary I had set was too close to the trail, and in others it was too far away. Being able to adjust the fence in the app on the fly was very useful.

You can also add a no-go zone within a fence to keep your dog away from specific hazards like ponds, driveways or road crossings.

Training My Dog to Understand the Virtual Fence

A virtual fence isn’t a magic switch. Your dog won’t automatically understand the boundaries just because you strap on this collar.

To use SATELLAI safely, you need to train your dog. I’ve done boundary training with Burt before, but every device is different. I started fresh so he could learn the SATELLAI system.

Our training looked like this:

  • Short, daily, positive sessions (10-15 minutes twice a day)
  • Starting on leash, walking towards a boundary to introduce the tone
    •  Pro Tip: The leash is for training purposes only. The SATELLAI Collar itself is designed for off-leash use and does not require a leash.
  • Pairing the alert with rewards when he returned to me
  • Gradually adding distractions as he got the hang of it

In addition to the tone alert, the collar also offers vibration, static correction, and a few quirky extras: You can tap buttons in the app to trigger an AI voice on the collar to say “Good,” “Go Home,” or play a whistle. These features are creative, but I wasn’t sure when I’d use them. What they do provide is more training time with your pup. As a canine enrichment expert, I see this training and bonding time as a positive!

Beacon: Set Small Boundaries

It took me a while to figure out the beacon because it wasn’t explained in the user manual.

After some exploring in the app, I figured out it’s a small accessory you place on something you want your dog to avoid.

For example:

  • Indoors, it could keep your pup away from the trash can or a baby’s crib
  • Outdoors, I saw one reviewer mention using it to block access to a shed.

The beacon is a clever add-on for targeted boundaries in spots too small to map as a danger zone. It’s roughly the size of an AirTag.

SATELLAI promotes round-the-clock health monitoring, but in my testing, it only tracked activity and rest time.

The activity tracking was very accurate. One day, I set up a quick agility tunnel in the yard for Burt. We played for about ten minutes, and when I checked the app later, it logged eleven minutes of activity!

That gave me confidence that the activity tracker was reliable.

Battery Life and Durability

SATELLAI promises up to five days of battery life, much longer than competitors. In my testing, the battery definitely lasted a long time, but I never pushed it to the full five days. I liked charging it by the door at night so we remembered to put it on in the morning before a walk.

The collar feels rugged and durable. The IP68 rating means it has the highest rating against dust and can handle being 5 feet underwater for up to 30 minutes.

If your dog enjoys swimming in lakes or the ocean, you can use the collar with confidence. As long as the swimming time does not exceed 30 minutes, it is completely safe.

SATELLAI Collar: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Accurate GPS tracking in rural and urban areas
  • Easy to create and adjust fences
  • Unlimited safe zones
  • Works for multiple dogs in one app
  • Beacon adds versatility indoors and outdoors
  • Longer battery life than many competitors
  • More affordable than some other GPS fence systems

Cons:

  • Not ideal for very small dogs
  • Subscription required for full use
  • The app is under ongoing development, with more AI capabilities coming in December 2025
  • Health monitoring is under ongoing development

Is the SATELLAI Collar – GPS Dog Fence Worth It? My Honest Take

For Burt and me, the SATELLAI’s biggest strength was its real-time map accuracy. The fencing features worked well once I retrained him to the new tone, and the beacon added flexibility.

The health monitoring and AI features are limited for now, but the battery life and rugged design stood out.

Compared to other collars I’ve tested, SATELLAI hits a middle ground. It’s not as polished as top-tier systems, but at about half the price, it’s a practical choice with excellent tracking.

SATELLAI is best for:

  • Medium to large dogs with room to roam
  • Families who want portable fencing for different properties or adventures
  • Pet parents looking for reliable GPS tracking

It’s not ideal for:

  • Small dogs
  • Advanced health insights or vital signs

At an MSRP of $499.99 (now $399.99 for a limited time) plus a service subscription of $9.99 per month, the SATELLAI Collar is a solid option if your priority is safe freedom for your pup paired with accurate GPS tracking.

If you take your time with proper training, this collar can give both you and your dog more confidence to explore and make fun memories together.

Keeping your dog safe and preventing escapes is challenging when you are unable to build a fence to contain them. Installing a tall fence is expensive, and some homeowners and renters cannot build them because of HOA or rental agreement regulations. However, wireless dog fences are more affordable and relatively easy to set up.

Wireless fences use a transmitter on the dog’s collar to establish an invisible barrier. When the dog crosses the barrier, the collar beeps, vibrates, or emits a mild shock. Wireless fences have been available for several years, but until recently, only a few companies produced them.

Now, you have several choices, so we’ll discuss the 9 best wireless dog fences that we found to help you determine which model is best for your home. After our reviews, we have a helpful buyer’s guide with additional tips.

  • The 9 Best Wireless Dog Fences

    1. PetSafe Stay & Play Compact Wireless Dog Fence – Best Overall

PetSafe Stay & Play Compact Wireless Dog & Cat Fence review

    Coverage area: ¾ acre
    Correction type: Tone, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

PetSafe is one of the leading producers of wireless fences, and its Stay & Play Compact Dog Fence is our pick for the best overall wireless dog fence. Whether you have a large, unsecured yard or like camping with your pup, you can take the PetSafe wherever you go.

Whether you have an unsecured yard or like camping with your pup, you can take the PetSafe wherever you go with very little setup.

Customers were happy with the PetSafe fence’s performance, but some were disappointed that their cars interfered with the signal.

    Pros
    • Ideal for smaller properties
    • Easy to install
    • Works on all breeds
    • New pets can be added to the system
    • Portable
    Cons
    • Parked cars and hills can interfere with signal
    • Dense fur can disrupt corrections

    2. HOISTSPARK GPS Wireless Fence System Dog Tracker– Best Value

Petdiary GPS Wireless Fence System Dog Tracker

    Coverage area: 999 yards
    Correction type: Tone, vibration, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

The HOISTSPARK GPS Wireless Fence System Dog Tracker uses satellite technology to track your best friend. It doesn’t require an app or transmitter to operate, and it only takes around 30 minutes to set up. The system includes a GPS collar, contact points, boundary flags, and a training guide.

You can adjust the coverage from 33 to 999 yards, and the automatic memory function keeps you from needing to repeatedly recalibrate the collar. It has one of the easiest set-up modes of the models we reviewed, but you cannot use it in spaces with less than 33 yards. Some users mentioned that the battery loses its charge in under 36 hours. However, we think the HOISTSPARK GPS is the best wireless fence for the money.

    Pros
    • No transmitter required
    • Reliable GPS signal
    • Contact points gentle on sensitive skin
    • Automatic memory
    Cons
    • Battery only lasts for 36 hours
    • Complaints of batteries dying faster

    3. Halo Wireless Dog Fence, GPS Tracker & Activity Monitor Dog Training Collar – Premium Choice

Halo Collar Wireless Dog Fence GPS Tracker & Activity Monitor Dog Training Collar

    Coverage area: 1,166.67 yards
    Correction type: Tone, vibration
    Waterproof: Yes

For the ultimate GPS virtual fence and dog-training system, we recommend the Halo Collar Wireless Dog Fence GPS Tracker. After installing the Halo app, you can create up to 20 virtual fences to protect your dog. Then, you can follow the training instructions designed by Cesar Milan to teach your dog how to stay within the boundaries. Some customers mentioned that it takes a while for dogs to learn the system, but they didn’t have any problems after the training.

Although the Halo Collar is more expensive than other models we reviewed, it includes more features, such as the app’s tracking feature. You can track how many miles your dog walked and how long they rested.

Most dog owners were impressed by the Halo Collar, but some didn’t like paying the monthly service charge.

    Pros
    • Creates up to 20 invisible fences
    • Provides real-time GPS location of dog
    • Training instructions by Cesar Milan
    • Halo app tracks training progress
    Cons
    • Not designed for small dogs
    • Requires a monthly service plan

    4. GroovyPets GPS Wireless Fence System & Dog Training Collar – Best for Puppies

Groovypets GPS Wireless Dog Fence Containment System

    Coverage area: 33-999 yards
    Correction type: Tone, vibration, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

Unlike many wireless systems, the GroovyPets GPS Wireless Fence Containment System is suitable for small breeds. The collar fits neck sizes from 6 to 24 inches, and you can activate it with the remote control. The system has six levels of tone and vibration corrections and six levels of safe shock corrections.

The collar is designed to function for 36 hours when the virtual fence is activated, and it’s compatible with other GPS collars. It’s more affordable than most models, but it has a few flaws. Several customers had issues with the GPS signal.

    Pros
    • Affordable
    • Automatic memory
    • Suitable for small breeds
    Cons
    • Collar sometimes loses signal

    5. Focuser Electric Wireless Dog Fence System

Electric Wireless Dog Fence System, Pet Containment System for Dogs and Pets with Waterproof and Rechargeable Collar Receiver for one Dog Container Boundary System

    Coverage area: 328.08 yards
    Correction type: Tone, vibration, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

The Focuser Electric Wireless Dog Fence System uses a transmitter instead of GPS to create a virtual fence on your property. The system includes a collar receiver, USB cable and charger, 20 training flags, contact points, a transmitter, and a test light. The collar contains a safety chip that prevents you from harming your pup in shock mode and a backup battery for power outages.

Although the Focuser system is designed for dogs of all sizes, it only has four shock levels. We didn’t see any customer comments mentioning the shocks were too intense for small pups, but it’s unclear how only four shock levels suit all breeds. If you have a toy breed, we suggest using only the vibration correction.

    Pros
    • Safety chip prevents over-correcting
    • 16 training levels
    • Sound warning after one cycle
    Cons
    • Only 4 shock levels
    • Unsuitable for dogs under 10 lbs

    6. Htcuto Wireless Dog Fence for 2 Dogs

Htcuto Wireless Dog Fence for 2 Dogs

    Coverage area: 1,100 yards
    Correction type: Tone, vibration, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

If you have two dogs and need a wireless fence, check out the Htcuto Wireless Dog Fence for 2 Dogs. It’s ideal if you have a farm or large property because of the collar’s 1,100-yard range, and it’s suitable for dogs of all sizes. It has 30 levels of shock corrections, which is much more than the competition. It also has nine vibration levels and five levels of tones.

The metal contact points on wireless collars can irritate some dogs with light coats, but the Htcuto system comes with silicone tips to protect your dog’s skin. It’s an affordable system for two dogs, but several customers complained that it didn’t perform consistently. Sometimes, it randomly beeps and confuses the dog.

    Pros
    • 30 shock levels
    • 85-hour battery life
    • Silicone tips for contacts
    Cons
    • Must keep transmitter outside
    • Inconsistent performance
    • Beeps randomly

    7. WIEZ GPS Wireless Dog Fence, Electric Dog Fence

    WIEZ GPS Wireless Dog Fence

    Coverage area: 1,100 yards
    Correction type: Tone, vibration, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

The WIEZ GPS Wireless Dog Fence does not require a transmitter and relies on 12 satellites to improve its GPS accuracy. It’s an affordable product that protects two dogs, and it has a pretty impressive range. However, if you have a small property, you’ll need to find another product. The WEIZ collar cannot create a virtual fence that’s under 98 feet.

Most users didn’t have many issues with the collar’s performance, but some said the collar isn’t very durable and only lasts a few months. The biggest flaw with the WIEZ is the safety feature that is supposed to prevent injuries.

The collar cannot be disabled unless it goes through three cycles, and your dog will experience several seconds of vibrations and shocks if you aren’t around to turn it off.

    Pros
    • 2-year warranty
    • GPS uses 12 satellites
    • Affordable for 2 dogs
    Cons
    • Not designed for small yards
    • Safety feature requires 3 cycles
    • Not durable

    8. BHCEY GPS Wireless Electric Dog Fence

BHCEY GPS Wireless Electric Dog Fence

    Coverage area: 800  feet
    Correction type: Tone, vibration, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

The BHCEY GPS Wireless Dog Fence doesn’t take long to set up. It includes a GPS collar, test bulb, charger, and plastic probes. It’s designed for dogs of all sizes, but it’s a little too large for toy breeds. It uses GPS satellites to establish the virtual fence, but it’s not as accurate or dependable as the competition.

Some customers gave up on the BHCEY and purchased other brands because of the signal problems. The GPS takes a while to work, and sometimes, it beeps randomly.

    Pros
    • Easy to set up
    • Fits most breeds
    Cons
    • Satellite connection problems
    • Too large for toy breeds
    • Beeps randomly

    9. ABHY Wireless Dog Fence System

    ABHY Wireless Dog Fence System

    Coverage area: 330 yards
    Correction type: Tone, vibration, shock
    Waterproof: Yes

The ABHY Wireless Dog Fence System is another affordable product for two dogs, and it uses a transmitter rather than GPS. It’s designed to fit medium-sized and large dogs, and it has a 330-yard range. The collar has reflective strips to make your pup more visible in low light, and the battery can operate for several weeks without a charge.

Unfortunately, the ABHY collar only has three levels of tone, vibration, and shock corrections. It’s not designed for small dogs, but with only three shock levels, it might be too intense for medium-sized dogs. It has a decent range, but it doesn’t function well in small spaces under 100 feet long. Unlike most wireless systems, the ABHY doesn’t include boundary flags.

    Pros
    • Affordable for two dogs
    • Reflector strips on collar
    Cons
    • Only 3 levels for each correction
    • Doesn’t work in small yards
    • Doesn’t include boundary flags

    Buyer’s Guide

Pet parents who want to keep their dog in their yard without installing a 6-foot-tall fence will usually start looking into wireless fences and e-collars. The fences have multiple setup options, and most models are simple to operate.

What’s best for you will be determined by your family’s exact needs. Here are some things to consider when purchasing a wireless dog fence.

    Setup Options

The first feature to consider is the setup style. The wireless fences we discussed use either a GPS system or a transmitter. Both types have advantages and disadvantages.

    GPS Collars

GPS collars don’t require a transmitter to function, and some models can be used without Wi-Fi. They’re ideal if you travel frequently with your dog and can be set up in under an hour.

Because they don’t require much equipment, GPS collars meet HOA requirements, and you can use them whether you rent or own your property. One of the most significant advantages is that most function without electricity. Even the high-end models controlled by apps will work if you’ve already configured the virtual fence on a device.

The GPS collars at the top of our list are reliable products that rarely have signal issues or design flaws. However, the inexpensive models are more unreliable, and some users have to wait several minutes to get a signal from the satellite.

    Wireless Transmitter

A wireless home base setup uses a transmitter that sends signals to a receiver on your dog’s collar. When your dog gets too far away from the home base the receiver will emit a noise, vibrate, or administer a shock to let the dog know that they need to move closer to the home base.

The area covered by a wireless home base setup is an exact circle centered on the transmitter. Pet parents with large or atypically shaped yards may find that a home base unit does not cover their entire area and does not allow their dog to access the whole yard.

Those with small yards may find that their dog is allowed to roam in their neighbor’s yard, which is covered by the circular radius. Some transmitters are battery-powered, but the models that use your home’s electricity will not function during a power outage. However, the wireless fences that use transmitters don’t experience the same signal problems as GPS products.

How to Decide Which Fence Is Right for You

When deciding what fence to buy there are several factors to consider. The biggest factor is the size and shape of your yard. If your yard is unusually shaped or tiny, a wireless home base station may include areas of your neighbors’ yards as part of the safe zone. If your yard is too large you may need multiple wireless home bases to cover the entire area.

Another factor that you’ll want to consider when buying a fence is the receiver’s correction method. There are three types of corrective methods: tone, vibration, and shock. A tone correction collar will emit a loud noise when the dog comes near the barrier zone.

A vibration collar will vibrate when the dog leaves the zone and won’t stop until the dog returns to the safe zone. A shock collar will administer a static shock to the dog when they cross the barrier line.

Not all dogs respond the same to each type of correction. Some professional trainers recommend that you buy a fence that has all three options in case your dog doesn’t react appropriately to the first chosen correction method.

Ethical Concerns When Using a Shock Collar

Dog owners rightfully have concerns about the use of shock collars with their dogs. Proponents of shock collars state that no harm will come to the dog as long as they’re used appropriately, but dogs have been harmed by improper use of shock collars leaving pet parents feeling nervous about employing the corrective method.

The US Humane Society warns that the misuse of shock collars can create anxiety, fear, and aggression in dogs, and most animal advocates consider them inhumane.

If you plan to use the shock correction on your dog, use a collar that has several levels of intensity; you’ll be less likely to harm or frighten your dog. You should also make sure your collar has the ability to use tone and vibration as some dogs will respond to these corrections without the need to use shock at all. It’s also important to properly train your dog so that they know what the tone and vibration warnings mean in order to avoid the static shock mechanism.

    LitterHopper for Litter-Robot 4 Review http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/litterhopper-for-litter-robot-4-review/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/litterhopper-for-litter-robot-4-review/#respond Tue, 01 Jul 2025 15:26:57 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/01/litterhopper-for-litter-robot-4-review/ [ad_1]

Nothing annoys my cat more than when I overfill her litter box—she lets me know she’s displeased by kicking the excess litter out onto the floor. But thanks to the LitterHopper, overfilling (and underfilling) is no longer an issue! The LitterHopper accessory is a litter reservoir compatible with our favorite automatic litter box, the Litter-Robot 4, that eliminates the need for humans to manually refill their kitty’s litter box.

The Spruce Pets wanted to test just how time-saving the LitterHopper is, especially when compared to using the Litter-Robot 4 on its own, so Jazzy the cat and I gave it a go. Here’s the lowdown on the LitterHopper by Whisker.

    Who It’s For

If you own a Litter-Robot 4 or are thinking of buying one, the LitterHopper is a great accessory to consider. However, the LitterHopper is not for everyone—it is only compatible with Litter-Robot 4 and cannot be used separately from the Litter-Robot 4 with other litter boxes.

    How Does the LitterHopper Work?

The LitterRobot is a plastic reservoir that holds and automatically dispenses clean kitty litter when the Litter-Robot 4 is running low. This essentially eliminates the need for humans to manually refill the robot, which my cat is very thankful for. After the Litter-Robot 4 cycles, the machine’s sensors determine whether a litter refill is necessary to keep the litter level at optimal levels.

The great thing about the LitterHopper is that it doesn’t dispense every cleaning cycle—only when the Litter-Robot 4’s litter level drops below optimal. This process cuts down on unnecessary litter waste while keeping your kitty’s potty fresh and clean.

When your LitterHopper is running low, you will get a notification in the Whisker app telling you it may be time to refill. To top off your LitterHopper, simply pinch the lid off and dump your litter of choice in before replacing the lid. That’s it! Your LitterHopper will automatically try to sense and dispense the next time your Litter-Robot 4 cycles.

    Setup: Could be better

One of my favorite things about the Litter-Robot 4 is that it arrives preassembled—no, seriously, the delivery box was huge for this reason. However, to install the LitterHopper, I was tasked with almost entirely disassembling the Litter-Robot 4 with little idea how to put it back together.

If you’re already a Litter-Robot 4 user, make sure you have at least one other litter box in your home so your cats have a potty to use while you’re installing the LitterHopper. Remember: your household should have a litter box for every cat plus one extra.

The LitterHopper requires a brand-new bonnet, so give yourself a minimum of 10-15 minutes to install it. On the contrary, adding the LitterHopper to your Whisker app could not be simpler; I think it took me a total of five seconds.

    Performance: Quiet and reliable

Even though the setup wasn’t a seamless process, the LitterHopper has been smooth-sailing ever since. I haven’t had a single problem or hiccup since installation—no litter clogs, no overdispensing, no problems.

My favorite thing about the LitterHopper is that it is virtually silent. Because it dispenses such a small amount of litter every time, I never hear it. The only way I know it’s in operation is because the app tells me so.

    Capacity: Lots of litter

The LitterHopper holds a total of 13 cups of litter. In a single-cat household like mine, that means I only need to top off the LitterHopper every couple of weeks. However, if you have multiple cats, expect to top off the LitterHopper a little more frequently. Luckily, you never have to eyeball your Litter-Robot 4’s litter level—the app will tell you exactly when it’s time for more.

    Price: A little steep

The LitterHopper retails for around $99, which is a little steep for a plastic accessory. However, the LitterHopper is also a very convenient accessory that I am thankful to have. It saves me time every single week and keeps my cat happy with me, which is the most important aspect of all.

Depending on the retailer, you can buy the Litter-Robot 4 and LitterHopper together in a bundle, which is a great money-saving option for cat owners who don’t already have a Litter-Robot to consider.

    Final Verdict

For Litter-Robot fans, having the LitterHopper is definitely a bonus, especially if you’re a litter box newbie and your cat keeps giving you the side eye every time you refill her litter. The LitterHopper also drastically reduces the amount of time you’re servicing your Litter-Robot 4 every week, meaning you can spend more time with your cat. However, budget-conscious cat owners will be just fine without it.

    FAQ

How do you install the LitterHopper?

To install the LitterHopper, you’ll have to uninstall your existing Litter-Robot bonnet and install the bonnet optimized for the LitterHopper. Instructions for installing the LitterHopper are available online.

Is the LitterHopper compatible with all Litter-Robot models?

No, the LitterHopper is not compatible with all Litter-Robot models. The LitterHopper is only compatible with the Litter-Robot 4.

What type of litter works with the LitterHopper?

The LitterHopper works with most clay and silica-based clumping litters, although clay litter is recommended.

    Litter-Robot 3 Connect Review: Large, but Life-Changing http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/litter-robot-3-connect-review-large-but-life-changing/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/pets-and-animals/litter-robot-3-connect-review-large-but-life-changing/#respond Sat, 14 Jun 2025 07:43:42 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/06/14/litter-robot-3-connect-review-large-but-life-changing/ [ad_1]

We purchased the Litter-Robot 3 Connect so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

If you’ve ever done some research on self-cleaning litter boxes, chances are you’ve come across the Litter-Robot 3 Connect, a smart automatic litter box that looks more like a spaceship than a kitty bathroom. If you hate scooping litter, the Litter-Robot might be just the right device for you. The Litter-Robot is anything but cheap, and if you are going to spend hundreds of dollars on a high-end product, it should work well. So we decided to test the Litter-Robot 3 Connect for ourselves to see if it was really as life-changing as it seemed.

    What We Like

    • Pre-assembled

    • Quiet operation

    • Uses any clumping litter

    • Empty every few weeks

    • Wi-Fi enabled

    • Easy to clean

    • Push notifications

    Setup: Straightforward and seamless

When the Litter-Robot 3 Connect first arrived, we were shocked at the sheer size of the box. It was a box large enough for a kitchen table. The box is so large because the unit comes pre-assembled. All you have to do is hoist the 24-pound unit out of its shipping container, plug it in, and you’re ready to go.

With the Wi-Fi enabled model, there are also a few steps to get it synced with your phone. We downloaded the Litter-Robot app, and it walked us through the necessary steps. The whole process took about five minutes, and we didn’t run into any issues along the way.

The hardest part of the “setup” process was convincing Nugget to climb inside the globe to do his business. Because the Litter-Robot looks nothing like a standard litter box, we weren’t surprised that he was skeptical of what we were asking him to do. The product comes with a short guide on how to acclimate your cat to its new bathroom, and with the coaxing of a few treats, Nugget used the machine for the first time on the first day we set it up.

    Size: Beyond big

An average litter box is fairly compact—personally, our old one was 15 inches by 19 inches with 8-inch walls. The Litter-Robot 3, on the other hand, is absolutely huge. This futuristic-looking gadget is almost 2.5 feet—and it measures just over 2 feet wide and a little over 2 feet deep. Needless to say, if you were hoping to store this litter box in an inconspicuous corner of your home, it would be noticeable.

    Credit:

The Spruce Pets / Camryn Rabideau

The unit’s main globe has a 10.25-inch opening for cats to hop in, and they’ll have to climb up to get there, as the globe sits just over 13 inches off the ground. There is a step to help them get in, but our cat never had any issues jumping into the unit.

    Design: High-tech and well-built

As we mentioned, the Litter-Robot 3 looks more like a futuristic spaceship than a litter box. The brand says cats need to be over 5 pounds to trigger the sensor, but that’s really the only limitation for use. It can be used in single- or multi-cat households, and there’s no maximum weight limit, so chunky kitties should have no problems using the box.

In terms of construction, the Litter-Robot comprises two main pieces: the rotating inner globe and the base. Both are made of heavy-duty plastic. The globe is lined with rubber, and there are sensors inside for your cat to trigger. Once the sensor is set off, the unit counts down a set amount of time. You can choose 3, 7, or 15 minutes via the app before running the cycle. We chose 7 minutes.

    Credit:

     The Spruce / Camryn Rabideau

When it’s time to cycle, the globe starts rotating slowly. Clean litter falls through a sieve into a compartment on one side of the globe, leaving any litter clumps and solid waste behind. The globe continues spinning to drop waste into the base of the unit. According to the manufacturer, this system reduces litter usage by up to 50 percent compared to scooping, making each box of litter last longer.

Once the waste is deposited, the globe then rotates back to its original position—we noticed it actually rotates a bit further than necessary to make sure all the clean litter comes out of the sieve compartment, then returns to its starting position. The noise made during rotation is a quiet hum that’s easily drowned out by ambient noise. We stopped hearing it after a week.

The unit’s base houses the waste drawer, which you can easily pull out and line with plastic bags. Three Litter-Robot bags are included with the unit. When we ran out, we used large shopping bags or trash bags instead. Sensors in the base sent us a push notification when the drawer was full.

In case of malfunction or if you want to trigger the cycle manually, you can use the Cycle and Reset buttons, or you can trigger a cycle via the app. In our experience, the unit worked as expected the majority of the time. The only issue we experienced was when we overfilled the unit with litter. There’s a max-fill line on the rubber globe; if you put too much litter, it can make the globe too heavy to spin.

Litter Options: Clumping is a must

For the Litter-Robot to work, you have to use clumping litter—otherwise, liquid waste won’t be deposited into the base. We tried out two different litter types with the Litter-Robot: Arm & Hammer Double Duty Clumping Litter and Arm and Hammer Clump & Seal Lightweight.

    Credit:

The Spruce Pets / Camryn Rabideau

Both types worked, but the regular weight Arm & Hammer seemed to be a bit more effective. With the lightweight litter, a few clumps stuck to the rubber base that we had to knock off.

Ease of Cleaning: Easy to empty and clean

The Litter-Robot claims to make litter box maintenance a breeze, and we have to agree. When we got a push notification saying the waste drawer was full, all we had to do was pull open the drawer, tie up the bag of waste, and throw it away. From there, we just lined the drawer with a new bag, hit the button to reset the waste gauge level in the app, and that was it. The whole process takes a few minutes, requiring no scooping. The brand says the drawer will need to be emptied around once a week, but we often didn’t get a notification that the drawer was full for 10 days or more.

According to the manufacturer, this system reduces litter usage by up to 50 percent compared to scooping, making each box of litter last longer.

To properly maintain the Litter-Robot, the brand recommends cleaning the inside of the globe every one to three months and giving the unit a deep clean twice a year. Thankfully, the unit breaks down into several easy-to-clean pieces. The “bonnet” is the top piece that holds the globe in place, and it popped off easily when we depressed the two buttons on the side. The globe and waste drawer also come out and can be rinsed with a garden hose or soaked in soapy water.

You shouldn’t get any of the electrical components wet, so keep water away from the base and bonnet and make sure the pieces are dry before reassembling.

Odor Prevention: Stinky after a week

The one area where the Litter-Robot 3 falls a bit flat is odor prevention. There’s a carbon filter on the inside of the waste drawer, but it doesn’t do a great job neutralizing odors. If we let the drawer accumulate waste for more than a week, it begins to smell, which was frustrating as the drawer wasn’t full yet. The brand doesn’t claim that it will eliminate odors. The manufacturer says, “The amount of odor control the Litter-Robot will provide depends on the amount of odor created—by how many cats use it, what type of litter you use, and your cats’ diets, among other things.”

As a remedy for the odor, we ended up putting a box of baking soda in the front of the drawer, which helped increase the amount of time we could go between empties. The brand recommends replacing the carbon filter every few months.

Additional Features: Sleep mode, night light, and more

The high-tech Litter-Robot has various additional features, some of which we found useful and others that we could have lived without. For instance, there’s a blue night light inside the globe that you can turn on or off, but since cats have excellent night vision, we really didn’t understand the purpose of it.

One useful feature is the 8-hour sleep mode, which stops the unit from cycling at night. We can see this as helpful if the litter box is in your room, disturbing you as you sleep. However, we opted to leave it off since the Litter-Robot was in the office. You can also lock the buttons on the front of the unit if you have pets or children who like to press them.

The Litter-Robot app tracks the number of times it cycles each day, and it creates graphs of weekly and monthly trends. This can help spot medical issues such as UTIs.

    Price: Prohibitive

The Litter-Robot 3 Connect costs a whopping $499, which is way above the average for self-cleaning litter boxes. If you don’t care about the Wi-Fi capabilities, you can get a non-connected unit for $449, but that’s still no bargain. Overall, we think this model is definitely overpriced, but the brand can price its products so high because there are no comparable alternatives available today.

Litter-Robot 3 Connect vs. PetSafe ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box

Another popular self-cleaning litter box is the PetSafe ScoopFree, and this model takes a vastly different approach than the Litter-Robot. The ScoopFree resembles a traditional litter box, but it includes a metal rake that pushes solid waste into its waste trap. While this unit works well and is less expensive than the Litter-Robot, you have to use crystal litter in it, and the cost of its necessary supplies increases the bottom line.

    Final Verdict

Love the product, hate the price.

Unfortunately, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect is so highly-priced, as it’s an awesome product that would benefit many cat owners. If you can afford this $500 litter box, we think you’ll definitely enjoy its hands-off cleaning and various smart features, and the quality construction will serve you and your cats well for years to come.

I’ve had my microchip pet feeders from Sure Petcare for a couple of months now, and while it was a pricey investment, it’s been worth every single penny and has alleviated a ton of stress around my cat’s meals. One of my cats, Sneaky, always wants to eat his brother’s food and has a tendency to be overweight. Separating them for meals just wasn’t working — they would whine at the door and simply not eat enough unless they could eat side by side and have free access to food throughout the day — but I also couldn’t be sure that my younger (and much smaller) cat, Chicho, was eating enough with Sneaky gobbling up part of his meals, too. When my vet started throwing around the word “diabetes” as a very real concern if Sneaky didn’t start sticking to controlled diet every day, I knew I needed to finally cough up the money for microchip feeders — I mean, it’d be a drop in the bucket compared to the longterm cost of cat insulin.

The setup was ridiculously fast, the open-close function works beautifully, and my cats learned how to use these almost immediately. Finally, Sneaky can *only* eat what’s in his feeder, which allows me to control his calorie intake and see exactly how much food he’s eating daily — and I can be sure that Chicho is getting *enough* food, too. This is also a fantastic solution if you have cats on different diets due to health reasons, and if one of them starts eating way less for some reason, you’ll know immediately and be able to report that to your vet. I also love that the feeder comes with both split and regular bowls — I use the split bowls to serve my cats both dry food and wet food at once!

BTW, I have the basic microchip feeder (because it was the only option in stock at the time), but there’s also a Wi-Fi-enabled option that connects to the Sure Petcare app for monitoring eating habits, weighing food portions, and more.

Get it from Amazon for $169.33 (feeder bowls available in four colors).
