We make a lot of stir fry at our house and today I’m here to share our recipe for homemade stir fry sauce. This five minute recipe is so easy to make!

I think being able to make a great stir fry is one of those meals everyone should know—it should be taught in schools as a basic life skill. I love rice, I love noodles and I love using up whatever leftover meats and vegetables are sitting in my fridge.

While yes, you could certainly use a store-bought stir fry sauce I think there’s a lot of value in being able to throw one together from things you likely already have on hand. This easy stir fry sauce recipe is flavorful, slightly sweet and a little bit spicy. It goes great with almost anything you are throwing into your stir fry.

Stir Fry Sauce Ingredients

  • Soy sauce – You can use tradition soy sauce or low sodium or gluten-free.
  • Chicken stock – Or chicken broth.
  • Sesame oil – Adds depth of flavor.
  • Rice vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Garlic – Fresh garlic, minced.
  • Ginger – Fresh ginger, minced.
  • Brown sugar
  • Red pepper flakes – For a little kick.

While this may seem like a lot of ingredients, keep in mind that many of them are either shelf stable or can be stored in the refrigerator for long periods (so you can use them up over time).

How to Make Stir Fry Sauce

In a small- to medium-size mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Whisk together until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Another option is to add all the ingredients to a jar, like a mason jar, with a lid. Then shake well until the sugar has dissolved.

Now you can pour the stir fry sauce over your stir fry mixture while cooking in a large skillet or pan. Store any unused sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. This makes about a cup of sauce (the perfect amount), so I can typically use this recipe twice. But it depends how much stir fry you are making/how big your family is.

Tips & Substitutions

  • Instead of soy sauce, you could use low-sodium soy sauce, liquid aminos or gluten-free soy sauce. 
  • You can substitute vegetable or beef stock for chicken if you prefer. You may also use vegetable broth if you want to make a vegan stir fry sauce. 
  • If you don’t have sesame oil and don’t want to buy it, you can use another cooking oil like olive oil. But, I do think the flavor of the sesame oil adds to this recipe.
  • If you don’t have rice vinegar and don’t want to buy it, you can use apple cider vinegar. I like the sweetness of rice vinegar, but ACV will work well too.
  • Instead of brown sugar, you could use granulated white, honey, or maple syrup. You can also reduce the amount of sugar if you prefer.
  • I don’t feel this sauce needs a thickening agent. However, if you do prefer one, add a teaspoon or two of cornstarch when whisking together.
  • Secret ingredient—many people claim ketchup is the secret ingredient in stir fry sauce. It gives a boost of flavor. I use it in my easy Pad Thai recipe, it’s good! If you try it, start small and let us know what you think. You may also want to reduce the sugar if you add ketchup as the ketchup will add more sweetness.

In what seems to be a tale as old as time, my husband and I have been in a years-long cycle of rotating the same small handful of recipes. While neither of us would self-identify as picky eaters, finding new options that we’re each into has proven to be a tall order—I don’t eat red meat or pork, and he typically doesn’t find a vegetarian-only meal to be satisfying. We also both work full-time and have a toddler and newborn, so we prioritize recipes that are simple and fast.

Meal kits can certainly help with providing the tools to climb out of this rut, but in my experience, they sometimes offer narrow options for pleasing everyone in a house. They can also require more time and make a bigger mess than expected.

But when I recently sought out to try Home Chef, I felt more excited than dubious. I was impressed by the wide weekly menu that not only includes dozens of options catering to different skill levels and estimated preparation times, but allows you to customize many recipes to fit diet specifications. What’s the Home Chef ordering experience?

First, you’ll take a quick quiz that asks you basic questions about what you’re looking for in a meal kit. (Are you looking for a keto-friendly option? Are you vegetarian? Is easy-prep the most important factor to you?) The site then suggests particular meals based on your answers each week, and you can then edit the order to include any of the dozens of other options.

Meals are available in four categories: classic meal kits, express kits that take 30 minutes or less, oven-ready options that you assemble in a provided tin and then pop in the oven, and “Fast & Fresh” microwavable recipes. You can pick a mix of all types for your weekly box.

When scanning through the recipes, I saw that many indicate that they’re customizable, allowing you to add or change the protein listed. For instance, I was interested in trying a quick pork and broccoli stir-fry, but only because I could swap out the pork for ground turkey.

Perhaps this plug-and-play functionality works because most recipes aren’t too complicated. Many feature the formulaic approach of a protein with a vegetable side or a grain-based bowl with a protein and vegetable in some sort of sauce or glaze. I found them tasty, but if you’re looking for a cooking adventure, that’s something to keep in mind.

You can also customize how many meals you want in each shipment; if you select three meals one week, you can still order five for the following. And within each box, you can adjust the portion size to two, four, or six servings for each meal. So, maybe only two people will be having the steak flatbread on Tuesday, but four people will be home for the mushroom gnocchi on Thursday. Home Chef lets you design your week flexibly.

Each recipe also lists the expected time window you should allot from prep to first bite, along with the full instructions, so you know exactly what you’re getting into from the start. (Not all meal kits list the full recipes online.)

What to expect from a Home Chef box

My Home Chef Box arrived at my door in a recyclable insulated box with two ice packs at the bottom to keep the ingredients cold. Those ingredients were individually packaged in their own large plastic bags by recipe, and all raw protein was in a separate plastic bag. Everything was labeled, making it easy to get organized ahead of starting a meal.

The box also included a Home Chef binder to house all recipe cards from this shipment and those in the future. For that reason, recipe cards come three-hole punched.

How are Home Chef’s ingredients?

Home Chef doesn’t guarantee any of its produce or protein to be organic, but you can opt to customize a number of meals with organic chicken (this might come with an upcharge, depending on the recipe). You’re also expected to supply your own oil, salt, and pepper.

The summer has me wanting to enjoy spicy foods with an icy cold beer, a cool glass of wine, or a frosty cocktail. Being the wuss that I am, I prefer finger foods and small bites—so I can quickly quell the heat with one of the aforementioned drinks between mouthfuls, which is why these nine spicy shrimp recipes are totally my jam.

Firstly, they’re easy to whip up and don’t require a long list of ingredients. Some, like goong pad nam prik pao (Thai stir-fried shrimp with chile jam) and ebi no chirisōsu (Japanese shrimp in chile sauce), rely on jarred condiments to do the heavy lifting. Best of all, you can dial the heat level up or down to suit your spice tolerance—go ahead and toss in a few more bird’s-eye chiles (seeds and all) if you like things fiery. And don’t be surprised if these dishes have you licking every last bit of sauce off your plate and fingers!

Why It Works

  • Squeezing the cooked spinach removes excess liquid, keeping the raita thick. 
  • Chilling the raita for at least 30 minutes gives the flavors time to meld.

In the US, cucumber raita gets all the attention—it’s the version you’ll find on nearly every Indian restaurant menu in the States—but it’s just one of many variations. In Indian cooking, the yogurt-based side can be made with just about anything. Raw vegetables, such as tomatoes, onions, and carrots, are common, as are cooked ones, such as potatoes, pumpkin, beets, and spinach. My grandmother often made hers with fried okra or bitter gourd. In northern India, there’s even a version that swaps out the vegetable component with bundi—little deep-fried chickpea balls. The crispy morsels are added to the seasoned yogurt just before serving, maintaining the bundi’s crunch against the yogurt’s silkiness.

Of the many variations, palak raita is one of my favorites. Steamed spinach is combined with cooling yogurt, finely chopped onions, salt, a bit of sugar, earthy cumin, and a touch of fruity Kashmiri chile powder. Cooking the spinach on the stovetop with some water encourages gentle steaming, helping it wilt quickly and evenly without scorching. You can also steam it in the microwave in a covered bowl—just be cautious when removing the lid to avoid being burnt by a burst of hot steam (when working with steaming ingredients, always open lids on the side away from your face). It’s easy and quick to put together, and can even be made a day ahead for added convenience.

For the ultimate palak raita, squeeze the cooked spinach thoroughly. Its high water content can dilute the yogurt, leading to a loose texture and muted flavor. After combining all the ingredients, let the raita chill for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

This cool and creamy spinach raita delivers balanced and beautifully contrasting flavors and textures—spinach adds a subtle earthiness, onion brings crunch, cumin warms it up, and a touch of chile keeps things lively. A final scattering of cilantro brings a fresh, herbal lift to the dish. It’s the perfect accompaniment to bold and spicy main dishes, such as grilled meats and spiced dal. It’s also great tucked next to a scoop of rice. Don’t be surprised if it quietly replaces your go-to cucumber raita.

The 15-Minute Yogurt Sauce to Serve With Everything This Summer



Cook Mode
(Keep screen awake)

  • 6 ounces baby spinach (170 g; about 6 lightly-packed cups)

  • 2 cups strained (Greek-style) whole-milk yogurt (16 ounces; 454 g)

  • 1/2 medium white or red onion (4 ounces; 113 g), finely chopped

  • 1 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt, plus more to taste; for table salt, use half as much by volume

  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/4 teaspoon Kashmiri chile powder, optional (see notes)

  • 2 tablespoons (5 g) finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves and tender stems, optional

  1. In a large saucepan, add spinach and 2 cups (480 ml) water and cook, covered, over medium heat, until spinach is wilted, 5 to 8 minutes. (Alternatively, you can microwave spinach with 1 cup water in a covered microwave–safe bowl until wilted, 1 to 5 minutes).

  2. Transfer spinach to a colander to drain, then rinse with cold water until cool to the touch. Using hands, firmly squeeze spinach to release liquid until only a few drops remain. Transfer spinach to cutting board and roughly chop; set aside. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine yogurt, onion, salt, sugar, cumin, and chile powder, if using; whisk until well combined.

  3. Add reserved chopped spinach to bowl with yogurt. Stir well to combine. Season with salt to taste. Cover and refrigerate raita until chilled and flavors meld, 30 minutes or up to 24 hours.

  4. When ready to serve, transfer raita to large serving bowl and top with cilantro, if using.

This recipe can be easily doubled, if desired.

Kashmiri chile powder, available at Indian grocery stores or online, has a moderate heat and a slightly fruity flavor, along with a signature vibrant red color. If you can’t find it, use sweet paprika with a pinch of cayenne as a substitute. 

Make-Ahead and Storage

The cooked, drained, and squeezed-out spinach can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 1 day before finishing raita. 

Palak raita can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Are you even ready for this? What we have here is like an egg roll filling (meat, cabbage, carrots, soy sauce, garlic, ginger) meets a fried little taco (flour tortilla, fresh veg on top, gochujang sauce for serving) and the whole thing eats a lot like a folded sandwich.

That’s going to be a big yes from me.

My friend Brandon has been telling me about these for weeks. I know the whole idea of meat smashed into tortillas is really having a moment on social media (smash burger tacos, chicken Caesar smash tacos, etc.), but the concept has always seemed a little strange to me.

Until I tried these ones – and now I’m a believer.

Besides being super yummy (don’t skip the gochujang sauce it is DIVINE on there) – these are shockingly easy to make. I know some of the recipes in the last SOS series leaned a little more towards “involved” than I normally do – there were some extras that I just couldn’t let go of. Shallot crispies, panko breading, house sauce, etc. So let’s think of this as a BONUS SOS recipe. You can easily make this in 20 minutes without breaking a sweat.
