Netflix’s new adaptation, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, has proven itself to be more than worthy of its namesake so far. Just yesterday, the streamer premiered all eight episodes of the first season of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, which stars Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as the titular Sam Fisher. Reviews for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch have been pouring in over the last few days, and enough scores have come in that the animated series has earned a strong 88% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This comes from a small sample size of only 8 reviews at the time of writing, so it is subject to change. It’s also tied with The Hunt for Red October at 88% as the highest-rated Tom Clancy adaptation ever.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch was written and created for TV by Derek Kolstad, with other scribes such as David Daitch, Katie J. Stone, Anthony Florez, Fallon O’Dowd, Matias Wulff, Naomi G. Davis, and Joseph Mwamba working in the writer’s room. Félicien Colmet-Daage and Guillaume Dousse directed all eight episodes of the first season of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. Creator Derek Kolstaad is best known for his work writing the first three Keanu Reeves-led John Wick movies. He returned to the action genre recently with his work penning both of Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody films. He’ll reunite with Odenkirk on another action thriller, Normal.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is set in the shadowy world of global espionage, following the legendary Sam Fisher, who is no more than a rumor to most of the intelligence community. Once he’s called back into action, he must work with a new recruit to untangle a global conspiracy. Sam Fisher voice actor, Liev Schreiber, is a nine-time Emmy nominee who is also famous for his work on Spotlight, The Manchurian Candidate, and The Perfect Couple.

What Else Is Popular on Netflix Right Now?

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch has already cracked the Netflix top 10, but it still trails other shows such as Wayward and Boots, which have been juggernauts on streaming charts. Sci-fi fans have also flocked to all three Maze Runner movies, which were recently added to Netflix last weekend and have since taken over the top 10 movies chart. Both seasons of the now-canceled Paramount+ video game adaptation, Halo, have been a revelation on Netflix for a few weeks now. The show’s rejuvenated success has left some questioning if it should have been canceled in the first place.

One of the most unfortunate side effects of the streaming era is an overabundance of options, which sometimes leads to films from major directors slipping through the cracks in terms of pre-release buzz. Last year, Charlie Kaufman wrote the Netflix animated film Orion and the Dark, which was clearly no KPop Demon Hunters. A couple of years before that, Joe Carnahan directed the time-loop action movie Boss Level, featuring Frank Grillo, Michelle Yeoh, Naomi Watts and Mel Gibson. It debuted on Hulu to minimal fanfare. The trend continued this week with the release of Prime Video’s Play Dirty, the new movie directed by Shane Black, starring bona fide A-lister Mark Wahlberg.

It’s Black’s first film as director since The Predator, which was released back in 2018. Black made a name for himself with his self-aware buddy movies in the 1990s, with films such as Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. He made his directorial debut with the cult classic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and followed it up with the $1.3 billion hit Iron Man 3, to which he brought his unique acerbic sensibilities. Black cashed in his black check with another cult hit, The Nice Guys. Each of these movies has its set of fans; many of them were even critically acclaimed.

However, Play Dirty has opened to rather middling reviews. It currently holds a 49% critics’ score, and a slightly lower 46% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. In his review, Collider’s Nate Richard recommended lowering expectations. “If you watch Play Dirty expecting something on the level of The Nice Guys or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, you will be disappointed. However, the latest action-comedy from Black proves that he’s still capable of delivering an equal parts funny and action-heavy comedy with all the trademarks that make us love him as a filmmaker,” he wrote.

Jason Statham Previously Played Wahlberg’s Character

Also starring LaKeith Stanfield, Play Dirty is an adaptation of the “Parker” novels by Richard Stark, with Wahlberg playing the central character. Incidentally, the character was played around a decade ago by Jason Statham, in a film directed by Taylor Hackford. Wahlberg is coming off of a string of forgettable action movies designed for streaming, such as The Union and The Family Plan; he also headlined the theatrical release Flight Risk, which debuted earlier this year. Rebecca Ferguson may have commanded the screen as the Reverend Mother in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies or sniped someone’s head off as the magnetic Ilsa Faust in the Mission: Impossible series, but on Apple TV+ she’s leading an equally gripping story of survival and rebellion. Silo, the dystopian sci-fi series created by Graham Yost, has quietly become one of Apple’s most acclaimed originals — and now, ahead of Season 3, it’s surging back up the streaming charts.

Months after the Season 2 finale, Silo has re-entered Apple TV+’s top 10, sitting at #9 this past week. It’s a rare feat for a series between seasons and shows the growing word-of-mouth traction around the show. Critics have been just as supportive: Season 1 earned an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 climbed even higher to a stellar 94%.

Adapted from Hugh Howey’s bestselling novel trilogy, Silo is set in a future where humanity survives in massive underground silos, sealed off from an outside world deemed uninhabitable. Ferguson stars as Juliette Nichols, an engineer whose investigation into the suspicious death of a colleague sets her on a dangerous path of uncovering the truth about the silo’s origins — and the reality of what lies beyond its walls.

Season 2 pushed the story even further, with Juliette finally glimpsing the barren surface and discovering other silos in the distance. The finale left fans with more questions than answers, setting up a high-stakes continuation.

How Will Silo Finish?

Apple TV+ has already committed to giving Silo a full story arc, with Seasons 3 and 4 on the way. Season 3 has wrapped production, and Season 4 will serve as the conclusion to the saga. Ferguson herself teased that the adaptation is sticking close to the books’ structure:

“I believe that the show has an ending, and I know when that is. So that’s the answer. You will find out when the show is done. To be honest, I don’t think it’s a secret. The books are the books. It’s three books, and the three books are divided into four seasons.”

Jason Statham and action go hand in hand, but when the action flick is topped with some magnificent creatures, it gets even better. So, no doubt, with the audience’s approval, the movie is climbing the streaming charts. Along with Statham as Jonas Taylor, the movie also cast Wu Jing as Jiuming Zhang, Sophia Cai as Meiying, Cliff Curtis as Mac, Page Kennedy as DJ, Sergio Peris Mencheta as Montes, and Skyler Samuels as Jess. Quite a few places, actually. The actor is book and busy as he’s set to star in Jean-François Richet’s Mutiny where he stars opposite Annabelle Wallis and Adrian Lester. Statham is also working on the sequel to The Beekeeper, which David Ayer will produce and will be directed by Nobody 2 helmer Timo Tjahjanto. Furthermore, the actor will reprise Deckard Shaw for Fast X: Part 2.
