Creating a beautiful fall themed display with lights under a cloche.

I’ve been adding fall decor touches around the house over the past few weeks
and have thoroughly enjoyed the process. Our home feels so warm and cozy!

evergreens mixed with fall leaves

So much so, I recreated it again this year!

The evergreens mixed in with the fall colors and leaves is unexpected, but I
LOVE how it works together.

When I was selling some items last year, I decided to sell a large glass
cloche that I’ve had in my decor stash forever. I kept second guessing
getting rid of it though, and I’m so glad I did!

After creating this sweet little fall scene under glass, my mind is
swimming with ideas for the upcoming holidays!

For this quick project, I gathered some fall craft supplies like little
pinecones and acorns:

I pulled a bunch of those off of a fall pick from the craft store. (You’ll
want everything to be pretty small.)

The main display under the glass is a small hops arrangement I’ve had for a
while. I added some soft reindeer moss to tuck everything into on this beautiful green platter:

There are no rules when it comes to a seasonal project like this one, and
the possibilities for the decor details are endless!

three foot battery fairy light

The light strand is only three feet long, so the length was perfect for a
small display like this one. I made sure to leave the switch on the outside
of the glass, you can check that out in the video.

It’s SO pretty and feels like a little woodland world under there!:

fall decor under glass cloche

Our glass cloche is about 12 inches tall and nine inches wide, so it’s
pretty large. This would be lovely in a smaller version too! (Hmmm, I may
have to try that out…)

So much fun! Decorating for the seasons should be enjoyable and spark your
creativity — this one was both for me!

Here’s a list of the items I used (or very similar ones):

Just about everything looks better with lights under glass! 🙂

Step-By-Step DIY Zipper Pillow Cover Tutorial {Save a Ton of $$} | Thrifty Decor Chick http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/step-by-step-diy-zipper-pillow-cover-tutorial-save-a-ton-of-thrifty-decor-chick/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/step-by-step-diy-zipper-pillow-cover-tutorial-save-a-ton-of-thrifty-decor-chick/#respond Fri, 10 Oct 2025 20:52:34 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/10/11/step-by-step-diy-zipper-pillow-cover-tutorial-save-a-ton-of-thrifty-decor-chick/ [ad_1]

Making your own zippered throw pillow covers saves a ton of money, storage space and allows you to make seasonal decor pillows for way less!

I’m back with a project I’ve shared a couple of times…but I like to repeat it because it’s such a GOOD one. Especially for seasonal decorating on the cheap!

Though I’ve shared this before, I don’t think I’ve ever shared a full step-by-step tutorial, so I’m doing that today. I also learned a new trick that I’ll share (along with a video with the best how-to I’ve found).

I love to use cloth napkins to make throw pillow covers, especially when it comes to a certain look — I really love to do it with Pottery Barn napkins to recreate their pillows that are WAY more expensive. I shared how I make pillows with napkins and runners here

I’ve always wanted to learn how to sew a zipper into one of my pillow covers, and finally bit the bullet and figured out how to do it. I am far from perfect on both sewing pillows and the zipper (especially on the zipper 😂), but this is one of those projects that really doesn’t need perfection.

Using pillow covers with zippers allows me to only store a few pillow inserts and the covers take up way less space.

Let’s do this step-by-step, shall we? I finished most of these pillows years ago, but decided to deconstruct those I had finished to add the zippers and then I finished the rest.

Cut your fabric to size

I use very basic (AKA cheap) muslin for the backs of a lot of my DIY pillows. It’s not the strongest fabric in the world but it always holds up fine for me.

If you have kiddos that enjoy pillow fights, you may want to use something a little thicker:

I just laid my napkin on the muslin to figure out the size I needed. You’ll notice I used pinking shears, just because they help prevent the fabric from fraying.
I’ve also used fabric scissors (I recommend using those for ease of cutting) and they still do fine. (If you plan to wash the cover often I’d hem your raw edges or use the pinking shears.)

I recommend making your pillow cover about one inch smaller than your pillow insert for a snug, fluffy fit.

After your two pieces are cut, lay them wrong sides against each other. With a solid fabric this won’t matter as much:

Sew in your zipper

I found an awesome video tutorial for this that I’ll share in a minute. But these are the basic steps.

Lay your zipper down on one edge (if your fabric has a design that has a top and bottom, be sure to put the zipper on the bottom!):

Mark where the zipper needs to be sewn on — keep in mind you don’t want to cover the ends of the zipper too much or it won’t close properly. I marked this with a pencil.

Sew this side of your pillow cover to both pencil marks (on either side) and don’t go any further:

pillows with Pottery Barn napkins

You’ll be left with a long hole in the middle for your zipper.

I found it easier if I ironed the “seam” before working on the rest of the zipper:

ironing a seam on pillow

Lay your zipper on the fabric where you marked with the pencil so it matches to where you ended sewing up the ends. Then sew back and forth over each side of the zipper:

Sew a pillow tutorial with zipper

Make sure the zipper is facing out so you can operate it when the pillow is finished and turned right side out!

This is where it got a little hairy for me. I wasn’t a perfectionist on this part and it’s obvious. 😉

I left the zipper closed and sewed down one side first:

pillow cover with a zipper

I don’t have it pictured here, but I highly recommend pinning your zipper to each side before sewing. Otherwise your line gets a bit wonky. Just pin along the length of the zipper so it results in a clean hem along the zipper.

To do the other side, I undid the zipper and then pinned that other side of the zipper before sewing it in. This will help later because when you close up the pillow you’ll want it open.

Close up your pillow

This is by far the easiest part! If you aren’t using a zipper, making a pillow is one of the easiest DIYs ever. I know many of you are intimidated when using a sewing machine, but if you can get help setting it up (the directions are very helpful too), it’s VERY easy.

If I’m sewing up a pillow without a zipper it only takes a few minutes to make one. Is it perfect? Would I want anyone inspecting my lines? Do I care? NOPE. 😁

Sometimes fabric with stripes are harder because you need to go fairly straight with your sewing. Once you get the hang of it, they are actually a little easier because they give you a guide on keeping that straight line:

sewing a decorative pillow cover

You’ll need to sew up the remaining three sides and you’re almost done!

Finish up small details

Before turning it right side out, I like to trim down the extra fabric and the corners. This just makes it less bulky:

cutting fabric with pinking shears

Turn it right side out and poke the corners out. Trim any random strings (I had a lot when doing the zippers!)

If you like to decorate for holidays and the seasons, you know throw pillows are not cheap. This is such a great way to add some seasonal pillows without spending a ton of money:

DIY fall Pottery Barn pillows

Now that I know how to add a zipper, it will help my pillow insert hoarding problem big time! I’ll only need a few inserts for my seasonal pillows. I also LOVE that I can take these off to clean them now.

I hope my zipper tutorial made sense. If not, be sure to check out this awesome video — it’s by far the best I’ve found.

I bought these Pottery Barn napkins years ago (eight of them) for around $45 I think? I made eight “Pottery Barn” pillows for less than $15 each. Not bad when their most basic pillows sell for $40 and up!

Have you ever made your own pillows? I encourage you to try it out and forget about perfection! You know me — if anyone is ever going to plop down on my couch and find the imperfections in my DIY pillows, they get a cookie. 😉

Of course this napkin trick works well year round — not just for seasonal decorating! If you have any questions, let me know.

Fall Decor Refresh – Julia Berolzheimer http://livelaughlovedo.com/fashion-style/fall-decor-refresh-julia-berolzheimer/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/fashion-style/fall-decor-refresh-julia-berolzheimer/#respond Tue, 07 Oct 2025 02:44:26 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/10/07/fall-decor-refresh-julia-berolzheimer/ [ad_1]

I’ve started shifting our home toward a richer autumn mood, layering textured throws and pillows, refreshing bathrooms  with new towels in deeper tones, and placing vases and fragrant candles throughout the house. Fall-inspired dishware and linens on the table introduce a subtle change of rhythm, while woven baskets and warm accents add depth, creating a refresh that feels both inviting and timeless. Easy Ideas for Decorating With Hydrangeas in Your Fall Decor | Thrifty Decor Chick http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/easy-ideas-for-decorating-with-hydrangeas-in-your-fall-decor-thrifty-decor-chick/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/home-decor/easy-ideas-for-decorating-with-hydrangeas-in-your-fall-decor-thrifty-decor-chick/#respond Fri, 12 Sep 2025 16:25:17 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/09/12/easy-ideas-for-decorating-with-hydrangeas-in-your-fall-decor-thrifty-decor-chick/ [ad_1]

Ideas for how to use beautiful hydrangea stems in your fall decor.

Hydrangeas are one of my absolute favorite flowers, and I think the fall
season is when they are the most beautiful! I’ve used both fresh and
dried hydrangea blooms in my seasonal decor over the years.

This time of year is when they truly shine! Most panicle hydrangeas (more
cone-shaped blooms instead of mop heads) turn a lovely shade of red or pink as
the temps get colder in the autumn months.

Around here, the change from white or green to that blush color is the first
sign that fall is on its way.

I’ve planted so many hydrangea bushes at both this house and our last one.
They are so full and beautiful in our landscaping, but I also love to display
the cut flowers inside throughout the summer and fall.

Just yesterday, as I was decorating the house for the season, I was
contemplating looking for some new faux florals for our front door (say that
three times fast).

And then it hit me…duh! I sometimes forget I have them at my disposal.
🙂

The bonus with this flower is that they are just as pretty when they dry up as
they are freshly cut!

This year I’m using a hanging basket on our front door, and I filled it some
dried blooms for our fall door decor:

Check out my cute creeper in the window. 😂

These large blooms look great just thrown in a basket or bowl as well:

It was the perfect, subtle fall touch.

You don’t need to do anything special to dry your hydrangea blooms. Either
cut and place them in water to enjoy, and then just let the flowers dry out
in the vase:

Or you can simply cut them and place them wherever, they will obviously dry
out quicker this way.

I placed some smaller stems in a bowl yesterday and they still look fresh
today:

By tomorrow they will start to dry up. There’s no water in that bowl, just
some moss I had in there from spring.

I tucked the stems into the moss in the bowl:

One of my absolute favorite fall mantels was the simplest:

simple fall mantel hydrangeas

The soft blush and green blooms were particularly striking against the white
backdrop.

These were from a bush at our old house and were gorgeous enough without
going crazy with decor:

I have an old glass cloche that I wanted to utilize in our fall decor this
year, so I grabbed some
wet floral foam and cut off a small piece:
cut wet floral foam
And just tucked some smaller stems into the foam. I pushed the whole thing into the cloche and then filled in around the
glass edge with
some soft reindeer moss
hydrangeas under glass cloche

I was worried the wet foam would leave condensation on the inside of the
glass, but so far so good! I’ll be interested to see how long these stay
fresh.

I think these gorgeous flowers are best enjoyed piled high and full!

I love
adding them around the house. They make it look like I did way more work than
I actually did. 🙂
