Women Who Travel Book Club: 9 New Books to Dive Into This Summer http://livelaughlovedo.com/women-who-travel-book-club-9-new-books-to-dive-into-this-summer/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/women-who-travel-book-club-9-new-books-to-dive-into-this-summer/#respond Sat, 05 Jul 2025 21:43:43 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/06/women-who-travel-book-club-9-new-books-to-dive-into-this-summer/ [ad_1]

Notes to John is a poignant, intimate collection of 46 journal entries Joan Didion wrote as addressed to her late husband, John Gregory Dunne, between 2000 and 2001. Published posthumously, it offers an unvarnished look at Didion’s struggles—especially her grief over the death of her daughter, Quintana, and her attempts to come to terms with both her daughter’s addiction issues and her own loss. These entries, raw and unpolished, were left in a filing cabinet, as though meant to be found, giving them an exposing sense of being private yet exposed.

The mix of first- and second-person perspectives throughout the entries feels less like self-reflection and more like conversations with Dunne, blurring the line between personal journal and letter. For Didion fans, especially those like me who found relatability and solace in her Blue Nights, the book provides a deeper, more candid view of her ongoing reckoning with love, loss, and grief. It’s both a comfort and a violation, a sacred intimacy that can feel selfish to read. Still, it had me hooked and felt like an important read for anyone seeking to understand the heart of Didion’s world. —Jessica Chapel, commerce writer

Book recommendation of the week: Far and Away, by Amy Poeppel. A family in Dallas and a family in Berlin swap homes for the summer, then find their lives intertwining in unexpected ways. Funny and sweet, and I am already missing many of these characters. (Amazon, Bookshop)

Love List Summer 2023 http://livelaughlovedo.com/love-list-summer-2023/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/love-list-summer-2023/#respond Wed, 18 Jun 2025 07:43:59 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/06/18/love-list-summer-2023/ [ad_1]

Summer is finally upon us and we’re stoked! To celebrate the season of sunshine, our team put together this fun Love List filled with our current favorite shows, books, self-care items, accessories, summertime must-haves and more. We hope you enjoy and find something you love ❤. Happy Summer!

TV Shows

Succession ~ Max

If you’re not watching this series, now in its fourth season, you should be. Reportedly based on the real-life media-mogul Murdoch family, this series is equal parts drama and dark comedy. Though I can’t say I find any of the characters particularly likable, the ever-changing dynamics, alliances and hierarchy among them is fascinating and intriguing.

BEEF ~ Netflix

What happens when road rage turns into a complete manic-obsessive spiral? Watch BEEF to find out. As it explores anger, depression and humanity in all its flaws and glories, this limited series is nerve-jangling, amusing and heart-warming all at once. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are absolutely phenomenal — as is the soundtrack.

Books

The Unlikely Village of Eden ~ $17

This touching and raw memoir by Emma Nadler details her journey in caring for her child, Eden, born with an incredibly rare genetic condition. This book is perfect for all parents and caregivers; it’s a beautiful reminder that life doesn’t always (or perhaps ever?) go to plan, and that it’s okay (necessary, even) to lean on your village, and ask for and accept help.

Demon Copperhead ~ $18

Kingsolver’s powerful storytelling delves into the neglected corners of present-day Appalachian Mountains, where Damon Fields, nicknamed Demon Copperhead, navigates a challenging life from foster care placements that resemble work camps. The novel portrays Demon’s unwavering resilience as he faces hunger, cruelty, loss, and the devastating impact of the OxyContin epidemic, all while maintaining his profound love for his homeland.

Self-Care

Iris&Romeo Best Skin Days SPF

An SPF that also gives you a youthful glow? Yes, please. Best Skin Days has become a staple in my morning skincare routine. I love the slightly whipped feel of the lotion, and my skin is left looking dewy and healthy.

Ceremonia Gave Beach Waves

Beach waves on fleek. This salt texture spray by Ceremonia is giving summer.

LumaGlow LED Light Therapy Wand ~ $124

The LumaGlow LED Light Therapy Wand is a game-changer for skincare enthusiasts. Its compact design and versatile functionality make it easy to incorporate into your beauty routine. The wand’s red and blue light therapy targets acne, fine lines, and wrinkles, leaving the skin looking radiant and rejuvenated.

Kids

Kizik sneakers ~ $69

Got an independent tot on your hands? Kizik shoes have a hands-free design that makes it easy for children to put them on and take them off without any grownup help — the transition out the door has never been easier. My kids have been wearing them every day for a year, and they’re still as good as new!

Rockin’ BLINKS PJs

Made from Pima Cotton, Rocking’ BLINKS sleepwear is so buttery soft, you’ll wish the PJs came in adult sizes. Each set, which are all gender neutral, come with a card with specific sleeping information to help you understand sleep (and its challenges) at your child’s age. The company was founded by Lola Sanchez Liste, sleep consultant, mom of two and Charlene’s neighbor. 😉

Clothes & Accessories

Garnet Hill Asian Wrap Organic Shortie PJs ~ $69

Soft as butter and 100% organic cotton, these Asian-wrap PJs are my go-to for staying cool at night this summer. These PJs are super high-quality and last forever.

Lucy & Yak Jumpsuits ~ $varies

There’s never a better time than summer to add a little pop of color to your wardrobe. Lucy & Yak jumpsuits are a delightful blend of style, playfulness, comfort, and sustainability. Plus, we love their inclusive sizing, which ensures a perfect fit for everyone. The kind of item you’ll keep reaching for again and again.

Koolaburra (by Ugg) sandals ~ $65

Want to feel like you’re walking on clouds? Then slip these on your feet. No, I’ve never walked on clouds, but if I did — I assure you this is what it would feel like. Soooo comfortable and super cute to boot, these Koolaburra sandals will be your new summertime favs. Trust me.

Scala Visor ~ $32

Protect your face from the sun while keeping your mom bun. This visor from Scala has an adjustable velcro enclosure and wide coverage… and dare we say, is stylish?

Sezane Baskets ~ $varies

Baskets and woven bags are all the rage this year, and we are loving it. So get your picnic chic on for all your outings – kids or no kids. We love the selection at French brand Sezane.

Pepper Strapless Bra ~ $60

Small-chested women know the struggle of finding a strapless bra that fits. Enters Pepper, a bra company that caters specifically to small breasts. This bra is supportive, comfortable and lifting. If you need a little more support, try this Meg-approved wireless bra.

Beach & Summer Essentials

CoolCabanas Beach Tent ~ $190

We’ve had our CoolCabanas tent for two years now. It’s held up really nicely and makes us feel like we’re part of an exclusive beach club. Plus, when the wind picks up, we’re the only ones whose tent doesn’t go flying all over the place.

JBL Clip 3 Speaker ~ $50

Bring the party to your day trips at the beach. This portable speaker is waterproof and you can clip it on your beach bag or backpack to keep it secure.

Supergoop Lip Screen ~ $22

Don’t forget to protect your lips this summer against harmful sun rays. We like how light the Supergroup lip screen feels when applying.

Yeti Can Insulator ~ $25

You know that feeling when you take a sip of your seltzer only to realize it’s warm and completely flat? Get yourself a Yeti insulator so you never encounter that problem ever again. You’re welcome.

Outdoor Illuminated Sphere ~ starts at $32

These LED globes are so unique and a great way to brighten up any space. Put them on your patio, in your garden, by the pool… and wait for the compliments to roll in!

That’s it! Let us know if there’s anything else YOU can’t live without during the summer months.

Cheers!

10 Queer Travel Books to Read This Summer 2025: Inspiring Journeys for LGBTQ+ Adventurers

By Mateo Ruiz – Adventure Travel Explorer

As I rumbled down the dusty roads of a national park in my recently converted van last summer, passport stamps from over 30 countries tucked away in my glove compartment, I cracked open a queer travel book that transported me even further than my off-grid escapades. There’s something magical about diving into stories that blend wanderlust with authentic LGBTQ+ experiences— they remind us that exploration isn’t just about destinations, but about embracing our true selves along the way. If you’re craving queer travel books to fuel your summer 2025 reading list, you’re in the right place. These pages are packed with continent-spanning adventures, heartfelt memoirs, and road trips that celebrate queer resilience and joy. Whether you’re lounging on a beach or planning your next getaway, these queer travel books will ignite your spirit and perhaps even inspire your own epic journey.

Why Queer Travel Books Are Essential Summer Reading

In a world where travel can sometimes feel exclusionary, queer travel books shine a light on diverse perspectives that make exploration more inclusive and exciting. They go beyond guidebooks, weaving in personal triumphs, cultural insights, and the thrill of discovery. As someone who’s backpacked through hidden gems and chased sunsets in my van, I love how these narratives challenge norms and spark conversations. This summer, with rising interest in authentic storytelling (did you know LGBTQ+ literature sales have surged 20% in recent years?), it’s the perfect time to add these queer travel books to your stack. They’ll not only entertain but also empower you to see the world through a vibrant, multifaceted lens.

The Transformative Power of Queer Stories on the Road

Queer travel books often highlight resilience in the face of adversity, turning journeys into metaphors for self-acceptance. From my own experiences converting my van for solo trips across rugged terrains, I’ve learned that travel amplifies our identities. These books do the same, offering roadmaps for navigating both literal and emotional landscapes. If you’re seeking motivation for your next adventure, start here—these tales will have you booking tickets in no time.

1. Edge of the World: An Anthology of Queer Travel Writing by Alden Jones (Editor)

Kick off your queer travel books list with this fresh 2025 anthology that gathers essays from LGBTQ+ writers worldwide. From embracing queerness on a Phnom Penh riverboat to savoring summer in Granada, it’s a mosaic of voices that feels like a global conversation. Perfect for dipping in and out during lazy afternoons, this collection reminds me of my own passport-filling escapades. Grab it for its raw, idiosyncratic charm—the exact one I keep in my van for inspiration.

2. Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin

A timeless classic among queer travel books, Baldwin’s novel follows David and Giovanni’s passionate romance in 1950s Paris. Exploring themes of identity and desire amid the city’s iconic streets, it’s a poignant reminder of how travel can unravel our inner worlds. As I reflect on my van life conversions and border-crossing thrills, this story resonates deeply—it’s a must-read for understanding postwar queer disillusionment.

3. Are You Listening? by Tillie Walden

This graphic novel queer travel book takes you on a haunting road trip through West Texas with protagonists Bea and Lou. As they return a lost cat, secrets unfold against stunning landscapes. Walden’s artwork captures the essence of American highways, much like my national park hikes—visually immersive and emotionally raw.

Spanning centuries, this queer travel book follows Orlando’s gender-fluid adventures, including time in Constantinople (modern Istanbul). Woolf’s playful prose on transformation and exploration mirrors the fluidity of my own travel tales from 30+ countries. A literary gem that’s currently 20% off on Amazon—run and add it to your cart!

5. Nevada by Imogen Binnie

In this punk-infused queer travel book, Maria Griffiths embarks on a chaotic road trip from New York to Nevada after heartbreak. Binnie’s sharp take on trans experiences and self-discovery feels like a gritty companion to my off-grid van nights. It’s raw, philosophical, and utterly compelling.
