Creating a beautiful fall themed display with lights under a cloche.

I’ve been adding fall decor touches around the house over the past few weeks
and have thoroughly enjoyed the process. Our home feels so warm and cozy!

evergreens mixed with fall leaves

So much so, I recreated it again this year!

The evergreens mixed in with the fall colors and leaves is unexpected, but I
LOVE how it works together.

When I was selling some items last year, I decided to sell a large glass
cloche that I’ve had in my decor stash forever. I kept second guessing
getting rid of it though, and I’m so glad I did!

After creating this sweet little fall scene under glass, my mind is
swimming with ideas for the upcoming holidays!

For this quick project, I gathered some fall craft supplies like little
pinecones and acorns:

I pulled a bunch of those off of a fall pick from the craft store. (You’ll
want everything to be pretty small.)

The main display under the glass is a small hops arrangement I’ve had for a
while. I added some soft reindeer moss to tuck everything into on this beautiful green platter:

There are no rules when it comes to a seasonal project like this one, and
the possibilities for the decor details are endless!

three foot battery fairy light

The light strand is only three feet long, so the length was perfect for a
small display like this one. I made sure to leave the switch on the outside
of the glass, you can check that out in the video.

It’s SO pretty and feels like a little woodland world under there!:

Our glass cloche is about 12 inches tall and nine inches wide, so it’s
pretty large. This would be lovely in a smaller version too! (Hmmm, I may
have to try that out…)

So much fun! Decorating for the seasons should be enjoyable and spark your
creativity — this one was both for me!

Here’s a list of the items I used (or very similar ones):

Just about everything looks better with lights under glass! 🙂

How To Add Easy, Affordable Accent Lighting {Almost} Anywhere | Thrifty Decor Chick http://livelaughlovedo.com/how-to-add-easy-affordable-accent-lighting-almost-anywhere-thrifty-decor-chick/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/how-to-add-easy-affordable-accent-lighting-almost-anywhere-thrifty-decor-chick/#respond Thu, 21 Aug 2025 03:30:20 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/21/how-to-add-easy-affordable-accent-lighting-almost-anywhere-thrifty-decor-chick/ [ad_1]

An easy and affordable way to add functional accent lighting around the house.

First of all, I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your comments on my recent life update post! They meant the world to me.

It’s been a lot different around here over the last few days, but we are hanging in there. I’m looking forward to keeping my mind and hands busy with many upcoming projects!

One that I recently finished up was this simple lighting DIY — this is such an inexpensive and simple way to add accent fun lighting anywhere in your house!

Not only is it functional, but there are so many fun settings that add quite the “vibe” (as the kids say) to a space.

basement bar DIY build

This space functions SO WELL for us and we absolutely love it!

There’s not much I would change…only very minor things really, and I plan to address those soon.

One I couldn’t figure out was better lighting on that back wall:

TV and shelf above bar sink

As we started using the space more, I noticed that we needed more light when washing dishes or prepping food on the countertop.

We have plenty of accent lighting in the room as well as recessed ceiling lights, but that sink area was dark.

chargeable modern black sconces on wall

They work great and the charge lasts a really long time. We use the included remote to set them to turn off on a timer, so we never forget to leave them on.

They add a bit of pretty ambience down there, which we love. But it still wasn’t giving me the task lighting I wanted.

I considered having a ceiling light installed above the sink, but I knew the air vent would interfere with that. We have a plug behind the TV, so a plug in light would have worked, but we don’t have any room to hang one above the TV.

16 foot Govee strip lights review
This is not sponsored, I just love this brand and have used them all over the house. I used a very similar product to  add DIY under and upper cabinet lights to our last kitchen as well.

The lighting strips are primarily on the TVs around our home. They have an adhesive back that you just stick to the back of the TV. It’s great, customizable mood lighting:

DIY accent lighting behind flat screen

I love that they can be operated with the switch or with the Govee app on your phone.

I find the app to be easiest. If we’re having a party, I can turn on all of the light strips in the house in just a few taps:

There are SO many ways to customize these, beyond just accent lighting! They are so fun…I’ll touch on a few ideas later in the post.

For this project I measured the length that I needed, which included the nearby wall cabinets that I had already run a set of lights under:

under cabinet lighting wall cabinets

I removed those lights (I plan to use them somewhere else) and then measured the space under the cabinets as well as the long length of that shelf above the sink:

fake DIY brass gallery rail

The light strips couldn’t be easier to install. You just take the paper off the adhesive on the back of the lights and then stick them to the surface:

Govee light installation under shelf

These stick very well, and once in place won’t fall. You can adjust them a bit, but I try to get them placed right the first time so they don’t lose any adhesive.

The placement doesn’t have to be perfect! You won’t ever see these, due to the nature of how they’re utilized.

The lights were up and working within minutes, and we LOVED it! They added so much light to this area:

Govee strip lights under shelf

You may notice the only (minor) issue in that pic.

Because the strip is made up of a bunch of individual lights, we could see each one when sitting across the room. The individual lights can also reflect onto walls or surfaces, instead of looking like one band of soft light.

It doesn’t really bother me, but our son said it needed to be addressed. 😂 I did think it would look a little more finished if they were hidden, so I took a trip to the hardware store for some decorative trim.

I found this pretty molding at Lowe’s, and attached it to the front of the shelf with wood glue and my nail gun:

nailing decorative trim to front of shelf

When that was dry, I painted the trim to match the shelf and cabinets:

detailed trim molding along shelf

I’m so glad I added that little detail — it looks like it always should have been there.

Now we don’t see the light strip or the individual light modules (at least nearly as much) underneath the shelf:

color LED lighting under bar shelf

The bonus is that the LED lights use way less power than traditional incandescent light bulbs, and the tiny bulbs on strips last forever.

You can do SO many things with these light strips!

Here are a few Govee light options and details:

  • You can pick any color under the sun, down to very specific hues of each color.
  • The lights are segmented, so the color of each can be customized to what you want. You could create rainbow lighting, red white and blue, holiday colors, whatever!
  • The brightness is completely customizable as well.
  • A timer can be set if you would like them to turn on and off at certain times of the day. I’ve actually used our bedroom Govee lights as an “alarm” on dark winter mornings. I set it to “sunrise” colors and have it turn on and then gradually lighten to the full brightness. (Waking to the soft “daylight” is so much more soothing and works better than any alarm I’ve used!)
  • Many of these light strips have an option that “dances” to music.
  • If you are installing these behind something and want softer light, these plastic diffusers work great to soften the individual lights on the strips.
  • They offer these lights in TONS of lengths and materials. You can even install some options outside.
  • Some of their options can be cut down (there’s a place to cut every foot or so), or with the proper tools can be cut and then wired to the next set. (Where there’s a break in cabinets, for example.)
  • The Govee strips can be installed anywhere you have an outlet nearby — under cabinets, shelving, furniture, behind molding…the possibilities are endless!

I took this pic with the lights off in the room so you can see how much light it gives us!:

This is at the brightest setting, but it can be dimmed at the touch of a button.

Now this is the main light we have on in there when we’re in the basement. It’s such a cool vibe and isn’t jarring or overwhelming when we’re watching TV.

These are a very fun addition but are also incredibly functional too! If you’re looking for additional task or accent lighting, they are an easy and affordable DIY option.

Have you used LED strip lighting like these in your home?

How I’ve Transitioned Our Farmhouse Decor {On a Budget} | Thrifty Decor Chick http://livelaughlovedo.com/how-ive-transitioned-our-farmhouse-decor-on-a-budget-thrifty-decor-chick/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/how-ive-transitioned-our-farmhouse-decor-on-a-budget-thrifty-decor-chick/#respond Wed, 02 Jul 2025 01:25:02 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/02/how-ive-transitioned-our-farmhouse-decor-on-a-budget-thrifty-decor-chick/ [ad_1]

Replacing our farmhouse style decor and furniture without spending a ton of money!

It’s inevitable that your design preferences will change over time, and it can get really expensive to replace furniture and decor with new items.

I’ve been experiencing that over the past few years…craving more traditional touches over some of the farmhouse design pieces I’ve added to our home in the past.

I actually quite like many of the design aspects of farmhouse decor — wood ceiling beams, open shelves and yes, even shiplap walls! (Fitting that we just talked about that one.)

But overall I’ve been making an effort to transition some of our farmhouseish items to more traditional decor that will stand the test of time.

I’ve tweaked most of these for very little money — with equal parts patience/online stalking and DIY projects. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier with our home!

Large living room chandelier.

When we built our house eight years ago, the huge “wagon wheel” chandeliers were all the rage.

I actually did like them (and still do) — if you have a really tall ceiling or need a large fixture, these fill up the visual space nicely without becoming overwhelming:

Plus they put off great light!

As much as I like the light, I see it everywhere, most often in farmhouse style decor. But I definitely didn’t want to spend the money to replace it.

round chandelier with black gold shades

I got up on the ladder (did I mention I’m terrified of heights?) and popped them onto each bulb. Easiest transformation ever, except for the 14 feet off the ground part!

The pretty gold tone inside the shades adds such a warm glow at night!:

Obviously the shades also diffuse the light a bit, which is fine when you have 12 bulbs. 🙂

I spent $60 on the shades (there are six in an order)…instead of paying for a new light fixture and the installation.

Dining room buffet makeover.

Earlier this year I took on what I thought was going to be a super quick painting project on the cane buffet table in our dining room.

I bought this from a friend’s decor shop years ago and liked that it’s such a solid piece. I really loved the cane doors as well:

light wood cane buffet table

It fit in perfectly with our decor back then. I wouldn’t say this one is blatantly farmhouse style (none of these items are), but the wood tone and rustic finishes leaned that way.

So what I thought was going to be an easy paint job turned into about a week of work. The new, rich wine paint color made the biggest difference, but I also added some trim to the front of the cane doors.

This is up there with some of my all time favorite furniture makeovers.

I love how it turned out!:

The total cost for this project was well under $50 for the trim and corner pieces. I had the paint leftover from another room makeover.

Secondhand find for the dining room.

There were a few other details in the space that had a bit of a farmhouse feel as well. Years ago I changed out the rustic mirror (I moved it to our guest room):

farmhouse decor dining room

I found a large round mirror from Ikea (pictured with the new paint color above) to replace it.

These changes happened over many years, and the room was thisclose to looking as I had envisioned for such a long time. The only remaining item with a farmhouse look was our planked wood dining table:

wood planked farmhouse table

The spaces in between the wood planks drove me a little crazy, because food would get stuck in there. But otherwise it was a beautiful and sturdy table — it just didn’t fit the space anymore.

I sat on it for a long time, considering trying to change up the metal “X” legs to transform the base. Overall the wood top was looking out place the most.

So I started stalking Facebook Marketplace, as one does. It took several months, but I finally found THE ONE:

traditional wood table warm dining room

The darker wood tone and traditional rolled legs fit so much better in this room and the rest of our house. I absolutely love it. Definitely my best home decor find ever!

From farmhouse to traditional in the foyer.

This next update was in our foyer and involves a piece of furniture I’ve loved for years — this Everett console table
Everett farmhouse table in foyer

It’s SO popular, because it really is a lovely piece. I just envisioned something more substantial, with richer wood tones in that spot.

Once the idea of a great transformation creeps into my brain, it’s hard to let go of it!

Thankfully my desire to save money usually wins out over my impatience. I looked on Marketplace here and there but couldn’t find what I wanted.

Finally the idea came to me…we should try moving a dresser we already had (in our son’s room) down to the entryway.

(He likes a more modern look better anyway, so we replaced this wood dresser with an old Ikea one from his closet.)

As soon as we placed the wood dresser in the foyer, I was giddy. It was perfect!:

I believe there’s a few sizes available, this is the smallest.

It’s SO pretty and unique. I absolutely love it!:

small bubble ball light fixture

I sold our old fixture so that ended up paying for a good portion of the new light.

All of the changes added up to under $300, and I think they made a BIG difference! I love all of these transformations and I’m so thrilled with the character and charm they add to our home.

Hopefully these ideas will give you ideas as your decor style changes over time. You really don’t need to buy all new to refresh your home.

Consider what you have and how you can change it or move it around to better suit your new style! Don’t forget to check out online sales and thrift stores as well.
