I’ve been traveling full-time for a decade now and, naturally, I have gone through my fair share of neck pillows—from cheap, inflatable airport pillows to U-shaped memory foam neck pillows. Despite trying just about every travel pillow on the market, there’s only one that has truly brought me comfort on long-haul flights, and it also happens to be the most compact.

I have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), a condition marked by pressed nerves and blood vessels in the upper back. This continuous compression usually causes me to suffer bouts of debilitating pain after long-haul flights. Most recently, I used this pillow on a 13.5-hour flight from Madrid, Spain, to Santiago, Chile. But if my carry-on is stuffed to the max, I just wrap it around the bag’s strap, so it virtually takes up no space. This also makes it easier to quickly grab during the hustle and bustle of boarding, before I set my carry-on bag in the overhead bin. Another great feature is that it’s super easy to clean; I wash it after every single flight. Simply remove the quick-drying fleece wrap covering and throw it in the washing machine when necessary.

You’ll never catch me traveling on a bus, train, plane, or long car ride again without my Trtl Neck Pillow. I love it so much, in fact, that I’ve taken an Uber back home from the airport in order to retrieve it after I left it behind, risking my ability to board my flight from Uruguay to Spain on time.

Sorry, not sorry: I’m “that” person who usually refuses to switch seats on flights (especially when I have the window seat). And even with recent headlines inspiring online debates on whether or not it’s okay to ask to switch seats with someone, I’m still a staunch supporter of staying in my assigned seat, specifically when I’ve paid to be in it.

When I’m in the window seat, the roar of the plane’s engines is usually enough to drown out any conversations happening in other rows. I always make sure to have a pair of noise-cancelling earbuds or headphones juiced up and ready to go, so I can tune out background noise—regardless of what seat I end up in.

I wanted a bag for some upcoming travel (2.5 weeks in Europe with *just* carry-on for five flights) that opens up like a suitcase for easier packing. Since buying, I’ve taken it on two long weekend trips with no complaints. In fact, for both of those trips I packed MORE than I needed. 

Inside, you’ll find a mesh zippered pocket and a plastic pocket perfect for your toiletries. I can fit enough wet toilet toiletries in the second pocket as I’d be allowed to carry-on for a plane. In the mesh pocket I put other necessities like cotton swabs, medicine, eye glasses, etc. The main compartment is deceptively deep so you can easily roll clothes and Lego-fit them in together without using packing cubes. In fact, I fit all of the stuff in the second picture in that section (a romper, PJs, a bikini, sunscreen, five pairs of undies, a pair of jean shorts, nap dress, three pairs of socks, two pairs of sandals, two T-shirts, a slip skirt, sleep mask, curling iron, mini flat iron, makeup bag, and tote bag). It has a generously sized pocket on the front of the backpack with easy access for sunglasses, snacks, writing pens…all sorts of those little extras you need to access quickly. To top it all off, the backpack straps and top handle are STURDY. I felt totally secure toting it around and slinging it into overhead storage compartments on the trains. I love the look and construction of it with faux leather and sturdy black canvas, and the trolley passthrough to easily fit on my roller suitcase I’m about to drag through a bunch of airports. I started solo traveling just after college when I put over 10,000 miles on a rental car driving around South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia to update a Lonely Planet guidebook. The start of my first trip was intimidating. I worried about getting tired of talking to myself and feeling awkward about dining alone.
