After months of editor testing, standouts like the L’Oreal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Spray, House of Lashes Iconic False Eyelashes, and Elemis Superfood Facial Oil all earned top spots. Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus

Allure commerce editor Sarah Han using the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus

Sarah Han

Revlon

One-Step Volumizer Plus

Fans of the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus—who include our editors and thousands of people on TikTok—know it’s the well-priced, not-so-well-kept secret to bouncy blowouts at home. The Plus version’s smaller barrel and nylon bristles make it easier to glide through each section of hair, and some Best of Beauty testers said it’s so light, they can style their whole head with just one hand.

Allure social media manager Bianca Richards applying the L’Oreal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Spray Mist

Bianca Richards

All you need is a few spritzes of L’Oreal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Spray Mist over your makeup, for 36 hours(!) of budge-free coverage that feels like nothing on the skin.

Elemis Superfood Facial Oil

Christa Joanna Lee

Elemis

Superfood Facial Oil

Elemis’ Superfood Facial Oil is packed with almost too many skin-saving oils to count. Sweet almond, cucumber, rice bran, broccoli, and rose hip—they work together to give your skin the radiant glow of someone who gets their daily servings of veggies.

Weleda Skin Food Hydrating Facial Mist

Weleda

Skin Food Hydrating Facial Mist

Allure managing editor Alessandra Foresto applying Weleda’s Skin Food Hydrating Facial Mist

Formulated with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and the same botanical blend (calendula, chamomile, rosemary, pansy, and sunflower seed oil) as Weleda’s iconic Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream, this milky mist refreshes thirsty skin during dry winter days and long afternoons spent in stale office air.

Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System

Allure contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai using the Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System

Shark Beauty

FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System

Five removable attachments mean the Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System is like having an entire hairstylist’s tool kit at home—that you don’t need a hairstylist’s skill set to use.

Flamingo Wax Strips

Allure shopping director Shanna Shipin applying and removing the Flamingo Wax Strips

Shanna Shipin

At-home waxing doesn’t have to be an act of bravery. Flamingo’s Wax Strips make the process simple, with super sticky, pre-waxed strips that lift hair from the root. The process feels more like a quick peel than a painful tug, leaving skin smooth in just minutes.

Wella Professionals Ultimate Smooth Miracle Oil Serum

Allure commerce writer Lily Wohlner applying the Wella Professionals Ultimate Smooth Miracle Oil Serum

Lily Wohlner

Wella Professionals

Ultimate Smooth Miracle Oil Serum

Both our fine- and thick-haired testers were wowed by the glossy finish of Wella Professionals’ Ultimate Smooth Miracle Oil Serum. But the real miracle was how effortlessly the ultra-lightweight formula tamed frizz in just a few swipes.

Belif Aqua Bomb Eye Gel

Allure senior director of audience development Lexi Herrick applying the Belif Aqua Bomb Eye Gel

Lexi Herrick

You may already know (and love) Belif’s The True Cream Aqua Bomb, so think of this gel as its eye-centric little sister. Caffeine, niacinamide, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid lock in hydration and offset dark circles for a well-rested look.

Ma:nyo Pure Cleansing Oil

Lily Wohlner

Manyo Factory

A bona fide Allure K-beauty favorite, Ma:nyo’s Cleansing Oil is a lightweight (yet deep-cleaning) face wash that dissolves blackheads, whiteheads, makeup, and grime in minutes.

EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Face Sunscreen

EltaMD

UV Skin Recovery Face Sunscreen

Allure senior editor Jesa Marie Calaor applying the EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Face Sunscreen

Jesa Marie Calaor

A 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner, EltaMD’s UV Skin Recovery SPF 50 Sunscreen is like the Swiss Army knife of sunscreens—sensitive-skin-friendly, non-greasy, and redness-neutralizing, thanks to a green tint that works some color-theory magic.

Glamnetic Press-On Nails

Allure creative development manager Lauren Alberti applying Glamnetic Press-On Nails

To complement your Glamnetic falsies, grab a box of the brand’s press-on nails. They feel as thick as a traditional acrylic nail, so even if you’re rough on them, they’ll stay adhered. Each pack comes with 24 nails, a cuticle stick, a tube of glue, a nail file, and an alcohol prep pad.

DAE Hair Desert Detox Clarifying Shampoo in branded component on a light gray background with best of beauty 2025 seal in the top right corner

Dae

Hair Desert Detox Clarifying Shampoo

When your strands feel desert-dry, Dae’s Desert Detox Clarifying Shampoo—yet another 2025 Best of Beauty Award winner—is the hydration they need (and deserve). A blend of powerful yet balanced surfactants works hard to break down product buildup, oil, and hard-water residue. At the same time, prickly pear and cactus extracts replenish hydration, while moringa leaf oil locks in moisture and prevents breakage.

Caudalie

Vinopure Natural Salicylic Acid Pore Minimizing Serum

Say goodbye to stubborn dark spots. Former Allure shopping market editor Angela Trakoshis credits the Caudalie Vinopure Pore Minimizing Serum with fading scarring and hyperpigmentation after consistent use. Powered by salicylic acid and antioxidant-rich grapeseed extract from the brand’s French vineyards, it helps skin look clearer, smoother, and more even.

Differin

Acne Treatment Gel

A retinoid once only available by prescription, Differin’s Adapalene Gel 0.1% remains a dermatologist- and Allure editor-favorite for clearing up breakouts—and seven Best of Beauty wins proves it. It regulates skin cell turnover and, when applied all over the face, is unrivaled in its ability to clear pores and reduce inflammation over time.

House of Lashes

House of Lashes Iconic False Eyelashes

Comfort and drama rarely go together in the lash world, but House of Lashes’ Iconic collection changes that. Available in three strip styles (Iconic, Iconic Lite, and Iconic Mini), each lash has a flexible, weightless band and criss-crossed fibers for some extra length and volume.

Lancôme

Lash Idôle Flutter Extension Lash-Lengthening Mascara

According to Allure’s executive beauty director Jenny Bailly, this new formula from Lancôme gives her the long, fluttery lashes of her dreams. And, it won’t budge until you pull out your go-to makeup remover.

Kate Somerville

ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment

Many products promise a “facial in a bottle,” but Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment actually delivers with help from a resurfacing blend of papaya, pineapple, and pumpkin enzymes.

Dr. Althea

Pure Grinding Cleansing Balm

Forget scooping with your fingers—Dr. Althea’s Pure Grinding Cleansing Balm features a clever twist dispenser that delivers the right amount of product every time. Twist out more for heavy makeup days, or less for just sunscreen.

Beautyblender Original in branded component on a light gray background with best of beauty 2025 seal in the top right corner

The Beautyblender Original Makeup Sponge is the iconic egg-shaped tool that’s inspired countless dupes (but has never been outdone). It’s latex-free and has a versatile shape that makes blending cream products easy, delivering smooth, natural-looking coverage every time.

Amazon Prime Day Beauty Deals: Skin-Care

Summer did a number on our skin (hello, sun and sweat), which makes fall the ideal time to refresh the top shelf of your medicine cabinet. A few of our favorites: Dr. Althea’s cult-favorite hydrating face mask, La Roche-Posay’s gentle cleanser for dry-skin season, and St. Tropez’s Self Tan Express Mousse, which develops into an island-worthy tan in just three hours.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5

La Roche-Posay

Cicaplast Balm B5

Han applying La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5

Sarah Han

Are we a broken record when it comes to touting La Roche-Posay as one of our favorite brands for sensitive skin? Maybe, but we don’t mind. Cicaplast Balm B5 is just that good. Not nearly as greasy as a true balm, but richer than your typical face cream, this drugstore darling instantly soothes dry, chapped skin with the help of emollient shea butter, moisturizing vitamin B5, and calming madecassoside (a derivative of our fave, Centella asiastica, or cica for short).

Belif Aqua Bomb

Herrick applying the Belif Aqua Bomb

Lexi Herrick

A staple in many Allure editors’ cabinets, this Korean moisturizer cools skin on contact and keeps inflammation at bay with tiger grass and oat kernel extract. You’ll also notice plumper, bouncier skin, thanks to glycerin and squalane.

Not sure where to start with Korean cleansers? Try the SoonJung pH 6.5 Whip Facial Cleanser. This gentle, cloud-like foam works for all skin types—especially sensitive skin—thanks to its low pH and soothing ingredients like cica-derived madecassoside and panthenol. It cleans without stripping, leaving skin soft and calm.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser

The La Roche-Posay praise train continues. It’s hard not to when the French pharmacy brand has earned multiple Seals of Acceptance from the National Eczema Association and Allure Best of Beauty Awards. On sale right now: the Foaming Facial Cleanser. It features a hard-working team of ceramides, niacinamide, glycerin, and prebiotic thermal water that gently lifts makeup and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.

Is your skin sending out an SOS? Reach for Illiyoon’s Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream, which pairs plant-derived ceramides with fatty acids and cholesterol—the lipids in your skin barrier—in a formula with a low pH, matching the skin’s acidic nature. It’s so gentle, the brand says you can use it on babies.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

Trakoshis applying the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

Angela Trakoshis

Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask is an all-time favorite among Allure editors, thanks to its thick, nourishing formula that combines shea butter, murumuru butter, and coconut oil. “There’s a reason it’s a top-seller on Amazon. It moisturizes lips for hours on end—no reapplication needed. I apply the smallest amount of this stuff on my dry lips at night and am guaranteed to wake up with soft, hydrated lips in the morning,” says former shopping market editor Angela Trakoshis.

Han applying the Koolsol by Knours Ultra-Light Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Sarah Han

Koolsol by Knours Ultra-Light Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 may be a mineral sunscreen, but it comes surprisingly close to mimicking the thin feel of a chemical formula. “It applies so elegantly and invisibly, like a lightweight moisturizer—hi, cica, snow mushroom, aloe, and niacinamide—and leaves my skin looking dewy, but not overly so,” says Han.

Innisfee Super Volcanic Clay Mask

Pai applying the Innisfee Super Volcanic Clay Mask

Deanna Pai

Innisfree

Super Volcanic Clay Mask

If you love the satisfaction of vacuuming out your pores, you’ll be obsessed with the Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask. “What makes it great isn’t just the combo of bentonite and kaolin clays, but the addition of volcanic ash and lactic acid for dual exfoliation,” says Allure contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai. “I liked that I got a little scrubbing action as I was rinsing it off—and my skin looked way more even and radiant after just one use.”

Bioderma

Sensibio H20

“Fun fact: Bioderma was the second-most popular cleanser in Olive Young, South Korea’s version of Sephora or Ulta, in 2024, beating out tons of Korean brands like Anua,” says Han, who was pretty surprised to see its popularity in person during a recent vacation to Seoul. But she gets why: “It’s such a dependable pick—it removes all my makeup, but more importantly, it doesn’t sting my eyes and doesn’t leave a greasy film or feeling on my face.”

Nécessaire

The Body Wash Fragrance-Free

Inside Nécessaire’s The Body Wash is a skin-softening, niacinamide-based formula that’s loaded with vitamins C and E. A previous Best of Beauty Award winner that lives in many of our editors’ showers, its gel-oil formula offers a nice dose of hydration without the irritation that can often come alongside scented products.

Malin + Goetz

Essential Bergamot Purifying, Hydrating Hand + Body Wash

Looking for a luxe moment in your shower routine? Snag Malin + Goetz’s Hand + Body Wash. It not only makes your entire bathroom smell like eucalyptus, but the scent also lingers on your skin for little bursts of calm throughout the day.

Versed

We’re looking out for you when we say, “please step away from the single-use cleansing wipes.” Our advice? Use a small scoop of Versed’s Day Dissolve Cleansing Balm to melt away even your toughest makeup without leaving your complexion looking raw and irritated.

Origins

GinZing Refreshing Scrub Cleanser

There’s nothing like a burst of citrus to wake up the senses, which is why Allure commerce editor Sarah Han starts her mornings with Origins Refreshing Scrub Cleanser. “I’m not a huge scrub person, so I appreciate how fine the jojoba beads in Origins’s GinZing cleanser—they lather slightly with water and don’t rub my skin raw,” she says.

Vacation

Crystal SPF 50 Face Gel

Completely invisible on the skin, this SPF 50 Face Gel does the most—without a white cast. It wears beautifully on its own or under makeup, blending seamlessly into all skin tones.

Incredibly creamy, they make tangled hair supple and smooth again, hydrating like nobody’s business with shea butter-packed formulas that—big bonus—are safe for color-treated hair.

Living Proof

Want Healthier Hair? Massive 2025 Study Reveals Exactly What To Eat (And Avoid) For Thicker, Stronger Hair

Ladies, let’s talk about the moment that broke me: standing in the shower watching clumps of hair circle the drain while my postpartum body was already betraying me in every other way. I’d always had thick hair — the kind people complimented — and suddenly it was thin, brittle, and falling out in handfuls.

I tried everything: $80 shampoos, rice water rinses, rosemary oil (yes, it works, but not miracles). Then I read the blockbuster September 2025 systematic review published in Nutrition and Health that analyzed 17 studies and over 61,000 participants (97% women, because we suffer the most with this). The findings were crystal clear: what you eat and drink directly impacts hair density, thickness, growth rate, shine, and hair loss.

1,566,500+ Long Flowing Hair Stock Photos, Pictures & Royalty-Free …

The biggest bombshells? → Higher intake of vegetables (especially cruciferous), soy foods, protein, vitamin D, and iron = significantly better hair health → Higher intake of alcohol, sugary beverages, and processed foods = dramatically increased hair loss

This wasn’t some tiny study. This was the most comprehensive review ever done on diet and hair outcomes. And it confirmed what functional medicine doctors have been saying for years: your plate is the most powerful hair growth tool you own.

Here’s exactly what to eat (and what to quit) starting today, based on the latest 2025 science.

The Game-Changing 2025 Study Everyone’s Talking About

Published September 2025 in Nutrition and Health, this systematic review looked at dietary patterns across thousands of women experiencing everything from general thinning to severe alopecia.

Key findings:

  • Soy foods (tofu, edamame) and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts) were strongly linked to reduced hair loss and increased density
  • Protein-rich diets improved hair thickness and growth rate
  • Vitamin D and iron supplementation showed clear benefits (especially for deficient women)
  • Alcohol, sugar-sweetened beverages, and ultra-processed foods were independently associated with worse hair outcomes — even after controlling for age, hormones, and stress

Source: mindbodygreen breakdown of the study | Original research abstract

Another 2025 study from Sage Journals confirmed: limiting alcohol and soft drinks while boosting vitamin D and iron is one of the most effective dietary interventions for hair health.

The 10 Best Foods Proven To Grow Thicker, Stronger Hair (Load Your Plate With These)

1. Fatty Fish (Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines) — The Omega-3 Powerhouse

Omega-3s reduce inflammation in the scalp and support hair follicle health. The 2025 review showed women with higher omega-3 intake had significantly less hair shedding.

Eat 2–3 servings weekly. Bonus: also protects your brain (remember the coffee + Alzheimer’s study? Pair wild salmon with black coffee for the ultimate glow-up).

2. Eggs — The Perfect Protein + Biotin Combo

Eggs are one of the best sources of biotin (vitamin B7), and biotin deficiency is directly linked to hair loss. Multiple studies show eggs improve hair growth and strength within 90 days.

I eat 2–3 pastured eggs daily now. My hairdresser asked what I was doing differently last month.

3. Spinach & Dark Leafy Greens — Iron + Folate + Vitamin C

Iron deficiency is the #1 cause of hair loss in women worldwide. Spinach delivers plant-based iron plus vitamin C for absorption and folate for cell turnover.

Pro move: sauté with garlic and lemon, add to eggs.

4. Berries (Especially Blueberries & Strawberries) — Antioxidant Superstars

Free radicals damage hair follicles. Berries are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants that protect follicles and boost collagen production.

One cup daily. Frozen works perfectly in smoothies.

5. Nuts & Seeds (Almonds, Walnuts, Chia, Pumpkin Seeds) — Zinc + Vitamin E + Healthy Fats

Zinc deficiency causes hair shedding (and weak nails — see my 3-step nail routine). Pumpkin seed oil showed remarkable results in men with pattern baldness (2025 studies).

Handful daily. I keep pumpkin seeds in my bag.

17 Foods for Hair Growth that Work Like Magic – Rumbie

6. Sweet Potatoes & Carrots — Beta-Carotene for Sebum Production

Your scalp needs natural oils to stay healthy. Vitamin A from beta-carotene regulates sebum production without the toxicity risk of supplements.

7. Avocado — Healthy Fats + Vitamin E

Vitamin E improves scalp circulation and protects against oxidative stress. One study showed 8mg daily increased hair growth by 34.5% in 6 months.

8. Soy Foods (Tofu, Tempeh, Edamame) — The Surprise MVP

The 2025 review found soy consumption was one of the strongest protective factors against hair loss — likely due to isoflavones that modulate hormones gently.

9. Greek Yogurt or Kefir — Probiotics + Protein

Gut health = hair health. Probiotics improve nutrient absorption, and yogurt delivers protein + B vitamins.

10. Beef Liver or Lentils — The Ultimate Nutrient Bomb (If You’re Deficient)

Liver is nature’s multivitamin: insane amounts of iron, B12, vitamin A, copper. If you’re vegetarian, lentils + vitamin C.

The Foods & Drinks Scientifically Proven To Wreck Your Hair (Cut These Now)

The same 2025 research was brutal about what destroys hair:

→ Sugar-sweetened beverages (soda, energy drinks, sweetened coffee/tea) — strongly associated with increased hair loss → Alcohol — the more you drink, the worse your hair outcomes → Ultra-processed foods (chips, fast food, packaged snacks) — inflammatory and nutrient-void

Other research confirms:

  • High-glycemic foods (white bread, pastries) spike insulin and androgens → more shedding
  • Artificial sweeteners — disrupt gut microbiome needed for nutrient absorption
  • Excessive vitamin A or selenium from supplements (food sources are safe)

I cut alcohol completely in October 2025. My hair stopped falling out within 6 weeks.

8 Foods that Cause Hair Loss – Traya Nutritionist Reveals

My Exact Hair-Growth Diet (What I Eat Daily in December 2025)

Breakfast: 3 eggs + spinach + ½ avocado + berries Lunch: Salmon bowl with sweet potato, broccoli, pumpkin seeds Snack: Greek yogurt with walnuts + blueberries Dinner: Tofu stir-fry with cruciferous veggies or grass-fed beef/lentils

Supplements only if bloodwork shows deficiency (get tested!):

  • Vitamin D (most women are deficient)
  • Iron (if ferritin <70)
  • Marine collagen peptides in coffee

I Tried Cécred’s New Protection Collection—Here Are My Thoughts http://livelaughlovedo.com/i-tried-cecreds-new-protection-collection-here-are-my-thoughts/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/i-tried-cecreds-new-protection-collection-here-are-my-thoughts/#respond Fri, 22 Aug 2025 23:17:49 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/08/23/i-tried-cecreds-new-protection-collection-here-are-my-thoughts/ [ad_1]

If there’s one thing we know to be true, it’s that Beyoncé is always working on something new. Naturally, this sentiment also applies to her hair care company, Cécred. Since launching last February, the brand has steadily expanded from its initial lineup of seven products, releasing viral favorites like the Restoring Hair & Edge Drops along the way.

Now, Cécred is gearing up to drop its newest assortment, the Protection Collection, on August 25. Ahead, learn more about the products in the line and my first-hand experience with each one.

The Products

Beyoncé has worn every protective style under the sun—from wigs to braids—and is obviously no stranger to hair coloring either, having been blonde for decades. Her experiences directly shaped this collection, allowing the brand to bring a fresh perspective to the protection category.

“We knew that consumers in protective styles and extensions often rely on home-mixed hair remedies, oftentimes without validated but also high-performance solutions,” director of education Dr. Kari Williams tells Byrdie. “These approaches might offer a temporary fix, but over time, they can weaken the scalp and hair health, causing damage, breakage, and shedding. We wanted to change that narrative with the new Protection Collection. Our goal was to create products that prioritize performance and efficacy, while staying true to trusted and safe ingredients, so consumers no longer have to choose between safety and results.”

Cécred

The five-piece collection includes everything you need to approach the prep, maintenance, and takedown process of protective styles. There’s the Detoxifying Shampoo, Scalp Refreshing Spray, Oil Ritual, Detangling Spray, and Hair & Scalp Balm.

Of course, each product is uniquely formulated; however, there’s a proprietary “PhytoFerment” (a blend of scalp-nourishing ingredients) found across the entire collection. “Merging wisdom and science is the backbone of our research and development strategy, so with this collection, we drew from Herbalism, but through a scientific lens by looking at the biochemical properties of plant remedies,” senior vice president of product development Robyn Watkins says. “We took that wisdom to the lab and created our latest innovation, PhytoFerment. We developed this balanced bioferment with the overall intention to help soothe, nourish, and balance the scalp while preventing dryness, style-related itchiness, and tension. It is derived from fermented purple willow bark, tea tree, rosemary, goldenrod, and so much more.”

As with the Foundation Collection, this new assortment features a signature fragrance as well. Dubbed “nocturne spice,” the scent has addictive notes of pink pepper, vanilla, cardamom spice, tonka bean, and oud.

My Review

Ahead of the launch of the Protection Collection, I was able to enjoy a salon appointment with Dr. Williams. Having spent the summer in protective styles and doing a bit more heat styling than usual, my hair and scalp have been in need of some extra love and care. That said, Dr. Williams gave me the full Cécred experience—using each of the five products on my hair.

She started with the Detangling Spray—which contains slippery elm, ceramides, honey, and aloe vera leaf juice—and it instantly added more slip and softness to my hair. Then, we moved on to the Detoxifying Shampoo, a blue-violet formula that enhances the vibrancy of your hair while also removing all traces of buildup. With menthol being a hero ingredient, this shampoo creates a deep cooling sensation on the scalp (which feels really nice). After two rounds of shampooing, my hair felt squeaky clean, but not in a stripped way—instead, my curls felt like they were in their purest, most balanced state.

After cleansing, Dr. Williams applied the Oil Ritual. Hot oil treatments are a Black haircare staple, so I was excited to see Cécred’s take—and it didn’t disappoint. Let’s get into the ingredients first: the Oil Ritual is infused with 21 oils (like manuka), honey, peppermint, and menthol for that cooling effect. You can use it at room temperature or heat it to enhance its benefits—we opted for the latter to combat the dryness I was experiencing, and I sat under a hooded dryer for 15 minutes. Once the oil was thoroughly rinsed out, my hair was noticeably softer, shinier, and smoother.

Olivia Hancock

Before it was time to move on to styling, Dr. Williams misted my scalp with the Scalp Refreshing Spray for extra measure. I was especially intrigued by this particular product for a few reasons—first and foremost, the packaging. Unlike typical spray bottles, this one features a custom nozzle that makes it easy to apply the product to your scalp, whether you’re wearing a weave or braids. The Scalp Refreshing Spray is packed with honey, ceramide, peppermint, and menthol, so it also offers a rejuvenating and soothing sensorial experience. In between wash days, I definitely see myself reaching for this often to dissolve buildup and revive my scalp quickly.

To finish, Dr. Williams used the Moisture-Sealing Lotion from the brand’s Foundation Collection to define and moisturize my curls. She finished with the new Hair & Scalp Balm, one of the most versatile products in this new collection. Inspired by back-in-the-day hair greases, the brand claims 10 different usage cases—from moisturizing your dry scalp to smoothing frizz to blending leave-out. We used this to tame flyaways around my hairline and further boost shine. I’m impressed by how lightweight and non-greasy this formula is, considering it’s a balm-to-oil salve.

Post-salon visit, I’ve received numerous compliments on how healthy my hair looks, and I wholeheartedly agree. As I prepare for my next protective style, I feel confident that my hair is in its best possible shape, and I’m excited to continue to incorporate these five products into my maintenance routine. All in all, Cécred, you’ve outdone yourself once again.

What I Wish I Knew Before Getting A Bob http://livelaughlovedo.com/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-getting-a-bob/ http://livelaughlovedo.com/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-getting-a-bob/#respond Sat, 26 Jul 2025 12:44:37 +0000 http://livelaughlovedo.com/2025/07/26/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-getting-a-bob/ [ad_1]

Your Styling Techniques Are Definitely Going to Change

Every single person with a bob has their techniques for styling. The trick is to conduct your own experiments and find which one works well for you.

For Gigi Hadid’s structured cut with natural, effortless texture, Chris McMillan taught her (and us, thanks to his videos) a simple styling trick: roughly tie damp hair back into a loose bun at the nape of the neck and let it air dry for a flippy bob. McMillan is also responsible for the modern resurgence of the bob, thanks to Leslie Bibb’s #clb (aka c**ty little bob) in The White Lotus. That polished look likely is accomplished with a plethora of styling tools, from blow dryers and brushes to flat irons and curling wands.

Zero in on the look you’re seeking first: sleek, tousled, polished, etc., and then brainstorm how to get there with styling. If you’re really puzzled, as I was right after my first cut, book a styling appointment with a stylist you admire and state you’d like to be taught how to style your hair.

For me, I do not want to look too polished. I’d rather lean toward Kurt Cobain’s grunge bob than Parent Trap’s Meredith Blake’s polished, Grace Kelly-esque bob. I’m a month into the bob, and I’m still figuring out my technique, but right now, freshly washed hair gets thrown into a hair towel for 30 minutes, and then any excess moisture is squeezed out of my strands. Do not comb. Combing with a Wet Brush seemed to make the hair lose its wild spirit. Instead, I use a wide-tooth comb in the shower while rinsing out my conditioner. Rake a styling cream through the damp ends, part it, scrunch waves back into place, and then don’t touch it. Let it air dry and still do not touch it—seriously. My slightly wavy locks can be coaxed into a slightly attractive curl if—and only if—I completely ignore it and don’t touch it after applying a styling cream.

I’ve heard of some people putting on a baseball cap at this point, which helps to flatten down the sides (preventing it from looking too wig-like, a main complaint) and leave it looking more carefree. I also have had success tucking the sides behind my ears (or locking it into place with clips behind my ears for more comfort) for hair that has a bit of a wave in the front. I’ve had mild success also taking hair clips (I like how comfortable the KS&CO Leaf Hair Clips are, I’ve even slept in them and didn’t feel a thing.) and putting them into what I hope is an s-wave, or as much as a novice like me can muster. Although my hair can look far too ‘done’ with this technique, it can sometimes look more pulled together and polished–but not too much—for days when I need to look more presentable.

I also wash every two days, and the laissez-faire attitude I’m aiming for seems to come out more on the second day after it’s been slept on. When I had long strands, I used to try all manners of techniques to keep a heatless curl for day two, but since I’m going for more polished grunge than polished curls, the texture is usually more advantageous on day two, even without any texturizing products.

Heat styling tools, particularly a blow dryer have made it look too perfect, almost wig-like and teetering very closely into Lord Farquaad territory. But this is my next bob-related thing to conquer, especially after Lanrick’s tips

Did you know that most avocados sold in the U.S. are grown in the southern part of California? That certainly explains the Golden State’s obsession with avocado-topped anything and everything. Avocados are chock full of antioxidants, good fats, and fiber that prevent cancer, maintain heart health, even lower the risk of depression—so eat up!

While these fatty fruits are a delicious source of nutrients when consumed, avocado-derived ingredients can be found in numerous topical formulas to nourish the body from head to toe. Avocado oil, extract, and butter are dry skin and hair saviors, known for deeply hydrating, softening, and strengthening with every use. Check out this avocado infused lineup of restorative products to keep in your beauty kit all year long.

R+Co BLEU Super Style Crème, $12

Avocado oil penetrates hair to deliver added moisture, smoothness, and shine. The Super Style Crème does exactly that with an avocado-rich formula and added vitamin E for silky, strong styles. Plus, the creme blankets hair in lightweight hydration that helps seal split ends and prevent frizz.

Indie Lee Botanical Boosting Oil, $48

Shark

SpeedStyle Pro Flex Hair Dryer System

If you have a sensitive scalp like me, the Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex is worth the investment. Shark’s Scalp Shield feature monitors heat 1,000 times a second to ensure it never exceeds 230 degrees Fahrenheit. It comes with four versatile attachments à la Dyson, and it’s surprisingly light (1.57 pounds). Plus, it folds up for easy travel or storage. I’ve tested the Dyson Airwrap, and this gets you there for way less cash.

Revlon

One-Step Volumizer Plus

We’ve tested a lot of blow-dry brushes, but the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus (8/10, WIRED Recommends) wins on value. It dries and styles at once, with a slimmer, 2-inch oval barrel that’s detachable and easier to handle than the original. The ceramic titanium tourmaline coating cuts down on heat damage, and four settings (plus a cool shot) give you all the control you need. At $46 (down from $70), it’s a steal.

A Water Flosser

Waterpik

Cordless Advanced 2.0 Water Flosser

I’m a devout flosser, and while this Waterpik isn’t a replacement for string floss, it’s a killer addition to my dental care routine. The rotating nozzle and three pressure settings blast gunk from places threads can’t reach. One fill gives you 45 seconds of powerful spray, which is all I need. It’s compact, waterproof, and cordless. It charges fast in just four hours and comes with a travel bag and tip case. Ideal for tight counters and travel. My gums have never been happier.

A Sonic Toothbrush

Philips

Sonicare 4100 Electric Toothbrush

I’ve tested a lot of sonic electric toothbrushes, but I keep circling back to the Philips Sonicare 4100. It’s gentler on gums than oscillating brushes, dead simple to use, and packed with features that matter. You get a pressure sensor, a two-minute timer, two intensity modes, and a two-week battery life. It even reminds you when it’s time to change the brush head. At $40 for Prime Day (down from $50), it’s the one I’d grab.

A Beard Trimmer

Image may contain: Blade, Razor, and Weapon

Philips

Norelco Multigroom 7000 Titanium Beard Trimmer

This is one of the most versatile beard trimmers thanks to the dozen or so attachments in the box. They’re easy to swap, but you can also use the trimmer without the guard for the closest shave, and it doesn’t nick or pull. You can use it plugged or unplugged (we rarely had to plug it in), and it’s completely waterproof.

An Affordable Soothing Balm

Image may contain: Face, Head, Person, and Cosmetics

Courtesy of Amazon

I love this lip mask. It’s featured in our guides of the Best TikTok Gifts and Best Lip Balms. A little goes a very long way—I’ve had my current jar for three years—and the formula is thick, but melts down quickly. This luscious treatment is flavored and scented, but not tinted. It’s soothing on dry lips (and even cuticles in a pinch) thanks to ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter. It also doesn’t get much cheaper than this. —Louryn Strampe

Snail Mucin For You Skin

Cosrx

Advanced Snail Mucin 96 Percent Power Repairing Essence Serum

If you’re interested in the benefits of snail mucin, the Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is a must-try. Regularly priced at $17, it’s now available for nearly half off during Prime Day, an opportunity to stock up on this cult-favorite slime.

A Cheaper Dyson Airwrap

Hair styler with handle, 2 curling rods, and a brush

Photograph: Medea Giordano

The T3 Aire 360 (9/10, WIRED Recommends) matches the Dyson Airwrap in power and aesthetics but at a price that feels way more justified. It comes with fewer ceramic attachments than its competitors, but with two curling barrels, a concentrator, and an oval brush, it’s more than enough for a salon-worthy blowout. The rose-pink finish is adorable, and it stashes easily in a drawer. WIRED reviewer Nena Farrell’s one complaint about the tool was the cost, but with this deal? No notes.

The Best Curling Iron For Long Hair

Bio Ionic

Long Barrel Curling Iron

We’ve dubbed the Bio Ionic Long Barrel Styler the best curling iron for (wait for it) long hair. The 8-inch ceramic barrel wraps large sections quickly and tames frizz while you style. It heats up to 430 degrees Fahrenheit, and the sculpted cool-touch grip makes styling feel ergonomic. Plus, it’s dual voltage, so you can pack it for international travels.

Kassidy Silva using the Tek Multipurpose Large Oval Brush With Short Pins

Kassidy Silva

Why we love it: Tek’s Multipurpose Large Oval Brush is gentle yet effective, providing a subtle, non-irritating scalp massage you’ll genuinely enjoy. Its short, hornbeam wood pins won’t trigger frizz or static (similar to metal options) and even help absorb excess sebum and natural oils from your strands. Due to the shorter length of the pins, it’s ideal for use on dry hair. Comfortable to grip and perfect for long, thick hair, it’s a timeless addition to your haircare lineup.

“Meet my ultimate weapon against my long, dense hair. With hair down to my waist, it can get a bit unruly during the day, and just a few swipes of the Tek Multipurpose Brush whips it back into shape. I start by brushing gently on the ends, working to the middle of my hair on one side at a time. Once I’m tangle-free, I do two quick, gentle brushes at the top of my head, mindful not to remove the volume. I toss it into my bag for the day and am on the go. At night, I repeat the same routine but do a mini scalp massage to help with my postpartum loss since the pins are so gentle on my hair.” —Kassidy Silva, social media director

Best on Scalps: Mane Ready or Knot Detangling Paddle Hair Brush

Mane

Ready or Knot Detangling Paddle Hair Brush

Allure contributing commerce writer Annie Blackman brushing her hair with the Mane Ready or Knot Brush

Annie Blackman

Why we love it: The spacious surface area of Mane’s Ready or Knot Brush is immediately impressive. The paddle brush’s birch wood design features metal bristles that deliver a blissful scalp massage every time you detangle. Especially talented at breaking up stubborn knots in towel-dried hair, this brush expertly smooths strands with minimal static. It’s exactly the brush we wish we had growing up—but better late than never.

“No joke, this is the only brush that detangles my hair. Before I was using the Ready or Knot brush, it took maybe a full six minutes to brush my very long hair post-shower, and this thing cut that time more than in half. The metal bristles are key and I appreciate the surface area. Part of my struggle is that my individual strands aren’t super thick, but I have loads of fine hair, which makes me extra tangle and breakage prone, so this brush has been a lifesaver. It looks really pretty on my dresser, too. I’ve had the brush for around a year now and it’s still going strong, but the paint on the wooden body has started to wear a bit. Doesn’t bother me one bit, though.”

Best Splurge: La Bonne Brosse N.03 The Gentle Scalp Care Hair Brush

La Bonne Brosse

N.03 The Gentle Scalp Care Hair Brush

Allure shopping director Shanna Shipin brushing her hair with the La Bonne Brosse N.03 The Gentle Scalp Care Hair Brush

Shanna Shipin

Why we love it: Part of the whole “quiet luxury” thing is investing in beautifully elevated versions of everyday items. La Bonne Brosse’s No.3 The Gentle Scalp Care Hair Brush fits that perfectly. Its boar bristles and nylon pins are infused with keratin for an extra reparative boost with every stroke, gently smoothing without irritation. (For more serious detangling, opt for the Universal version, which also happens to be a Best of Beauty winner.) Round-tipped bristles make it ideal for sensitive scalps—no overstimulation here—and it comes in 10 stunning shades, ensuring you’ll find the perfect match for your vanity aesthetic.

“When you have lot of hair (hi, hello) you need a do-it-all brush, and for me, that’s the N.03 from La Bonne Brosse. The combination of nylon bristles (which have capped ends that make it nice and gentle on your scalp) and boar bristles makes it so this brush can detangle, smooth, and style.  My hair is curly and I often heat style it, so I’m constantly needing to detangle and brush out blowouts or curls, and it does a great job at sealing up the ends and making everything look overall more polished. I also use it to massage my scalp, and distribute oils through my dry, damaged ends. It’s definitely pricey, but it can replace so many in your routine.” —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

  • Brush material: cellulose acetate body, nylon and boar hair bristles
  • Who it’s for: people who want a softer brushing experience

Best Detangling: FHI Heat Unbrush Detangling Hair Brush

Its one hundred and five hardworking bristles glide effortlessly through even the toughest tangles, while the lightweight body ensures easy handling as you move from section to section. Despite being plastic, the bristles boast an anti-static coating, an excellent feature for wet hair and dry hair alike. Pro tip: start detangling from your ends and gradually work your way up to the roots for best results.

“I just got K-tip extensions and the Unbrush has been a total lifesaver with keeping them looking perfect. It glides through my hair without tugging or catching on the bonds, which is basically a miracle. No knots, just smooth, tangle-free hair.” —Angela Trakoshis, shopping market editor

Best for Styling: Wet Brush Easy Blowout Detangling Hair Brush

Wet Brush

Easy Blowout Detangling Hair Brush

Lexi Herrick using the Wet Brush Easy Blowout Detangling Hair Brush

Lexi Herrick

Why we love it: Absolutely slaying the bang-to-buck ratio every time, the Wet Brush is a drugstore staple in every sense. While each iteration of this classic delivers, the Easy Blowout Detangling Hair Brush truly shines on days when you use hot tools. Start by detangling damp strands before your blowout, then keep it handy as you fire up your hair dryer. Its heat-resistant bristles and ceramic-plated base retain heat, enhancing smoothness and straightening without risking damage to your strands while blow-drying.

Tester feedback from senior director of audience development Lexi Herrick

“This brush is a dream for thick hair. My hair instantly mattes and knots when it gets wet. My hair texture is straight and fine, but it’s very dense, so the combination of that results in a tangly tornado. This brush brilliantly brushes out knots while adding volume. It’s excellent for continous detangling as I am blow drying my hair, and truly gives the volumious, blowout look that I am seeking. It also holds up to the wet brush standard of never becoming damaged due to water exposure.” —Lexi Herrick, senior director of audience development

Why we love it: A classic boar bristle hair brush that’s just as luxe as it is effective, try Mason Pearson’s Popular Bristle Nylon Brush. Los Angeles-based hair stylist Devin Toth appreciates the mixed-bristles, which use “nylon and boar bristles, which, together, create maximum tension and control, creating a lot of smoothness and shine.” Celebrity hairstylist Mia Santiago agrees. “I always make sure my Mason Pearson [brush] is in my kit and salon. The bristles are strong enough to detangle the hair, soft enough not to break it, and amazing at evenly distributing the natural oil from your scalp through your hair all at the same time. This makes your hair shinier, healthier, and gorgeous,” she says. Convinced? We are.

Best for Coily Hair: Felicia Leatherwood Detangler Brush

Why we love it: Thick, coily hair meets its match in Felicia Leatherwood’s Detangler Brush. This brush’s flexible bristles are stout and widely spaced to minimize tugging and breaking tight spirals of hair. “This brush moves with the hair instead of fighting it. It’s gentle, effective, and curl-defining, all in one,” says hairstylist Michelle O’Connor. The broad, flat handle makes it easy to grip and guide, which is helpful when brushing wet hair—something that O’Connor recommends. She likes to use it on soaking wet strands, saturated with conditioner, to help with detangling and curl definition.

  • Brush material: wood, nylon

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you define thick hair?

According to Toth, thick hair can be defined as a matter of overall density or of individual strand coarseness. “You could describe the diameter of each individual strand of hair as either fine or coarse, but thick hair comes down to the collective density of your entire head of hair (hair follicles per square inch),” says Toth. As for the signs you have thick hair? Toth points out a few. “You probably have thick hair if it feels heavy, like it’s pulling down your head and neck, especially when in a bun,” he says. “Another example is when you have a clean hair part, you can barely see your scalp.”

What’s the best hairbrush for thick hair?

The brush you use for thick hair largely depends on preference, because “thick hair” isn’t a one-size-fits-all definition, so your hairbrush shouldn’t be either. If you like brushing your hair when it’s wet, look for metal bristles that won’t rust or flexible plastic bristles. If you prefer taking a brush to your strands when they’re totally dry, opt for a non-static wood bristle. Want a style refresh? “If hair is in a bouncy blowout, I would use a boar bristle brush to softly brush the hair to remove tangles and distribute oils from roots to ends,” says Santiago.

You can also look for brushes that feature bristles of different lengths, which can help with detangling, according to Mandee Tauber, a hairstylist and educator for Oribe.

How do you brush super thick hair?

Since thick hair is more prone to tangling, it’s important to brush in a way that limits painful tugging and snagging. The solution lies in where you begin brushing. Toth recommends the following method for people with wavy hair or thick, straight hair: “Brush the ends first, and then once they are detangled, brush from the mid shaft downward through the ends. Once that’s all detangled, brush from the roots of the hair all the way down and through the ends.”

However, the requirements for brushing thick curly hair can be a little different. Maryland-based hairstylist Ardajah Jones explains, “Sometimes, depending on the hair’s health and curl pattern, you might need to start brushing above the tangle and work your way down first, rather than always starting at the ends. The main goal is to use a combination of technique and the right amount of tension to minimize wear and tear on the hair.”

You can expect a bit of trial and error as you figure out what brushing method feels good for you, your strands, and your scalp. Just be gentle and patient.

Meet the experts

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While some can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers’ experience levels. For instance, an innovative new blow-dryer may feature industry-leading technology, but if the only people who find it intuitive to use are professional hairstylists, we have to consider this when determining whether it is worthy of a recommendation.

For our list of the best hairbrushes for thick hair, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors — along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists and seasoned estheticians. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors — in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon — is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
