Inside Model Kelsey Merritt's First Chanel Haute Couture Fashion Show

There’s a special joy that comes with firsts: your first day of school, first car, first designer handbag. Yesterday, model Kelsey Merritt attended her first Chanel Haute Couture show—a magical experience that fashion lovers around the world could only dream of. But Merritt is no stranger to the runway—or firsts. In 2018, she became the first Filipino model to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The following year, she was the first Filipino to appear in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Now, she’s in Paris taking in the world of couture.

While sharing some of her fashion week essentials and go-to Paris spots, Merritt gives L’OFFICIEL an exclusive look at her day at the Chanel Spring/Summer 2024 Haute Couture show.

L’O: This is your first Chanel Haute Couture show. What are you most excited about?

It’s really special to be able to come to Paris and experience a Chanel Haute Couture show and I [couldn’t] wait to see what kind of set they prepared for this show. Everything that Chanel does is thoughtful and intentional, and they always create the most beautiful sets for their shows. One of my favorites is the Fall/Winter 2019 collection where they built a chalet set in a snow mountain, which is also Karl Lagerfeld’s last collection for the brand.

L’O: How does Chanel fit into your personal style?

I keep my style very neutral, so I love the black and white signature of Chanel. I always gravitate towards classic, elegant, and sophisticated looks. I find a lot of Chanel pieces to be that—and timeless.

L’O: Do you have any go-to spots when you’re in Paris? Or something you’re looking to do/see for the first time while you’re there?

Whenever I am in Paris, I always make time to walk around and explore the city, and I like to treat myself with some shopping! I also have a few go-to restaurants like Girafe, which has the most incredible view of the Eiffel Tower, and Lou Lou. Also sitting outside the Louvre and people watching never gets old.

L’O: Who’s the most interesting person you’ve met during a fashion week?

One of the best things about fashion weeks is meeting new people from all over the world who share a similar appreciation and respect for this industry. It’s hard to pinpoint one interesting person as I have met and befriended so many different people just from sitting next to them at shows or dinners during the week.

L’O: What are your fashion week essentials?

First, a power bank. Having a dead phone during fashion week is never good. Next, a steamer and fashion tape. And last, a ring light.

L’O: What’s a fashion trend that you regret trying?

I try not to follow trends and instead, have always tried to stick to classic and timeless designs that I would have in my wardrobe forever. However, I do love learning about new trends and seeing what new looks people are wearing.

L’O: What’s a beauty product in your bag that you can’t live without?

Honestly, my Rouge Coco Gloss lip gloss. I never leave the house without it! Everyone who knows me will tell you that my lips [must] be glossed at all times.

L’O: How was the Chanel show? What were some of your favorite moments/looks?

The show was even more magical than I could have imagined. We were all seated under a giant floating Chanel button! It was everything you would expect from a Chanel Haute Couture show. Some of my favorites were a tulle gown with a cropped sequined jacket, a sequined bustier with mesh pants, and a classic black tweed jacket and skirt suit set.
