Coach Embraces the Empire State of Mind

Timeless silhouettes defined Coach’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection as chunky knits, made-to-last boots, and trusty denim staples were paraded around the runway. The leading inspiration behind the collection is the very city it was presented in, New York City. Creative Director Stuart Vevers was inspired by New York and the stories and muses that belong to this city as he draws from his memories of his former colleague Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her romance with John F. Kennedy Jr.

A key focal point to this collection lies in Vevers’ goal to challenge the traditions of luxury and lean more towards youth counterculture as well as the designer’s sustainability initiatives. This is exhibited through upcycled Coach(Re)Loved bags and the second-hand materials patchworked into the new designs that were shown on the runway this afternoon. “My vision for Fall was to explore the archetypes of codes of luxury, recontextualized through the progressive spirit of New York today,” said Vevers.

Vevers’s memories of New York are characterized by realism and authenticity thus making this collection emblematic of an aesthetic that’s romantic yet raw. As new versions of “Moon River” imagined by The Strokes’ musical director Fabrizio Moretti played throughout The James B. Duke House on the Upper East Side, the show opened with a black top and baby pink skirt combo paired with work boots—an ensemble that merges beauty and innocence with a rustic note. Several black and navy-clad looks throughout the collection perhaps, in part, pay tribute to Bessette-Kennedy’s style which was defined by basics and a pared-down minimalism. Following suit were looks featuring playful sweaters, pastel blazers, and denim jeans.

This collection also debuts the aptly titled New York leather goods collection, featuring the new Empire Carryall as well as the Times Square Tabby. NYC-themed accessories like Statue of Liberty and taxi cab charms play into the kitschy lens of youth that Coach has always excelled at harnessing.
